I tried to get a pic of the twins together yesterday...mission impossible

I took them to the mall, fed and well napped and hoped for a good 1 year picture...icture this...Gavin sitting there crying because he was scared and wanted me...Jocelyn taking off walking/crawling every chance she was put down, we chase after her, she goes faster...we put her back, Gavin's still crying...repeat...repeat, repeat - it was exhausting! I was sweating and getting flustered.

No go on the pic together...so much for the matching outfits I was obsessive about getting.

We did get one picture of each of them individually. That's better than nothing, but still wanted one of them together...wishful thinking.

Photo sessions are a booger at this age. Glad you were at least able to get the individuals. We used a photographer that did outdoor pictures for the 1 year pictures. It was tricky, but he had some really good props, a bench that they stood on, looking over the back of it, a fence that they stood against, a donkey(that was behind the fence but fascinating for them), big rocks that they sat on (that one didn't work as well). He took a million pictures so we had plenty to choose from.

:( I wonder if they were just overwhelmed being at such a new place?? I would bring out your camera at home when hubby and ally are there to help, lay a sheet or blanket across your couch or hanging down in front of your couch, plop the two little ones down and start snapping away! I bet you'll get a fantastic and adorable picture in their matching outfits at home!

Outside on a bench will be prettier, you won't need flash. Ideally you get them in the shade (so no squinting), but facing the sun (so their eyes sparkle). A prop that they either sit on, or stand in (like a nice deep bucket--something cute!) will keep them still for a few minutes. The single BEST thing you can do is have someone behind you (perhaps Daddy, or a beloved older sibling) goofing around and being silly. They will look at your assistant and giggle and you will get pictures of both of them smiling. I have my boys be silly all the time when I want pics of my girls together. Mine are 7 and understand perfectly well what I want, but that doesn't mean they want to cooperate. They can't resist laughing at their goofy brothers, though. ;) Here is an example. In the shade (full shade, no patches of light in weird places from sun going through leaves), but facing the sun so their eyes sparkle, and laughing at one of their brothers. I don't need a bucket or something to keep them from crawling away any more, but an assistant is absolutely invaluable for getting both to smile at the same time. If your camera has burst mode, use that. (Unless you have a DSLR, shutter lag isn't as much of a problem with DSLRs.)

your camera speak is making me drool!

to the OP - i'm sorry the pics didn't turn out how you wanted (although, when you get them, we'd love to see the individual pics you did get!). photos with one toddler are tough - trying to coordinate two = :faint:

i used to take pics every month of the girls with one of their teddy bears through the first year so we could look back & see how they grew. this is what i got at 11 months.

    That's priceless!!

Rubyturquoise, your picture is great! Thanks for the tips! We bought a DSLR because I like candid shots more than professional photographs, so we haven't taken the boys to the photographer since they were 5 months old. I'm going to take your suggestions and try to get some more "structured" photos of the boys. :good:

Marlena, I'm sorry you couldn't get pics of your LOs together, but I agree that I'd love to see the individual ones. :)

Rachel and Ruby  your pictures!

Marlena-I am sorry that picture day did not go as planned...this is a tough age to catch the kids together on camera. I always say getting a picture of the two of mine together is like capturing Bigfoot...mythical and rare. I would love to see the individual pictures too!

    Rachel, that picture is hilarious!

Yeah, babies... they just don't get the whole photo thing. We had family photos done in July with our wedding photographer at the park near our house. Miles had a meltdown over soothers, Austin wouldn't look at the camera.. we don't have the results yet, but I am pretty sure it's going to be a pretty thin book!

LOL. That's one of the reasons why we haven't made it for our 1 year pics even though they turned 1 in June!!!

I've been taking my girls to the same photographer (she does it out of her home) since they were 4 months. It's gotten increasingly more difficult to get perfectly posed photos... I so wanted Easter ones of them in their pretty dresses, sitting there smiling at the camera. Well, I got some good ones, but didn't get the one I wanted. And they were 11 months then too! :)

Oh my goodness that picture is hilarious!

We also had a photographer come to our house... well we went to a park in town. The boys were SOOOO grumpy, and they're usually happy go lucky! I thought she maybe would have gotten 1 or 2 good shots... nope she got at least 50, I'm having a really hard time choosing! Maybe try that, sure it's more expensive but you get what you pay for!

it is hard to get individual pictures AND twin pictures! good luck to everyone!

LOVE that 11 mo. one of the teddy bear and babies feet!

to the OP I would try again, don't get defeated, sometimes it's just the wrong time of day or the wrong day!

And to Ruby, I LOVE your pictures on your flickr!!!! I am in the midst of having to get another DSLR b/c mine won't auto focus anymore, and I'm anxious to start taking pictures again. I love the reminder for the shaded, filtered lighting and keeping a focal point. Mine have done well standing hear a tree and looking at it, or with at least one of them seated in a little chair or a bench. and yes, having a some type of prop to keep them close is good too!

At 11 mo. we did the JCPenney studio pictures and did their bathtub w/the kids in their diapers and with their towels wrapped around them. The really turned out adorable. Though you don't get to show off their cute matching outfits, but I'm really glad I got "bathtime" related pictures!

After 1 yr, I slowed down to pictures every 6 months, and its still a nice progression of their ages, but mainly b/c it is just very hard to keep two little toddlers in the same frame!
