Changing Pacifiers

My girls are seven months old now, and I'm sure they're way past the age that the Soothies are appropriate. I've tried some different pacifiers, and Dani is taking to the Playtex Binky, but she still wants her Soothie at bed time. Lillie won't take anything but her Soothie.

How do I transition to a new pacifier?

I'm wondering why you feel you need to change? My nephew who is 16 months still uses the soothies at night - that is the ONLY thing he will take. We switched to another kind at about 3 months so that we could get different colors to tell them apart and because I felt they dropped the soothies way more than they would another shape (which turned out to be true).

We never really changed pacifiers, just went up a size within the same brand/design. I would look around and try to find the pacifier that is most similar in shape and material to the soothies they are using now.

I do agree with pp though, if you don't have a reason to change (eg they keep dropping the pacis because the teat is too small) I would just let them keep the ones they are happy with.

My boys still use the soothies at 8 months. I tried to transition to the others and they didn't like them. I have a ton that I got as gifts and don't know what to do with them! I now heard that the soothies might be better because they don't affect the teeth as much... but not sure if that is true.

We tried to switch to avent pacifiers around 3 months. They didn't like those. And we stopped giving them pacifiers. They have been fine with it since then.

Soothies come in different sizes too for older babies. Our BRU has them. I like the Soothies cause they are one piece so they cannot come apart and be a choking hazard--well, only relevant for the one time a week my kiddos use them :)

I wanted to change because the girls like throwing them, and the Soothie clips are too big for their faces. I didn't know there were Soothies made for older kids; I'll definitely look for those! Do they come in different colors?

Yes - we have the next stage Soothies in pink (the first stage was kind of a blue-green). We still use the first stage ones because the Wubbanubs only come with the first stage soothers and my girls still like to use those when they go to sleep. BTW - my girls went through a soother throwing stage - they have also kind of started up again, but not throwing them so much as dropping them over the side of the crib. Fun times!!

Yup - pink and blue. I think the green is only stage 1. We have all three colors - since we lost all our soothies at one point and the store only had the pink ones. We also freeze them, the boys love a nice cold binkie sometimes :)

That's good to know. Right now, the girls have pink and purple stage 1. I was hoping they would have pink and purple for stage 2, but I guess one of them can have blue. :)

Jess, my girls use the Wubbanubs too! and Dani is absolutely in love with hers; she must have it when she sleeps.

They make purple for bitty preemies, they have a cut out of one side for nose tubes and such to fit. Kepler got one once.

My girls will only take the soothies too. We have pink, purple and some of the green ones. I have tons of other paci's but every time I try I get the "gross" face from them. I use a paci holder that I got from BRU that has a little band that wraps through the hole so I don't have to use those big clips that are made for the soothies. Seems to work ok for us.

I just switched to Avent paci's after finding one of my boys had stuffed the entire soothie in his mouth and I had to pull it out. I didn't like that it was that flexible. Luckily they don't use them except at night when falling asleep or if their gums are hurting. They didn't even notice. They actually play with them like toys.
