Hey! I am new to posting, but have been reading the forum for several months. I am due in October with twins and am really considering using cloth diapers. Any thoughts or suggestions?

I am planning on using them as well but not for the first month- I want to give myself time to get used to everything else. I also don't plan on using them at night as I believe they will stay drier and therefore sleep better in disposables. I bought a stash of rumparooz- ones I thought looked the best and also got great reviews. I look forward to the savings and to helping the environment a little as well.

i have used cloth with all my babies! I recommend starting with cloth AFTER the babies poop out all their meconium. There are a lot of routes to go via cloth. do you like to do laundry or would you prefer a diaper service to come collect and wash the diapers? I have a mixture of prefolds, fitteds, pockets, and all-in-ones because i like variety and its hard to predict what will work best for each baby.

I used pre-folds with Lauralynn and they worked well for us. The weather is usually hot here so they usually dry up within a day. We rinse the diapers off poop before dumping them into the washing machine. We don't have a diaper service here (I think). I agree with annti on using disposables at night as they're more likely to sleep better. We stopped around 4-5 months when she required fewer diaper changes through the day and went to disposables.

Though I am not sure if I'm able to keep up with the laundry with twins this time. :blbl:

cloth is an awesome option! :good:

we used this diaper trial to try out our options. we used a local diaper service till the girls were around 6 months old, and then we switched to our own diapers. that worked well for us. we use all prefolds + covers. we used prefolds with hemp liners at night until about 4 months ago. then we switched to disposable at night because the girls were waking up around 5:00am from cold, wet bums.

i think i'm going to talk DH into getting a diaper sprayer (we're hoping to have another baby) as i'm really tired of the dunk & swish method of getting the poop off the diapers. :bad: it works fine, i'm just lazy.

Welcome!! And congrats on the twins! They are such a blessing!

We've used cloth with both of our sets and it works great. We did use disposables for the first few weeks with the boys until they grew into them (and with the girls we started CDing when they were a year old but only because we didn't know much about it until then.)

We use 95% cloth (prefolds, flats and fitteds) and we love it. Not only do we save a TON of money by using them, but our boys seem to do better with them. The sposies gave them rashes. If you're just starting to look into them, Flips are a great way to go since they also have disposable inserts (kind of like gdiapers, but better IMO).

    Welcome and Congrats!
We are gonna try to cloth diaper these two when they come. We've got a nice little stash of prefolds and covers, Fitteds and some all-in-ones (cause my hubby thought those would be the easiest  for him). A good site for cloth diapering is diaperswappers lots of good info there.
Glad to see I'm not the only one considering cloth diapering :FIFblush: .

    Congrats!

We have a diaper service- we have an apartment and I was too nervous to tackle twin infants + all the laundry with cloth. I think I could have managed it fairly well starting at 7 months, but let's just keep that our little secret  . I like that I do not have to rinse anything out, other than if the wraps get poop on them. This happens like once a month. We bought used wraps in good condition on Craigslist- our favorite are Thirsties. We also use Snappis to secure the diapers instead of pins.

    Best of luck!

The diaper sprayer is great & saves a lot of time. Was great for DH who thought baby poop was icky. and good luck with getting another baby!

I forgot to add that we used liners with each pre-fold so if there was any poop most of it would be caught in the liner which can be thrown away. If there isn't any poop you could give the liner a quick rinse and reuse it. But we took the easier (and lazier way out). :FIFblush:

We're also going the cloth diaper route....prefolds with Thirsties covers and hemp inserts at night. We registered at http://motheringgrace.com

Anybody use the dry pail method rather than dunking and swooshing? How's that work for you?

we use a dry pail for most of their diapers. this is so embarrassing but for dirty diapers, i just pile them on the floor in the bathroom. then just before i start a load of diapers, i dunk them all in the toilet & scrap off the dry poop (i have rubber gloves i use) & add them to the pail to go down to the washer.

We CD also and absolutely love it! My guys were too small when they came home from the hospital, so we finally got them into them at about a month old and they haven't had a disposable diaper on their bums since  . We have pre-folds and AIOs. Now that they're squirmy, we mostly use the AIOs so we can get them on quicker. We also use all one size from Fuzzi Bunz and Bum Genius; so no buying more when they get bigger, you just re-size them. So far, that has worked great! I also second the diaper sprayer; if you're going to CD for the majority of the time, it's well worth it. We just keep a bucket by the toilet and throw the dirty ones in there after we spray them out. The just wet ones go in the wet bag. Then we have small wet bags that stay in our diaper bag for out and about. We even CD on our vacation this summer and it was no big deal at all (but I missed my diaper sprayer!!).
We don't have a service, just wash them ourselves and it's really no big deal. During the summer, I dry them outside to save energy and get a good sun bleaching.
As far as nighttime, we just double up the inserts. We put in the regular insert and then add a hemp insert and our guys stay nice and dry all night.

    Good luck!
    Laura

we just dry pail here. BF baby poop washes right out so we don't have to dunk or anything. Once they are solid you just have to shake them out over the toilet and throw them in a wetbag. :)

We use fuzzi bunz and LOVE them for our 3 month olds. They keep their bottoms so dry, even for the night time that we've never had any rashes. When they were in disposables at the special care nursery for 2 weeks after birth the boys did get rashes. I'm totally sold on fuzzi bunz. We have even taken them on sailing vacations twice this summer, we just had to stop at laundromats every other day.

We started using cloth on our boys around.. 9 months old (6 months adjusted). I had considered it before they were born and then got caught up in delivering them at 29 weeks and a 2 month NICU stay.

We use the Bumgenius 3.0's and love them! My husband and I both think they are sooooo much better and easier to use than a disposable. I WOULD use them at night. I strongly believe that they will feel drier in the cloth at night. Since switching we've gone to using disposables for the past 6 weeks due to a move and living out of relatives/hotels and they are disgusting. My boys constantly soak through their disposables and soak their jammies. The few times I've thrown cloth back in the mix, I've never had the problem. We have 24 and I only do laundry every other day. I try to start the laundry about 2 hours before I want to head to bed myself so that I can have them in the dryer before I go to bed and they're good to go in the morning.

We LOVE our diaper sprayer! My husband would of never gone for cloth diapering w/o it. We have a diaper champ with a wet bag inside of it in their room next to the changing table. Then another diaper champ in the bathroom w/ a wet bag inside of it for the poopy ones we spray out. I got both of the diaper champs on craigslists for super cheap!

There's tons of cloth diapering options though!

All this talk about CD is tempting me to go the green way again! It's summer all year round over here so I guess I shouldn't have a problem with drying.

Anyone has comments regarding the AIO & AI2?

I started using Motherease cloth diapers when my boys were 5 months. They are really good and they wash really well. I use the one size diapers which are good from birth until about 35lbs. I will have to buy some new covers soon, but I'm glad I won't have to replace the diapers.

i am currently cloth diapering both my littles (though ANY DAY NOW my son can potty train, cough *AHEM*, coughhh) and plan to cd from the beginning w/ the twins. you can start right away assuming they are big enough, meconium washes right out of cloth diapers...

i use fitteds and interlock wool covers...we use a dry pail system and i wash every other day pretty much. with the twins, i plan on using a combination of prefolds and fitteds while they're tiny and then most likely fitteds full time unless i fall in love with pf's...

i second the comment about diaperswappers...GREAT site full of information and rad deals on used and new dipes.

Welcome, and congrats on your twins!

I am also expecting twins, and have no experience with cloth diapers (yet!), I just wanted to say how encouraging it is to hear from so many twin mamas who cloth diaper! Whenever it comes up for me, people act like I am insane and immediately try to talk me out of it saying that I won't be able to manage it with two babies. You are all an inspiration!

i still get that reaction & we've been doing it for over two years! i don't know - i guess every time i feel fed up with rinsing out poopy diapers in the toilet, i just think about how much disposables cost & suddenly it doesn't seem so bad. ;)

We use Fuzzi Bunz primarily, with a few Flips mixed in. We started when the boys were just about 13 months due to skin issues. I really don't think it's that big of a hassle. It probably takes an extra 20 minutes of your time when you wash (I wash every day, only because I didn't want to buy so many!), but that 20 minutes is spread out.

We swithed to cloth with my son once he turned 1 yr and I wished I had done it sooner. We went the dry pail route(Whammies bag and trash can with latching lid) with the sprayer and flushable liners and it was so nice and easy. Washing them at home was never an issue for us. I was originally thinking I could not do cloth with twins but maybe I can :)

Those of you that already cloth your twins how many diapers do you have total? I am trying to figure out how many more we will need if we are going to cloth these girls :)

I have been cd'ing (cloth diapering) for 4 1/2 yrs. My oldest of course is potty trained (thank heavens!!) but I am still cd'ing my 20mos olds.

As for quantity? I would say 15 diapers per baby. Maybe more especially in the first few months where they are pooing and peeing at every feeding. You won't need as many covers as that if you choose to go the prefold/fitted route. Maybe 5-6 covers per baby. You just rotate through the day the covers you use.

You also asked what a dry pail is. Its a pail with a waterproof liner and all you do is drop the diaper in there till wash day and then toss the diapers right in the washer and wash. No yucky water/bleach (bleach is bad for diapers). If you exclusively breastfeed, there is no need to clean off the poo, it will dissolve right in the washer. When you transition to table/solid food, you will need to dispose of the poo into the toilet. You can do this via a diaper sprayer (Cotton Babies sell them) or sometimes you can just plop the poo right in the toilet. I use an old stiff spatula to scrape off the poo and it works great for me. I just wipe it off on a clean part of the diaper and it goes right into a ziplock bag away from the kids. Or you could dunk and swish but you would want a bucket or the pail right there to put the diaper in.

When you wash, you could do a quick rinse before washing. This helps wash off any extra stuff that you couldn't get into the toilet then you wash as usual.

Have you decided what type of diaper to go with? Like I said, I have been doing this for 4 1/2 yrs, bought many types and have a friend who owns a diaper site and have lots of experience selling. PM me if you would like!

I have not quite decided what to use for cloth diapers. I was thinking about going with something like Fuzzibunz one size or something similar. A family member sent me a ton of prefolds, but honestly I am a little intimidated by those and not sure if they would be quite as absorbant as the others.

I used Bum Genius pocket AIO and was super happy with them. I will probably just order more of those when the time comes. I had a friend that used fuzzibunz and was happy with those.

    Good luck!

i have 42 pre-folds and rotate between 4 covers between both girls. i usually try to do a load of diapers every other day, but if i get busy or am unable to, we have enough diapers to go 3.5 - 4 days without washing.

We use the One-Size FuzziBunz (All in one Pocket diapers) I have 25 of them and I do laundry every other day. We started when the girls were 9mo because we had enough disposies to last us that long from baby showers! I find they tend to leak since my girls seem to be heavy wetters, but if I keep them changed every 2 hours or so, they're good. I have a large diaper pail wet-bag that I just invert the dirty diapers into the washer and then just throw the wetbag into the washer too. It's easy. I have been soaking them after a prewash, as we've been getting a funky smell when they get wet. I would encourage cloth diapers (we use cloth wipes and a homemade spray too)

Don't be embarrassed because I do something similar. I use BumGenius diapers and I have wrapped them like a disposable before (where you kinda roll it over and make it a ball) and thrown it in the pail. Then before I wash I have to dispose of the poo. Usually I will just dump it into the little can (with a bad of course) in our laundry room and just toss it to the trash after I load the washer. But I only usually do that when I know I am going to wash the same day.

We use a dry pail. I used a wet pail one time and it was so disgusting I never did it again. I only dunk and flush poop diapers. I never rinse urine diapers. I only make sure the majority of the poop comes off in the toliet. I don't scrap or dunk. I will just shake off what I can and throw it in the pail.
