    Hi everyone,

My twins just started a daycare centre for the first time and we've been asked to prepare an emergency kit which includes a letter from home for them to read in case of an emergency. I understand that this is pretty standard these days but I am unsure what to write. My girls are 3.5 and can only recognize names, so they would be getting the letters read to them. Also, I think they need one each.

    Advice please!

I have never heard of this before. What kind of emergency would it be for?

me either and I work at a preschool. What kind of letter and what's in the emergency kit besides an extra pair of clothes in case they have an accident?

Maybe a letter stating that they can be treated in an emergency situation allowing the daycare worker/teacher to go with them to the hospital?

Maybe. That is typically done through a standard form that parents must sign.

I think this is primarily in case of a natural disaster like an earthquake (we live near Vancouver, BC so we are on a fault line). In our emergency kit we need a bottle of water, a granola bar, a small pocket toy, and a letter possibly with a family photo). I've heard of this before - maybe it is a local thing at daycares / preschools and elementary schools around here but I've never written one and I've never seen one so I'm not really sure what to put.

ETA: we did have to fill out a standard emergency info card, this is specifically a calming letter for the kids.

It must be because of living on a fault line. I have no idea what I'd write. Probably be sure to include full proper names of parents, siblings and relatives as younger children may not know this. Also maybe some phone numbers for those people. I guess you would just tel them how much you love them, are proud of them, and will see them soon?

Glad I'm not the only one! Sorry, didn't realize this was so uncommon.

Yeah never heard of this either. I would ask for an example from the day care.

Must be a BC thing I'm an ECE in Ontario and have never heard of it. We have class emergency kits (water, granola bars, paper, crayons) but not individual things. What are they stored in? (our classroom ones are just in a backpack by the room door)

I would suggest writing that you will see them as soon as possible and remind them that the grown ups they are will will work very hard to keep them safe until they can see you again.

I think this would be a good thing to write. I would probably also ask the daycare what they suggest you put in.

You can add me to the list of people who've never heard of it before too.

All of that sounds like it should be on the emergency contact lists.
is it a letter to comfort the child to know that even when you are not there that they shouldn't be scared and comforting words?

I had to write a letter for my boys this year (they are in 1st grade). This year the school asked the kids to bring an emergency kit that contained a certain amount of drinks and food, along with a family picture and an encouraging note/letter all in a gallon size zip lock bag. This note/letter is supposed to be something for the kids to read and know that you care, etc. We live a few blocks from the school so I pretty much said we would be their soon and that we loved them. It was kind of strange to write. We do live in California and have some active fault lines around here.
