Hair gel for babies?

I'm just curious if anyone has put hair gel or moose in their baby's hair? Ava has the most beautiful curly hair when it's wet and it looks absolutely adorable. However, when it dries, it's a complete mess. Since we mostly just stay at home I don't worry about it and when we do go out, I either try to comb it straight, put it in a topsy tail, use a headband, or just let it go :FIFblush: . We are taking them to get their 1 year portraits in a week or so, though, and I would love to be able to show off those curls. I know that I would need some kind of gel or something to keep them together and shiny, but I don't know what to use. I don't want to weigh it down and I don't even know if it's safe. If I can't do it, it's no big deal, I just thought it would be cute. Any suggestions?

I used something on the girls hair when they were little. I have pics of them at 10 months with curled Mohawks. You might look in the kids stuff or experiment with lotion. A friend of mine who has a African American mix baby uses the pink j&j lotion on his hair

I wouldn't use hair gel on babies. But It just me. Most hair gels are made in china. Who knows whats in there. I am sure she's cute wo hair gel. Youcan try applying very light Vaseline when her hair is still a bit wet. Then use towel dry it out. It might work. a thought. Gl!

My one twin has the same hair. The back has ringlettes after the bath, but by mid-morning its a mess. I thought about trying a bit of olive oil or lotion to keep it sort of wet. I'm not big on having grease marks all over my brown mico-suade couch so I haven't actually tried it. Maybe try something like that to start with.

My girls have very curly hair that looks quite fluffy when it's clean and brushed. I have used leave in conditioner moose from Aussie and it worked very well!

She is definitely cute w/o hair gel :)! I just thought it would be something neat for her portraits. I definitely would not do it every day.

Thank you for all of the suggestions. I'll play around with stuff and see what works.

I don't think it would be a big deal to use it for pictures one day, it's not like you plan to use it all the time ;) I would go with a mousse though, gel will hold great, but be crunchy feeling and she may not like that. A styling mousse might work better with less "crunch" to it. Experiment at home and see what you can come up with :)

Have you tried any kids detangle spray? I've used J&J, Target brand, and Suave and all of them keep my DDs curls nice. Hers doesn't get frizzy, though...it's pretty fine with ringlets so maybe that's why the leave-in detangle spray is enough. If your DD has really curly hair, it might not hold enough.

I read a book called "Curly Girl" (because I have frizzy curly hair, too!) and the best thing I did for my DD is now I water down her baby shampoo. getting a nice soapy lather with curly hair is actually a bad thing - curls are healthier when you use products without the lathering agents or water it down a lot and wash it smoothly without scruffing it all up. You may already know that, but before I read it I always lathere up the suds on my hair (and hers!) - now that we've started changing the way we shampoo, we both have more controlled curls ;)

My little ones are mixed race, and i use leave on conditioner from It's a Curl made for mixed race kiddos but I'm sure it works for all curly heads. It's made for infants and is all natural. It not only keeps their curls nice, it actually helped their cradle cap too.

I've used a few different sprays for curly hair on my DD before. I say just experiment and see what works. I've never heard of using Vaseline before, but I may try it just a little.

I would ask your hairdresser what she thinks. I am actually going to cut my LOs hair this weekend - she has ringlets in the back, then a bare row, then whispy long hair on top! Impossible!! but I would experiment with mouses for curly hair for sure!

It would be totally fine to use gel or mousse...I think mousse would work best as it wont look as crunchy...good luck!! I bet the pictures will be adorable!!

My twins also have curly hair, but without any hair products, their hair looks like one giant poof. I dont put any products in when they are at home, but when we go out, I try to put at least a leave-in conditioner. I tried Aveeno leave in conditioner, which I think is excellent. It's actually not made directly for kids, but works really well on their hair and leaves it soft and defines the curls.

The other products I tried are Mixed Chicks leave in conditioner (too harsh IMHO) and Curly Qs (the conditioning spray works pretty well). I use the Curly Q shampoo and conditioner for their hair and its excellent. Leaves their hair soft, and smells amazing!

Good luck. I would go with the Aveeno leave in conditioner as a first choice.
