Development of ID Twins

One of my girls started to crawl at 6.5 months, she sits up on her own and yesterday I found her standing in her crib.
Her sister on the other hand has just started to belly crawl now. I know it's still early and a lot of babies that age don't belly crawl, it's just that her sister is so advanced. I remember reading somewhere that ID twins should be developing at a fairly similar speed. Clearly not the case here. What's your experience with ID twins? Did yours develop the same?

We aren't positive on our girls zygosity yet but generally they hit their milestones with in a week or so of each other

 

i call humbug on whoever said that they tend to develop similarly! even though they're ID they're still two individuals & will develop at their own rate. my girls (ID) didn't hit any milestones at the same time. Riley tended to hit all the social milestones first (first to smile, laugh, coo, babble, wave, etc) while Danika tended to focus more on the physical stuff (first to crawl, pull up, walk, etc). i wouldn't worry about it. it sounds like your one little girl might just be an over achiever.

 

Mine have always been within a day or maybe 2 of each other on stuff. Teeth however were same day. Walking, crawling day or 2 apart etc.

 

My twins are ID and while many milestones were within days of each other, others were not. Charlee walked a month before Kaydee and Kaydee said her first word about 3 weeks before Charlee. It seems that they switched off who was a little ahead on each milestone. They may be genetically identical, but I swear a lot of development has more to do with determination and curiosity.

 

My 2 were pretty much weeks apart as far as milestones. Sitting, crawling and walking. But it all works out in the end.

 

My ID boys didn't do too much at the same rate either. They didn't even get their teeth within a week of each other. As for crawling/standing/sitting, so much of it depends on muscle control and weight. My boys have always weighed about 2lbs different. That makes it much harder or easier to do something. Now...when it comes to pooping...it's been within 5 mins of the other since birth!! :laughing:

 

Ditto! My girls are weeks to a month or so apart on many things. Samantha seems more motivated to "go" and has rolled, crawled, stood, and now walked waaaay before Alexis. I attribute it to personality- Alexis is content just hangin' out and is in no hurry to go anywhere.

I wouldn't sweat it! Just mention the milestones at each well baby visit and the doctor will tell you when to worry. Don't stress unnecessarily!

 

My girls alternated who developed a certain skill first. One would bound ahead, while the other lagged behind. Then that one would surge ahead of her sister. They took turns.

 

Jess had a heart defect so she did everything super late compared to jazz. Jazz walked at 10 months jessy walked at 16.5 months. Not sure off the top of my head the rest of the mile stones

 

I started this EXACT same thread about 6 months ago .

My ID girls are about a month apart now on the physical milestones. At first the gap was only about a week (head holding) then it was about 2 weeks (rolling, sitting) then a month (crawling, standing, first steps and walking). Like a PP said Audrée is stronger physically and hits these milestones first whereas Amélie hit the social milestones first (smiling, waving, giving hugs and kisses, etc). All this being said once Amélie masters the physical skill she does it faster and better than Audrée. She might not be the stronger once but she is certainly the go-getter. I call her my Kamakaze Baby...she has NO fear!

The way they are developing is totally indicative of their personalities and I no longer worry about the differences. They are COMPLETELY difference people which I find amazing every day since they have the same parenting and share DNA. Try not to worry...as you start to see their personalities emerge I'm sure the differences will make more sense...they will always have their own individual strengths and weaknesses .

 

My ID boys are almost the same on milestones, sometimes a week or so apart, but sofar that's about it. They aren't crawling yet, and although they're both teething we haven't seen a tooth yet, so some of those milestones could change things up. They do seem to have different strengths though, and develop their skills in different ways. One of my twins seems a little stronger physically and was rolling and does it with more ease and much more often. My other twin laughed first and babbles more and I think will likely start saying words first. They just seem to take turns when it comes to going first on their milestones.

 

DD1 was always a month ahead of DD2, until after they started walking and then DD2 took the lead for skills like running, jumping, climbing, etc... strange huh? i think DD1's more cautious personality caused her to be less adventerous with motor skills and therefore slower to acquire them

 

Most of the time my Baby B would do things first by a few days. But, my Baby A walked first by 2 weeks. It was weird!

 

thats how my twins are one is more vocal while the other does the physical stuff first

 

Mine take turns. Baby B will figure something out and practice it until he was good at it. The Baby A would watch and once B had it down pat he would copy his brother and pick it up real quick. Baby B is better at the physical stuff and Baby A is better at the vocal stuff. Baby A is more interested in building with blocks and Baby A is better at throwing them to see if they bounce.

Their personalities are so different that for the longest time I wouldn't admit that they are ID but now that they are closer to the same size I can't deny it any more Especially when I get them mixed up.

 

In my opinion ever baby develops differently! If they were not twins you would not have anyone to compare them too, they would be their own!

As for my ID girls, they pretty much developed at the same rate, or with in one week of each other, one twin would see the other one do it!

 

Most of the physical milestones were reached close to each other..but I also have one that reaches social first while thew other conquers physical stuff.
