what do you think about using a "nickname" as a "real" name?

Just got our BFP and we're already talking names- lol! Anyways, ever since SIL "stole" the girls name that I'd had for decades, I've been thinking girls names and I've really grown to love the name Ellie. I originally thought I wanted to name her something else formally, and then shorten it and just call her Ellie. However, there aren't a lot of "EL..." names that I love. (Elizabeth or Elliana are maybes...) But besides, part of me thinks, well, if I know I only want to call her Ellie, then I should just name her Ellie! However, DH doesn't like that at all. He says, no one names a kid Bob, they name him Robert, then call him Bob.

So what are your thoughts on the matter??? Just wondering what others think?

 

My boss's daughter is Ellie and I **love** that name. Love it. I think it stands alone, I never even considered that it may be short for something else (in her case, it isn't).

 

I like Ellie, but I kind of agree with your husband and think she should have a "full" name. There are other choices out there beside the obvious Elanor, Elizabeth. Here are a few that I know of:

I like it. I think it's fine. If I was to just hear the name I wouldn't even think it was just a nickname. These days you never know !

I like Ellie but here's another thought, I know a Mary Elizabeth who is called emie. So how about LE as initials pronounced Ellie.

 

I agree with your DH if we are talking about "Bob," but I think Ellie stands on it's own. If it were me (and actually this is the plan if I ever have another girl), I'd go with Elizabeth and call her Ellie.

 

I have an Elizabeth and we call her Ellie. All of my girls have long, formal sounding names that we shorten, as you can see by my siggy. I like the option of a more formal name that they can use when they grow up, even though they will always be Annie, Joey, and Ellie to me!

 

I would totally name her Ellie! I think it is a great name! CONGRATULATIONS!!!!

if i had been given a girl *sigh* her name would have been Elle (Pronounced 'L') , Ellie for short.
I'm a huge fan of one syllable names but i think if i wasnt her name would be Ellen, with Elle or Ellie for short.

I love the idea of naming someone just a nickname. My brother's name is "Sam", not Samuel. I think it's great!

 

Personally, I wouldn't do it. She might like it, but she might end up wishing she had a slightly more formal (and less little-girlish) name as an option for future professional settings. I love Ellie as a nickname but I don't think it really stands on its own.

 

If Ellie is the name that you love, I'd definitely just go with Ellie.
I've never understood the reasoning for naming a child something you never intend to call him/her. It's along the same lines as giving a child a middle name that you intend to use as the first name--why not just give it as the first name then?
But, anyway... Ellie is a very nice name.
If your DH is a stickler about it, there's also Ella, but I'd say go with your gut.

 

My daughter is Elia (Ellie-ah) & we call her Ellie. We decided against naming her Ellie because we wanted her to have the option of using a less "cutesy" name when she grew up. My name is Haley & it can sometimes be hard to be taken seriously with a name typically associated with the kindergarten set, so that was important to me. I've always put the word "Dr." in front of names then thought about if it sounded right to me, haha!

 

I like Ellie alone, Ellie mae is very cute but I have noticed the name Eleanor/Eleanora on the rise with the nicknames being Ellie, Elle, Ella or Nora. I am not a fan of Eleanor but weirdly kinda like Eleanora plus I like all the nick names Good luck I also like the name Emme but my DH does not!!!

Since it's been bumped I want to give my opinion.

I am thinking of changing my legal name to my nickname. It is such a PITA to go by one name and be named something else, for instance:

at work, my email is rebecca.XXX@XXX. But I sign everything "Becky." So everyone asks me if my email is Becky.XXX@XXX. I have to tell them no. And then there are those stubborn people that call you by the name either in your email address or what pops up on the phone at work, which in my case is Rebecca.

I don't like Rebecca, I wish my parents had just named me Becky. An old coworker's given name was Becky and she never had any questions about her contact information, no one ever called her "Rebecca" at the store (you know how people call you by the name on your credit card?)

Also, my SIL is rebecca.XXX. We have the same exact legal name. Although I changed my maiden to my middle so there is that distinction. It's less of a pain now that we've moved away from each other, but there were times that people would call me looking for her and vice versa.

 

My husband has went by a nickname all his life and he loves it. His name is James Montgomery (named after some general or something) but his parents knew the whole time that they would call him Monty. I, personally, love nicknames. I think it just adds such a neat personal touch to the individual.
