My husband and I will have flu shots soon. I never got one in 10yrs. But because of the kids, we will get this year. I'm not sure if I want the kids to have it? What do you think? And do you let your los have it? Thanks

I'm getting one, and so are my girls. Not sure my hubby is - he got one last year when I was PG and complained that it GAVE him the flu. (It didn't. Dramatic).

I don't really have strong feelings about it one way or the other - I just don't want my girls to get the flu.

I got one while I was pregnant and had an asthma attack, so I won't be getting one. The girls have already had their first round with no side effects.

We don't get them. I have gone the homeopathic route for years and will be doing that with my LO's too.

We are getting them. DH gets his free at work. The boys have had the first half and will get the second half on Oct. 11. I'll probably get mine shortly thereafter. Keep in mind that since it is the first time they are getting it, they have to get half, wait a month, and get the other half. And it won't be fully effective until a month after they've had the second half. For example, if you get it today:
    1st half - Sept. 30
2nd half - Oct. 30 (or a few days after)
    Fully effective - Nov. 30

Our pedi recommended getting them ASAP since it takes time to get both shots and have them effective and flu season will be in full swing before we know it. My point is, if you're going to get it for the babies, I would do it ASAP.

We will all be getting them. Unfortunately, our pedi doesn't have it in yet and we probably won't be able to get it until Oct. 20th. :headbang:

Ok. My twins will have 6 month check up on oct 13. I'm sure they will have next immunization. I don't want then to have flu shot at the time. So when should they have it? I'm afraid side effects but I am also afraid that they'd get flu

There are no side effects to the flu shot - I couldn't even tell my LO's had had it 2 minutes after the shot, so I would be inclined to get it with the other shots. If you really don't want to, I would get it before the 13th if you can because they have to have the second dose a month later.

I'm sorry I'm so nervous about the flu shot. I didn't get one when I was pregnant them either because I read horrible stories about flu shots.

So my twins will be 6 months on oct6 (4 months adjusted on sept 30). Is it too early for them to get flu shot now? I thouhgt I read somewhere flu shots after 6 months

Everyone in our home that can have a flu shot will get one. Last year was the first year I had one ever. I got it because of the H1N1 scare and I planned on getting pregnant. The kids already got their flu shots this year. I plan on stopping at Walgreens to get mine. Babies can't get the shot until they are six months. The first year the child get the shot it is broken into two. So you get one shot and then a month later go back for the second dose. After that you only need one shot every year.

My DH and I both got one last year in the midst of the flu "crisis", mainly because our babies were too young to get the shots. We haven't discussed whether or not they will get them this year but I am pretty sure that I'll be getting one and my DH will likely get one too.

No one I know has ever had trouble with the shots, but of course there are always stories out there.

But yes, they do have to be 6 months. I forgot about that. Since that isn't until Oct6 for you, I would probably just wait until your appt on the 13th and get it with the other shots unless you really just don't want to get all those shots together. Like I said before, there won't be any side effects, it just depends on how you feel about getting all those shots at once and getting one extra stick. If you don't do it then, do it as soon as you can for maximum protection. In my opinion (and others may disagree), the shot is MUCH less dangerous for little ones that age than getting the flu.

My daughters were preemies and they recieved the flu shot last year as soon as they turned 6 months. We've already had the girls vaccinated this year. I think the benefits def outweigh the risk. I really do not want to deal will two sick babies. Our girls recived thier flu shots last Friday and they were fine.

There shouldn't be any problem with getting the flu shot along with their 6 month shots. I was really worked up about getting my kids the H1N1 shot last year... agonizing over it and reading all the scary stories on the internet. Int eh end we got it because we were traveling during flu season and them getting the flu just wasn't an option. They did just fine with it, and I have since done a lot of research about vaccines and got a lot more comfortable with giving them. This year we'll be doing the flu shot again as my kids have reactive airways when they get sick, so we don't want to risk any complications with the flu. It is a hard choice though. Just keep in mind that what you read on the internet is not the experience of 99.999999% of people who get the shot.

I agree. I had the regular flu shot and the swine flu shot while pregnant and we'll all four be getting a shot this year, too.

Mine were born in November, so they didn't get one the first year, but they certainly have gotten them every year after that. The flu is really dangerous for young children. And although the shot itself might make you (or them) slightly sick, IMO it's well worth the risk. (Besides, my DDs have never had any reaction to the seasonal flu shot. The H1N1 shot last year gave them a stuffy nose for about 3 days -- or maybe they would have had one anyway.)

I would have gotten mine already except that I was sick for a month and the doctor told me to wait till I was well! So now I need to get in gear and do it.

My babies won't be old enough until February. I have never had one, but I also don't get sick very often. My doc offered one at my post-partum visit but I turned it down. I wanted to think about it, and I still might get it, but nor sure. Honestly, I'm nervous about side effects. I know most people don't have any but my father got a 24 hour flu after his shot and that worried me because we are a lot alike physically.

Flu shots I just never know what to do. I never got them. Not sure if my mom got them for me, but as far as I can remember-I never remember getting a flu shot. I didn't get one when I was pregnant with the boys, or after I had them either. I didn't get one, nor did they, the following year when they were 12 months old. We all got one last year-including Annabella, and my husband and the three kids were all really sick. So who knows!

The kids all have their appointments in two weeks for the flu shot.

Yes, my whole family will be getting the shot as soon as the preservative free ones are available and the boys are 6 months. The shot this year has 2 strains of influenza and the H1N1. You cannot get the flu from the shot as it is not a live virus but the flu mist does contain live virus so they don't recommend it for pregnant moms or small children. I am a nurse and have taken care of some very sick little kids that break your heart so I want to do anything to prevent mine from getting it (especially now that we have more kids, illnesses spread through our house like wildfire)!

Like a PP said, you cannot get the flu from the flu shot because it is not a live virus. I am planning to get my shot tomorrow. The boys had their first half 3 weeks ago and get the other half next week. I tend to get everything and stay sick for a very long time and I DO NOT want to get sick and also have two sick babies if there's anyway I can avoid it.

Flu shots all around for our family-my daughter has asthma and she got the flu last year and wound up in ICU for 3 days because of it-the pedi said if she were to get the H1N1 virus she would have a very low chance of surviving it...it's that serious. Children with asthma get very very sick from flu virus's.

Yes! Yes! I have personally seen children die from influenza and I have never seen one child get sick from a flu shot. The achy feeling that adults equate to the shot "giving them the flu" is just their body mounting an immune response. We notice it more than our kids do because for most of us its been a long time since we got vaccines. Personally, I felt worse after my tetanus than I did after my flu shot.

I've always gotten mine the flu shot. Mine don't have a big reaction to vaccines though, the only reaction they've ever had is crying about the needle.
