Jacob gnaws on EVERYTHING because of teeth. Yes, I give him appropriate teethers but if he gets ahold of a book he shreds it. I give him those soft books but he prefers the board books. Any advice? I love our board books and he has destroyed quite a few favorites.

    yep! and our cribs!! UGH!

I'd get some $1 ones at the Target dollar section... I had to put most books up and out of the way when they had free reign of an area. I'd only read them the books myself so that they wouldn't ruin any more!

My boys chewed a lot of wood around here. I still catch them sometimes biting on the edge of the coffee table. I don't understand the appeal -- we're well beyond teething. The good news is that they will eventually appreciate their books. The bad news is that most of our board books looked like they were attacked by a horde of rodents. I tried locking them up between uses but in the grand scheme of things, I'd rather it be the books than the furniture.

    Alright I have 4 kids.

I have toys and books that date back to when my oldest ds was a baby, 8.5 yrs ago.

    And then we had Liam.

We are rapidly tossing books out that have last 8+ yrs, because "chomper" has destroyed them! We have toys that have teeth marks in them. Our crib rail, that made it unmarred through 2 children and thru the twins early months, is now a mangled mess of scratches, scrapes, and missing finish because of this child. He even chewed the stickers off of some of my fisher price toys. Toys that are in excellent shape from my older kids I might add, but are now probably unsaleworthy because they no longer have the stickers on them.

:gah:  Yes, I have a beaver here too!

YEP! S & O  to eat their knowledge! I got sick of having to throw away books so recently I made books a 'not in your mouth' item. Ours are in a basket in the living room so I see them when they do it and remind them. If they do it again, I throw whatever book it is in the the PNP to get it away from them. It's cut down on the # of books we're throwing away. I couldn't take it anymore!

Oh yes, I had a beaver too. We had the Hop on Pop and there were literally several chomps out of that book. My darling DD apparently thought it was a snack, tasty or loved the book so much, she wanted to be one with it. I did have to take the books out of her room and away from her until she stopped (and thankfully she did).

This is Jacob. I have toys/books from my brother whose oldest is 14. Jacob has destroyed them. His crib comes from my brother's oldest and it was in pristine condition, Jacob fixed that. I swear, one day I saw him go for the window sills like the dogs used to do. I am considering bitter apple, it worked for the dogs (that is a joke, we will keep trying the normal way).

Does Jacob seem to be more active than other kids his age?

I ask because when I was reading about why kids chew, I found an article that linked it to not getting as much exercise as their body desires. I had to laugh because my toddlers were in constant motion and I couldn't fathom how they could get more exercise short of strapping weights on them. They were unable to be still long enough to watch a 30-minute video until they were 4. But, I wondered if it could still be related -- are highly active kids more likely to chew?

I've also recently discovered that they've started chewing (grinding their teeth) in their sleep. AAAARGH! I'm going to start them on after-school gum chewing because I cannot make their school day more active... but just something to watch for.

Now that you mention it, Liam is definitely my most active child. But he does have moments of calmness (he's been sitting watching diego for about 20 mins now eating breakfast). But he was my earliest roller, crawler, walker, runner, climber...etc out of all 4 kids. He's much much better about chewing now (now it's ripping the pages from books ), but maybe there is a correlation?! Hmm....

Oh yes, Jacob is the most active of the three. We are thinking of powering the house by installing a large hamster wheel/generator.

ugh for the chewing AND tearing books! I think my new "new mommy survival kit" will include a large roll of packing tape to repair all the books and game boxes! I'm always using it to fix books and such!

I am curious about the activity vs. chewing... our two are definitely on the high end of the active scale that's for sure!

I have the same problem. Both of the cribs are chewed on the ends and the front rail. I got coveres so it won't get worse. I was hoping to sell them when the kids are in real beds but it won't be for a great price. We have french style door in our living room. DD has chewed thru the paint and the original varnish, down to the original wood. Most of the books are ruined. Both kids chew on them but DD real likes to eat the paper and puts a lot of effort into ripping off pieces.

My guys stopped teething on stuff as much once I gave them the banana toothbrushes sold at bru. They are usually $8 each and only come in yellow. These were real savers when the molars were starting to come through. Other teethers with liquid can get punctured.

Want to repair books? I found special clear book tape (used in libraries) online at amazon. Haven't seen it in regular stores. We Love books here & this helped extend the life of many of our favorites. (to read & eat)

We honestly have so many books at this point, that it doesn't hurt my feelings too much to toss a few! And I always get a few new books for them at christmas time, plus we pull out our christmas stash of books...books are never ending in this house! :D

I don't mind tossing some, but when I know they really love one, it kind of sucks as I refuse to re-buy it new. If I found it in good condition used I'd buy it again. :)
