We just turned 2, and are still in cribs, and not totally potty training. Curious to know which you did first. It's hard to fathom potty training when they can't get to the potty at night, but then, they are totally happy and sleeping wonderfully in cribs.

We did toddler bed transition first. Mainly because they decided for us. They were climbing out of cribs. So, switching them was a must. They were not showing any signs of being potty trained, at that time.

So, as far as advice on potty training in cribs...I have none (sorry!). However, I will say that even though ours were in regular beds, they would still call for us at night when they had to go. Plus, the waking up at night to go was rare. We would just have them go before bed. DS stayed in pull-ups at night for a long time even after being day trained because he couldn't make it through the night and didn't have that brain to bladder signal that woke him up during his sleep.

well... I attempted potty training (haphazardly) right at 24 mo. and then decided about the same time to switch to toddler beds b/c of a trip we had in 2 months... UGH!

toddler beds went horribly for us. and within a week of coming back from our trip I put the cribs back up! That ended up being mid July. we were still trying to potty train, and another month later I finally got the 3day program and never looked back... sure the kids can't get out of bed at night to potty... but they can call for us... they don't typically call out though.

I had such a bad experience with toddler/open beds that I wouldn't recommend giving up cribs for anything! I did crib tents for a year for my ds, and now he's broken it twice so I took it down... he crawls in and out when he needs, and is doing well, w/staying in at sleep time, so I think we'll switch his to a toddler bed this weekend...

    big choices... good luck!

DD had her bed before potty training, she climbed out of her crib...so bed for her was 18 months and PT'ed at 2.5
DS , we did both around the same time. I did the 3 day PT method with him in September (so around 32 months) and he was moved to a toddler bed a month before turning 3.

Twin beds at 2 1/2 and potty training at 2 3/4. Turns out it wouldn't have mattered for us because neither of mine get out of bed to go to the bathroom.

Beds at 2.5y Potty trained at 3y. One of the many reasons we waited to potty train was because I LOVED them sleeping in cribs and waited until we had to transition to toddler beds.

We did the toddler bed transition long before potty training.

Beds at 20 months, attempted potty training at 25 months (didn't work), tried again at 29 months and it was easy. But... my girls are two months away from four and no where near night trained. We live in a very arid environment so I still send them to bed with a sippy of water.

So I think you should potty train or do beds first, whichever you want. They don't need to be coordinated since most kids day train a bit earlier than they night train.

We did it all at roughly the same time. Moved to beds around 2.5- a little past. Started PT a bit before that, but just did it during the day.

They are fully potty trained during the day now, but still wear pull-ups at night. 95% of the time DD wakes up dry. She has never woken up in the night to go.
DS is about 50/50 if he'll wake up dry or not. And he does occasionally wake up to go in the night. But he just calls out that he needs to potty and waits for me to go get him. (He also sleeps on their top bunk.)

Toddler Beds for all my kids around 20 months or so. Older kids pt'd at 3 yrs and 3.5 yrs each, and my twins are just 2 and are nowhere near pt'ing.

Day training and night training are not at ALL the same thing (at least they weren't for us)...

Day training: 2y9m for Amy, 3y3m for Sarah
Out of the cribs: 3y3m for both kids
Night training: 4y6m for Amy, not yet (they're almost 5.5) for Sarah!

We never really "trained" at night, just waited for them to stop peeing in their sleep.

The nice thing about being on the super-late training plan is that by the time they are ready to use the bathroom during the night, they are old enough to go all by themselves! Amy sleeps 10 hours straight for the most part, but every once in a while she'll get up to pee in the wee hours (so to speak).

Potty trained at 2 3/4, moved into beds at almost 3. My guys rarely needed to pee at night, and if they did, they called for us. It worked well doing it in that order, in that once they did move to beds a big excuse for hoping out was "I need to pee" (though they rarely did!) I could see that may have been worse in the midst of potty training.

I was going to try to track down when we switched to a bed, but it was so long ago that I think I probably lost my facebook posts. But it was way before 2, and yes we kept naps and still nap most days at almost 4. Then we potty trained after. I did have a gate at the door and a potty seat with a towel under it in their room. I didn't want to give them access to the bathroom as they still play in everything and get into medicines. They have both been fully trained for well over a year.

I started potty training before switching to beds, but they could climb out of their cribs so easily by then it didn't make much of a difference! Also, they were never much for wetting during the night anyway. Even long before they were potty trained, they would have dry diapers in the morning. I did switch them to beds while potty training, right before their 3rd birthday.

We are still in cribs...they haven't given us any reason to change that.....until now. They are pt'd, but wear diapers overnight. Now, DD calls out for Mommy at 330AM to use the potty. Won't wet her diaper.

Grrrr...I guess the toddler beds will happen soon

ABSOLUTELY! My two are 37 months and we will be napping for a long time coming! Naps do take place in separate rooms though :)

Yep still napping here too in toddler beds, we kept the exact same nap/bedtime routine and the switch went fairly problem free. After about 2 weeks of freedom ds suddenly decided to play before bedtime, for about 2 hrs one night, but I simply set up a pack n play and everytime he got out of bed, I'd put him in the pnp, minus his "guys" (stuffed animals he sleeps with) and minus paci's. It only took dd a couple of times to decide that staying in bed with her guys and paci's was much better. Ds was a little more stubborn but within a week he was back to staying in bed. Naps have been problem free.

My 3 were not ready at 2 to be potty trained. When they turned 3 I started and all 3 were trained in 2 weeks or less.

We attempted toddler beds in June. My daughter stuck with it, we had to put my son back in a bed and give them separate rooms in August. We potty trained in Oct. My son got the potty training immediately and never looked back. Even though he was in a crib he'd call for me. We put him in a bed in Nov (not because of the potty training thing, just figured it was time. luckily it went better this time.) But I still put a gate on his room at night and he calls for me when he has to go. Even if the gate wasn't there, he'd probably still call for me, and I think I'd prefer it that way rather than them getting up alone and wondering what they can get into. My daughter was in a bed before the potty training, though she still isn't completely trained. And no where near night trained. She never wakes at night to go.

I wasn't sure what to expect with potty training, and I wondered if they had to be in a bed first too. But after going through it I see it really doesn't matter. And I wasn't even concerned about night training at the time, it just so happend my son was ready for it.

I forgot to answer the question I quoted above! We didn't lose naps. My daughter is a great sleeper, so she was fine soon after we transitioned. The second time we transitioned my son he was older, and in a separate room, so he did fine with naps immediately. It was such a relief transitioning him the second time.

so glad that it seems lots of you kept naps... maybe I didn't try it long enough. what I do find interesting is that when I've seen other threads on toddler beds & naps, many many people said that they lost naps about the same time... maybe it's a different group of people posting...

yay for anyone who's been able to successfully graduate their kid to a bed and keep naps!
