I don't really remmeber when but about 2 we stopped using baby shampoo and then used kids tear free. I was noticing that the same day or first thing in the morning if they had a night bath that their hair woudl stink and smell sweaty. Not fun. So I have started using just the regular shampoo that I use and it has been much better and gets their hair cleaner. DD hair has less tangles and looks better. Just wondering what everyone else is using. I am careful not to get it in their eyes, but not sure what to do when I want them to start washing their own hair under supervision as I woldn't want them getting it in eyes which is probably inevitable with them doing their own, or at least helping.

Also what age do/did you have them start helping wash hair or bodies?

Around age 4 we started having them use a washcloth or loofa to scrub their bodies. DS needed a bit more guidance. I still do their hair. We just started using regular shampoo on DD2. DD1 (will be 8 next month) started washing her own hair probably in the last year or so. She has really long, thick hair and I still sometimes have to double check that she's rinsing it well enough. She's done really well with not getting it in her eyes.

We started using regular shampoo around age 2.5-3 for our dd, she has long blond hair and it was constantly tangled, I finally asked the hair dresser and she recommended switching to regular mild shampoo (we use dove for all of us) and a conditioner. It makes a WORLD of difference in how tangled her hair gets. Apparently blond hair tangles the worst, and also retains the most static, poor girl looks like she stuck her finger in a light socket if we don't condition her hair. We also have to use an anti frizz serum/lotion in the mornings to help contain the fuzziness!

As for body washing, she can wash herself in the shower now for the most part, and she's almost 4.5 yrs old. But even my 8 yr old ds (who just started washing his hair in the shower last year) still misses some bubbles in his hair sometimes! Fortunately, he's shaved pretty short, so it's no big deal. I anticipate having to wash my dd's hair for quite some time yet! :)

Right now I am using tear free shampoo for the kids. I let both of them practice washing themselves (they are pretty good about getting their bellies and arms) but I go over them a second time because they miss a lot of spots (i.e. their legs).

I have boys with short hair so there's not much room for error. We use the L'oreal kids shampoo/conditioner in various fragrances for the oldest(he likes watermelon). he then uses either a bar of soap or body wash to clean the rest of him. I leave it up to him and he is never stinky so I think we are ok.

    You don't say!

We're currently using a kid's tear free shampoo with conditioner on both of them.

We still use california baby shampoo and bodywash and will for a long time... too many chemicals in tear-free shampoo.

We use tear-free kids shampoo (I think its loreal), and regular conditioner (suave). When I do the conditioner, I just make sure they tip their heads back so it doesn't get into their eyes.

We use Suave tear-free 2-n-1 kids shampoo. DD has curly hair so she really needs the conditioner to help tame her hair. With DS, it doesn't matter so much because I tend to keep his hair pretty short.

They both like to practice washing their bodies, but like others I go back over them because they still miss spots.
And are mostly interested in washing their booties. <_<

DS is super sensitive about getting even water around his eyes, so it will be a long time before I switch with him. DD will just depend on her hair and what she needs.

I have 3 kids with eczema. The oldest is growing out of it. But that said, because of him I know that many adult soaps make it much worse. So we still use a dye free, fragrant light, tear free body wash for all 4 kids. My oldest uses his own adult shampoo. My middle son (8) still refuses to use something that's not tear free, although with hockey 7 days a week, he really needs it! The twins still use tear free.
Both the oldest boys started bathing or showering without any help around 7-8 yr olds. I've been know to tell them to get back in after smelling their hair, LOL. My oldest has long "hockey hair" so it requires the care like a girl with long hair. Fortunately, he cares so it's rare that I have to tell him to wash more throughly.

Bahahahaha! Yep! Except K has super thick hair, I was cutting her bangs out of her eyes by 6 months old, and by a year she had a pebbles piggy tail in her hair. So, when she takes her fuzzy winter jacket off, her 12-15 inch hair sticks straight out just like that! Priceless!

We still use kids' shampoo because they enjoy the pretty bottles and yummy smells, but it is not tear-free and probably has just as many chemicals as adult shampoo. They rarely get it in their eyes, and if they do, it just stings and we hand them a washcloth. We use regular conditioner because I buy giant bottles of Pantene anyway.

If they had eczema or sensitivities, we'd have to be more careful, but it doesn't seem to bother either of them.

At age 5 we are starting to let them wash themselves, but only under direct supervision. If I don't watch closely, they a) go through enormous amounts of shampoo and b) only wash their stomachs and feet. And I always have to rinse their hair or else they would leave most of the shampoo in.

Hey, while we're on the subject of shampoo, what removes Vaseline from hair?

R has some dandruff brewing and I thought I could just use vaseline like I did when he was a baby to get rid of the dry patch on his noggin. Ummm, it didn't wash out. Any ideas?

I agree with this! The tear free stuff has numbing agents in the shampoo to keep it "tear free".

I use what I can find. Target has some nice stuff in the kid section. I can't think of what we have now. I need to find some new shampoo for myself that is organic so when I do, I will start using that on their hair but keep using baby stuff on their skin.

We use Earth Mama Angel Baby because it has ZERO toxins and scores great on the cosmetics safety database. It is NOT a tear free solution however.
We let our soon to be 3 year olds wash their own bodies, and help with their hair, but we remind them not to get it in their eyes and help them with rinsing.

Bex, we had to do the same thing when DD decided to bath her body in Vaseline. Let's just say that DH learned a lesson not to leave Vaseline in her reach ever again.

For future reference: Baby oil and regular shampoo. It seems counterintuitive putting oil on oil, but the mineral oil combines with the petroleum based oil, and the mineral oil can be washed out with a good strength shampoo.
