    Hello,

I am so glad I found this place :)

We had our first ultrasound at 7w5d and found out we are having twins. I am concerned because they mentioned the babies are in "one sac" but they didn't go into detail about what that means. I don't know if that means we have a possibility of momo twins? My midwife did mention TTTS but told me not to worry. We have our second ultrasound on November 8, which I am anxiously awaiting. I will be 11w4d at our second ultrasound, this is the day of our NT scan.

I feel like I don't know a thing about what is happening with the twins right now and that our next appointment will shed some more light. In the mean time, I am hoping for the best.

Here are the pics of the first u/s.:

    Take Care,

Congrats on your twins! This is a great place to be!! It is hard to tell there are 2 babies in the pic you posted. By 11 weeks you should be able to more clearly see 2 babies! As you have more ultrasounds it will become much more apparent as to what kind of twins you are having. I would not even worry about what kind they are and any possible problems, it will just stress you out and right now you don't need that! Good luck :)

    Thanks for the reply :)

I forgot to mention that my midwife couldn't get them in one shot so each pic is a different twin. One is measuring 5 days behind the other. Thanks again!

Congrats. If they are in one sac it does mean they are identical. It is a long and crazy road to the birth of the babies. Enjoy it and don't stress. Welcome. It is a great place for answers.

I don't understand how, if they are in the same sac, how the midwife did not get them in one shot? When we saw our twins for the first time there were 2 sacs and 2 babies but they very easily fit into one shot because they are so small.

Thanks for the welcome everyone :)

I am not sure why my midwife couldn't get them both in one shot, I am assuming that everyone is different? She did have another doctor come in and confirm the twins. I hope I can them both in one shot next time!

Welcome and congrats on your twins! If they are indeed in one sac then they are momo twins.

Welcome! The only reason I can think that your midwife couldn't get both in 1 shot is that 1 is behind the other so the angle on the u/s wand is important? Anyway, they are going to grow big enough pretty soon so that they can tell you definitely. Congrats on your twins!

    Jessica,
Congrats on your twins! I also found out I was having twins at a 7 week ultrasound. They could tell right away that mine were identical because they were in the same chorion (the outermost of the two fetal membranes - amnion is the innermost). However, they could not tell at 7 weeks if they were sharing an amniotic sac or not. It appeared that they were, but sometimes there is a dividing membrane and this membrane usually can't be seen until 14 weeks. At 14 weeks I started seeing a perinatologist and they did find a dividing membrane, so my twins are mono-di (mono-chorionic, or one chorion / di-amniotic, or two amniotic sacs).

    Good luck! Keep us posted!

Great info on the post right above mine --

Yes, typically if in the same sac they are identical. However, I know my gf was told she was having momo twins (same sac) but then once sent to a Level II scan, they found a small dividing membrane between the babies. So they believe they are still identical (as they are sharing 1 placenta) but she is at a much lower risk now that there is a membrane separating them.

Sometimes the membrane can not be seen until you are further along. Once they find out if you have 1 placenta or 2, you will know your risk status better.

Good Luck and Congrats on the Twins!!!! :D

Congrats! I'm a new twin mom as well. Currently 10 weeks as well too! Mine are fraternal though, in different sacs. I just had my 9 week ultrasound and we were able to see a lot. Faces, arms, hands, eye sockets, cheeks, movement...

Congrats on your twins how exciting I know im excited about mine.

Here was my 9 week 4 day ultrasound.

    When is your next ultrasound?

    Kinny,
Did you know that twins in 2 separate sacs can be identical or fraternal? In identicals, the number of placentas and sacs depends on the day the embryo split. Barbara Luke's book goes into great detail about this, but I believe it is this: if the embryo splits before day 5, you get 2 placentas & 2 sacs. If it splits between day 5 and 8, you get 1 placenta & 2 sacs. And if it splits after day 8, you get 1 placenta & 1 sac.

Of course, fraternal twins can only have 2 placentas and 2 sacs, although the placentas can fuse together and appear to be one.

Yes, Kinny mine were in separate sacs and are definitely ID. We did a DNA test on them after they were born.

1 sac = identical every time, but that sac might have a membrane (mono/di) or not a membrane (mono/mono)
2 sacs = either fraternal or identical. If they are boy/girl then they are definitely identical. If they are the same sex then you'll have to wait until after they are born to determine if they are id or frat. Obviously if they have different colored hair or very different features or have different blood types then they are frats. But if it's too hard to tell and if they have the same blood, then you'll probably want to send a sample of their DNA away for testing.

Congrats to all the newly pregnant moms of twins!

YAY Congratulations on the twin pregnancy!

Like others have said, yes if they share the same sac they are identical.

    Mine are identical boys.

The key thing to keep in mind when dealing with any pregnancy, but especially with the riskier ones like two babies in one sac, is to NOT start researching things on the internet. It will only make you worry and in term will stress you and the babies out. So please, for your own sanity, stay off the net! Ask away on TS before even thinking about going to google. :)

I hope you have a very enjoyable and easy pregnancy! Congrats again and welcome to the ID club :)

Yes - like someone mentioned - BACK AWAY FROM GOOGLE! its the worst thing ever if you suspect anything like TTTS could crop up in the future.

My boys shared a placenta but had their own sacs - the membrane was so fine and whispy that it took 25min the first time just to find it - and it was gone from view as fast as it showed up - but it WAS there. The same happened at every u/s.

    CONGRATS on your babes!!! :) :) :) :)

Thanks everyone!! I used to be a google freak!!! Until my mom was diagnosed with Stage 3 colon cancer. I spent about 5 minutes googling her diagnosis and had to stop and never did it again!!! I do want to be informed but since I don't know what I am facing yet, I will stay away! Thanks again!
