DD screams with bowel movements

I'm starting to get concerned about Liv. She screams and cries every time she has a bowel movement. Her poo isn't especially hard and I give her lots of juice and fresh fruits and veggies every day. I just don't know what to do for her. DH says she's just going through a stage but it really seems to cause her pain. Her face turns all red and she shakes with the effort. I would appreciate any suggestions on how to help her. If it doesn't get better soon I'm going to have to take her to the doctor.

And as far as I can tell this isn't caused by any certain foods and it has been going on for over a week now.

 

I hope someone writes in with good advice. I will say that my sister dealt with this with her boy from about 18 months to 6 years old! I am not saying it is the same thing, but he actually developed a fear of going because it hurt, causing him to back up. It wasn't like standard constipation. Anyway, they finally had to use a medication until he grew out of it. I would just keep an eye and it might not be a bad idea to call and mention it to a nurse for a professional opinion.

 

Has she been eating more solid and cutting back milk? Give her more water. Give her yogurt daily. You can buy ??? (I forgot the name) from the pharmacy. Insert into her butt. It will help her go easier. We used to do it to our son.

If her stool is soft, I'd be concerned it is something else, like irritation or soreness on her bottom or internally. I'd call the doctor before trying suppositories or anything else.

 

Ditto. Sarah used to have trouble with pooping, but we could see that her poops were really hard. If that doesn't seem to be the problem, I'd ask the doc before you try anything at home -- you don't want to make it worse. Giving her more yogurt in the meantime can't hurt, I guess.

 

DS1 had this issue BAD! No matter the consistency of his bowel movements, and it lasted through potty training, but at that point he would just not poop cause it caused him pain... the doc did nothing for us except rec. mineral oil... looking back we used WAY too much (it can really deydrate them) we didnt have that problem, but in anycase, it resolved.... eventually.
The mineral oil was also cause they only could assume he was constipated, he was not.

Sorry that may not have helped but we have been there... looking back, I think it was just a constant upse tummy

 

One of my girls has a "tight sphincter", as the Dr puts it. He told me to massage her little butt-opening (haha) a few times a day. Try to stretch it out a little. When I am doing this, she usually poops without crying or getting red-faced. But don't forget to put vaseling or some lubricant on your finger or Q-tip or whatever first.

 

My daughter had an anal fissure during her second year (caused by large bowel movements). Then the fissure caused her pain when she pooped and she would hold it so it was a bad cycle. We put Benefiber in all of her drinks and upped her fruit and veggie intake. That helped a lot and she rarely has problems now.

 

Thank you for all of the comments everyone! After over a month of this, DD is finally having pain free bm's. I had just made an appt. with her doc and then she suddenly stopped crying with them. I have no idea what changed for her but I'm glad she isn't doing it anymore. I just hope she doesn't start up again. So thank you all for your comments and advice!

 

Glad she's getting better! Hopefully it was just a weird baby phase and it's all smooth sailing (so to speak) from here on in!
