my LOs seem to dangle the sippies off of the high chairs and then when they let go, one freaks out! he will scream and whine and not eat a thing until i put it back on his tray. i've tried to teach him, "NO" but he gets so upset i really dont want to deal with whining, etc. LOL

would giving them sippies without handles keep them from tossing them off you think?

Mine do this too and I think they like to see my reaction. Now if they are going to drop it, I take if off the tray and set it aside. When they give me the sign for milk, I give it back to them, and then take it away again after they are done drinking so they don't send them sailing across the room. They do it with both kinds of sippies - with or without handles!

Mine are 21 months and still throw their sippies. I've been trying to teach when they are done to hand it to mommy or put it back on the table and they do this mostly, but they still throw it half of the time. I've never used sippies with handles, so that didn't make a difference for mine.

i agree with PPs - they would throw them regardless. they're learning about gravity! ;)

we had a one toss is okay rule - so they got to toss it once & we would give it back, if they tossed it again, it got put away. over time they figured it out.

It's definitely not the handles. My guys have always loved throwing sippies, and still do. <_< In fact, they both threw their milk sippies at breakfast this morning! :gah: I can't wait for this phase to be over...

Then they just leave them everywhere. I'm finding them in the couch, the toybox, on top of the dog crates. :)

Handles won't matter. At this age it's fun to do. It's fun to watch things fall to the ground and it's very fun to see Mommy and Daddy's reaction. It was a phase that my two had to get out of. I would say between 18-20 months it lost it's allure. In the meantime, I had no reaction when they threw them down and I instituted a rule that after three drops, the sippy got taken away. My DH and I also showed them that sippies belong on tables or in the fridge and not on the floor.

My DD does it a 1000 times a day too :headbang: ... I think though the best thing is to just totally ignore it, pick it up and give it back to them if they want it. Try not to say a word or make any facial expression because it seems they keep doing it more if they get a reaction. This of course is just a theory because my DD is still doing it and i've been employing this method for awhile now ;) . But my DS has quit for the most part so that's good. Anyhow, just another lovely phase that seems to last forever.

My two girls do this all the time as well as throw food. They're 20 months corrected and no where near stopping and it is driving me cuckoo. I often yell there are starving children in this world! Which has no impact. Go figure.

Yep, it's definitely not the handles. Kids have a non-discrimination policy when it comes to throwing. Everything is fair game. Essentially, it's the experimentation and fun of throwing. We've had sippies with and without handles, and both types were thrown. Be glad it's just a sippy. One of my boys pushed a dining room table chair down a flight of stairs into the basement, for fun.

    Ditto.

    and Ditto.

Toss it once, you get it back. Toss it again, and it goes in the fridge until you are finished eating.
