When the girls had their 3 year checkup I asked about ditching the nighttime pullups. The pedi didn't seem concerned at all and said it's developmental and we need to wait until she's waking up dry. I trust him so I waited. Nothing has changed in a year. So a couple of weeks ago I pull the last stack of pullups out of the box. There are 23. Do I want to try it? Thinking out loud I calculated that it would bring us to the first day of preschool as being night #1 pullup free. :nea: Heck no I wasn't going to do that! So I figured I would buy about 30, talk to the pedi at their 4 year checkup and see what he has to say.

Tonight I go to get their stuff out for bed...no pullups. OH %$^*!!!! I completely forgot to get some today. Hubby works 2nd shift so I'm home alone. And they had preschool today so I cannot possibly drag them out (in a bad thunderstorm!!) to get pullups right now. So what do I do? Give her a speech about getting up to go pee. Then I pile extra blankets, sheets, jammies, and undies in the hallway to use through the night.

Am I completely out of my head thinking I might pull this off? :escape:

Yikes! Have any old diapers laying around? Or a neighbor with a child close in age?

I'd definitely pile on the blankets, etc. Do you have a mattress protector on her bed? I know with our oldest DS, it wouldn't matter how much we talked to him and prepped him for not peeing through the night, it wouldn't matter. He just doesn't wake up when he has to pee. :pardon: Maybe plan on waking her up to pee once or twice during the night?

Good luck!!! I hope it is successful!! :)

Have faith!! Anthony would wake most mornings soaked- pajamas and sheets. So when we did potty training, I went straight to underwear. The first few days they were wet, but they've been dry since. I would say it was only a week, if not less. I got waterproof mattress covers for their beds and used the waterproof pads from the hospital. Wasn't as bad as I thought.

I would wake her about an hour or so after going to sleep. Or when you go to bed. But most accidents happen right when they wake up, so you could wake them before they usually do. But with school, you might not want to. Good luck!!

I ran out of Pull Ups a couple weeks ago while we were visiting DH's parents house. I had already had a couple beers, so there was no way I was driving anywhere. I just went for it, and we unintentionally dove into night time potty training. Amazingly enough they BOTH woke up dry the next morning! :shok: We haven't looked back since. :pardon: I think it worked out good that none of us had enough time to stress about it, we just did it! :good:

    Good Luck!!!

    Thanks ladies!!

We do have a waterproof mattress pad and underneath that is a plastic mattress cover, so it's fully protected. :good: I'll definitely take her for a pee break before I go to bed. :good:

I say go for it. I did the 3 day potty training thing with my son over Labor Day weekend and I just have mattress protector, 2 of the chux sheets (those blue absorbant pads) and a towel on top of his bed. I would say he is getting better at waking up dry but not yet consistent. Good luck!

Lots of good advice already! Good luck, I hope it is an easier night than you think. Let us know how it goes.

hope it goes well!!!! what we've found really helps with them staying dry is just limiting liquids the couple of hours before bedtime... but I say go for it...

She's not a huge drinker as it is, but we do dinner around 5:30 and then they are in bed at 7, so I can only limit it so much. :good:

She hasn't woken up yet, and I'm afraid to go in there. :escape:

it is risky to wake... my ds will go back to sleep easier than my dd... I don't relish waking her! good luck!

Oooh boy, both times I went in to take her she was already wet. :( She was laying there awake. Poor thing. I want to try and continue with it, but we'll see.

Michelle, remember, you cannot train a child to do something while they are asleep. I would just go back to the pull ups until she is ready. It really isn't worth the night time changes (child and bed). Marcus potty trained first, but while Jon was completely diaper/pull up free the day he finished potty training, it took Marc a full year and a half to stay dry at night (he finally did it a month before his 5th birthday).

Michelle, I wouldn't stress over it. Meghan started going without the pull up this summer and Nolan still needs to wear one.

Michelle, I wouldn't stress about it too much. When her body is ready to hold it all night, she will. Lennon was just shy of 6 when he started waking up dry and not really needing a pull-up. (We are back to pull-ups now b/c of how much fluids he is drinking, though) Every doctor I've talked to, article/book I've read, says that you can't force night potty training - it will happen when the bladder/brain are ready.

Jayden is STILL in a night time pull-up. Our pedi said he just isn't ready. She said it can actually be a chemical thing and until it kicks in .. no amount of training will help.

Good luck .. and don't stress about it !

My oldest DS is the same age as your twin boys (he was born on 7/14, but his due date was 7/26!) - he went for a few weeks of being dry right before he turned 6 - then we had to add a lot of liquid to his diet to supplement - and he's still in night time pull-ups too. He just sleeps all night, he never wakes to pee - and our doctor said the same thing. :)

 Sorry she woke up wet. I agree, don't stress it.

I did not take away the pull ups for my two until they were waking up dry for awhile. Emilie had been getting up in the middle of the night to go potty even with a pull up on so I know she was ready. Trevor has woken up 2 times since being in underwear at night to go the bathroom. Trevor had a few accidents and I put him back in pull ups for a bit until I thought he was ready again. It was not fun to change the sheets and his pajamas in the middle of the night.

But I agree with Sharon, night time dryness is not something that they can be trained for, they are either ready or not. It's not a bad thing to keep them in pull ups longer at night.

I agree with the others, don't stress it. You'll only get frustrated with all the jammy & sheets changes through all this AND you'll possibly frustrate her as well. Not worth it for either of you.

not to be redundant - Abby night/day trained at the same time....Ian is still in a night time pull up - he only pees in it maybe once a week but for some reason he seems to wet when he doesn't wear it - the good news is that at this age with no pee in the morning I re-use them the next night - stretches them twice as long!

I'm throwing in the towel. The image of her laying in her bed this morning wide awake and soaking wet when I went at 5:30 just ate at me at work this morning. She wasn't upset or anything, just seemed to be waiting for me. I don't think she totally understood that she could have left her room to come and get me. So, who knows how long she was laying there?!?!?! :( Totally not worth it. :nea: She still wakes up SOAKED so clearly she's not ready.

THANK YOU everyone for all you shared. I really appreciate it!!!! :grouphug:

 Michelle, because I can imagine exactly how much it upset you to have her laying there awake & wet. Everyone else has already said what I was going to say. Unfortunately, they have no control of their bodies when they are asleep, so you really can't train them. Since she is waking so wet every day, I agree that you are definitely doing the right thing by just keeping her in pullups.
