New trick: standing up in the crib, and won't sit/lie back down.

G is very proud of herself now - in addition to being a pro crawler, she can pull herself up on a lot of different things and does so regularly. Last weekend she decided to pull herself up and stand in her crib (mattress has been lowered, yes). She now wakes up crying LOUD in the middle of the night and is almost *driven* to stand up. She's tired, but stands up and cries for us.

Since I'm not convinced that she yet knows how to get back down (the rails are higher than anything else she pulls up on during the day) we've been letting her cry for a few minutes, then go in and lay her back down. Did it maybe 5 times the first night, 10 times the second night, 5 times the third night, then last night there was a reprieve (they were very, very tired - less daytime napping and a later bedtime). I assume it'll start back up tonight.

I've seen her plop down once or twice now, but I'm hesitant to let her CIO (again! it was a blissful 1 month of sleep) until I know she can get herself down and lay back down - especially in the middle of the night when she's half asleep still.

Any suggestions? How long does this last?

My DD did it for about a week and then stopped.

All my kids did it for about a week as well and then stopped.

Awesome. I can survive a week.
Did you have to re-train / CIO once they stopped doing the new trick?

I feel like I've been sleep training for 11 months now, lol! We have good nights and horrible nights and I still have a hard time figuring out why they can't just SLEEP!!!! Once the week passed they did go back to their 'normal' sleep patterns so hopefully yours will too :).

It might help the phase to pass quicker if you help her practice getting down during the day. When she is standing up on something (or even put her in her crib to demonstrate) show her how to 'walk' her hands down until she can sit down again.

Well it's been 2 nights in a row now that she hasn't done the hard-cry/standing-up-in-crib thing, so maybe we are over the hurdle! At least with G. Can't wait for S to start doing it.

Thanks for all the advice. She's kind of plopping down on her own now, I did try to show her how to work her way down the crib rails once or twice but I don't think she's at that level of comprehension yet.

    Thanks again!
