When first teaching them to use a spoon and they mostly think it is a toy, do you just give them a spoon and food at each meal and let them go for it or do you let them go for it but also try to get some food into them?

When we started they did think it was a toy, but at every meal I would show them how to do use it. After awhile they will DEMAND to do it on their own and try. Let them do it on their own, but when you see them having trouble step in. They will get the hang of it especially if they see you and others using utensils as well. :)

I agree with this. I also found that it was easier for my two to learn how to use a fork then the spoon. Another thing that helped was using thicker foods for the spoon like applesauce and mashed potatoes. Good luck!

We're still working on utensils here.. they finally got the hang of getting stuff on their spoon or fork and then they pick it off with their fingers and put it in their mouth. Progress, right? I usually let them hold it the whole time and show them a few times throughout the meal what they're supposed to be doing. Some days they're really good at it, other days they could care less.

ITA with this; forks are much easier than spoons for the beginner!

Heh, my guys are over 2 and they *still* use their fingers as much as utensils, even though we have them at every meal, and they know how to use them. :pardon: Most of the time I find them scooping the last of their ice cream from the bowl with their fingers.

When we first started utensils we would give them forks to practice with while we ate our meal and they had some finger foods. Then we'd top them up with baby food; us using a spoon, and them holding a fork or spoon to distract them. :good:
