So --- i have found that i dont have time to get to the gym - and i am always trying to figure out when i could fit it into the schedule of our 8 month twins. Our gym has babysitting from 9 - 11am daily or 6 - 9 pm monday & wed- or my husband is home after 930 pm. any thoughts / ideas would be great!
I have been going to the gym since mine were around 7 months old. Our childwatch has longer hours than that though. We have childwatch from 8-1 and then again sometime in the afternoon, but I always went during the 8-1 time. Mine were on two naps up until the past couple of weeks, so I went as soon as they were up from their morning nap and then they pretty much had lunch and another nap when we got back. Mine napped from 8:30 until around 10, so if childwatch was from 9 to 11, I think I would have had a hard time as well (my gym is about 30 mins away). When do yours nap??
I probably wouldn't take them late in the day, the 6-9 window, but mine go to sleep early. Add to that bath, nighttime bottles and bed, it wouldn't work. I think I would go in the morning, like the previous poster said, around nap schedules. Honestly? I don't have time or make time for the gym. I work full time, home at 3, only with kids until 630 when they go to bed. I could work out after they go to bed, but my DH isn't always home, and that is the time to clean the house, get ready for the next day and oh try to relax a bit. I wish I had the drive/time to. Hopefully someday.
I don't have the time/budget to go to the gym so I work out at home. I pop in a video during their morning nap and I can usually finish that (about an hour) and have a shower before they wake up. Then I walk 5-6km in the evening with them. I also do weight training and circuits a couple times a week, either with a video or from a routine I got from a magazine (Oxygen, Shape). I also started a learn to run clinic at my local running shop, and I can run either with the babies or after my husband gets home from work. I just started working out again in earnest about a month and a half ago and so far this routine is working great! It will be a little tougher when I go back to work in January though. I will probably start working out before I go to work. Sundays are active rest days so I usually just take a long leisurely walk with my hubby and the babies and do some stretching/yoga. But if your gym has babysitting hours I would definitely take advantage of those - especially in the morning. I am just a morning person and prefer to workout earlier in the day.
My DH and I worked out a schedule for when we could go to the gym. Our gym does have pretty reasonable babysitting hours but we have to pay extra for it and we don't have the extra money. On days when I cannot make the gym, I do a workout on TV, our cable provider has workouts on demand and I usually do one when the kids are napping or after they go to bed for the night.
right now my schedule is completely non compatible with the gym schedule. Mine nap from 830 - 10 am, and then from 12 30 - 2 pm. They start the bedtime routine around 630, and are in bed for 730. It seems like i might have to wait until i go back to work so that i can go to the gym during my lunch. :headbang: Right now i do work out a little at homee (read ...... i do jump squats with them while they are in the Jolly jumper! - Its pretty funny) but i would like to get the social and physical aspect that comes with the gym again.
Deyra, I think our kids are on virtually the same schedule. They sleep for about an hour at 8:30 am, again around 11:30-12:00 usually an hour and a half) and then another cat nap around 4pm. Between feedings and a little playtime it's hard to fit anything in. I really want to get back to working out. I was in such great shape before the babes and now I have about 15lbs I would love to lose (mostly my belly and would love to lose a boob size too... I know that sounds crazy but holy moly having babes does something to your boobs :headbang: ) anyhow, the only thing i've figured out is getting someone to watch the babes so I can go for a swim and a run, it's happened twice in the last three weeks, so i'm working on getting something going a little more regularly
I'm starting the C25k running program. I figure it takes less time then going all the way to the gym, and I can run with the babies. I hate running, but c2k5 makes it easy even for a total non-runner (I was about half way through when I got prego with the twins).
Hey there. I was having the same issue as you. I caved in and bought a treadmill and some exercise equipment. It was a bit to fork out up front, about $1800. But, my monthly gym membership with the cost of child care at the gym would be $80 a month...which is a great bargin..however, it still doesn't fix the issue of trying to get there inbtwn nap and feeding times. So, the home gym made sense to me. I work out for 1 hour or so during their afernoon nap. I figure that as long as they are little, say for the next several years, getting to the gym is just going to be a struggle, unless I'm willing to go at 5am, which I'm not. I won't join back at the gym for at least the next year or so...the home gym will def. make it work the cost. I know this solution does nothing for social interaction...but it def. is helping me feel like I'm doing something to exercise. I'm using it regularly..now just have to lose the weight (see my post from today )
I work out at home a few times a week on the days that I am home (I work 3 1/2 days a week). I have a treadmill and an elliptical machine and I will typically hop on one of those while the babies are napping (they are 11 months old). Then I do a few free weights and stomach crunches and then hop in the shower...I have just enough time to do all this during nap time...don't know what I will do when they drop their morning nap...i hate waiting til the afternoon to work out...I like to get it over with in the morning while I still am motivated..by the afternoon I don't feel like it!!
I still have not worked out how to go to the gym, especially since going back to work. However, I take a long walk with the babies in the stroller every day. As we live in a hilly area and I walk briskly that has brought me back into shape quite well. At least I feel fit if not as toned as before the pregnancy. When they were the age your babies are now they loved the walks for naps, and slept much better than in bed. If the childcare hours in the gym don't work well for you how about trying what one of my friends with twins did: She took the babies with her to the gym and left them in their car seats and positioned them right in front of her while working out - her babies enjoyed the "strange things" their mom was doing, kicked right along slightly rocking their car seats and thus often rocking themselves to sleep. If they did not go to slepp, it was a short workout but better than nothing. Of course this depends on the equipment you want to use, the layout and noise level of the gym etc., but it might be worth a try.
My wife and I had been planning on buying a new house last year, which was delayed until after the girls were born. After a few months of not being able to get any gym routine, we decided to add an extra BR to the search and make it a home gym, and it has been a great idea. Very nice to be able to get in a quick workout when they nap, or after they go to bed, and not have to spend 20-30 mins driving to do so. I would definitely recommend if you can do so.
I like the home workout too. I do Jillian Michael's 30 Day Shred (fast but so good) or Turbo Jam DVDs... saves so much time from going to the gym although I occasionally miss it.
On days when I know I can nap (ie. not going anywhere), I go at 5am. I love getting it done in the am and not having to bring kids. Our childcare is only for walkers and older so I either have them in the stroller during a class or go on my own. I look forward to when they are old enough for the jogger and then we'll be doing that daily! I like working out at home too but just use the gym to swim.
