Well, it's happened. I can't avoid putting them in big boy beds any longer. I am now looking for sheets. They have had absolutely no theme in their room to date (actually it was my old bedroom and pretty much stayed the same) so I would like to make it a real kids room but not one that they will think is babyish in 3 years (the boys are 3 now). Their interests are (in order):

    1. Firetrucks
    2. construction vehicles
    3. Race cars

    4. fish/underwater
    5. Winnie the Pooh

    6. trains
    7. pirates

I was hoping to avoid merchandising like "Cars" or "Thomas" if I can help it. Their bedroom will only have their beds and dresser but I'd like to paint a mural on the wall. Does anybody have a sense of when they might think something is too "baby" for them. Do any of these themes seem like they'd get too baby quicker. How long do kids keep their fascination with firetrucks and trains and such (or how long did your kids).
    Thanks For the info.

Right now, Kiefer has cars and trucks as his theme and Cameron has wild animals. We got them quilts so they will last longer and not look too kiddy-ish. When they get old enough to know what they like, I'll consider changing the themes, but the quilts are nice enough to use around the house as throw blankets on cold nights. I am painting the rooms colors that can be reused for other themes, or at least nothing too obnoxious. We will decorate the walls with decals that can be removed and pictures and soft art. That way, when we do change the room around, it won't be too hard to do.

I don't know when they'll want to change it, but I'm thinking around 5 years old is an age they may start to really want something different or they may like what is there now.

We had originally wanted fish/underwater for Kiefer, but he really started to show a lot of interest in cars and trucks, so we just went with that instead. My brother used Winne the Pooh for at least two of his three boys. They both really liked Winnie, but after about 4 years old, they didn't want Winnie the Pooh any more. They wanted cars and sports and outer space stuff.

If you see something your kids seem to gravitate towards, those are good hints for themes to use in their bedrooms. Cameron likes animals, Kiefer likes cars and trucks. So far, my boys like each other's rooms just as much as their own. It worked out well so far.

My son was into firetrucks, dinosaurs, and trains all the way until about 1st grade. After that was when his tastes began to mature into more big boy stuff. He stopped being into Disney and themed stuff around 5.

My son has a safari animal theme on three of his walls and then big baseball stadium mural on the one wall...the previous owners of the house had it and my DH loved it so much, he did not take it down.
I would go with their interests...I think firetrucks/race cars/etc would be a theme that they could keep for a while.

If you use real photos/posters rather than cartooned ones, I think it would "grow" better. For example, see if your mechanic has some freebie calendars kicking around with formula 1 or nascar cars. Then for sheets and duvets, go with solids or stripes in bold colors.

My son is 2 and I did a transportation theme in his room. the walls are blue, his furniture is espresso brown, and the bedspread is one that was made for him, it's black with red trim and all sorts of car related items on it.
This is the theme of the wall decals I bought, and we bought the lamp as well.

Right now he LOVES the cars/trucks all over his wall, and as he gets older, the theme will change easily enough since the base color is semi-neutral.

That's actually the same set we have. We are also painting the walls blue, though the furniture is a mix of black and brown, he loves it! We also have the valance, the lamp and decals. The wild animals theme we have doesn't have the decals and some other stuff the transportation one offers, but this is the wild animal set we got. Linky It's a really nice store, although a little expensive sometimes.

I think a fish aquarium mural would be soooooo cool.

Have you checked out fathead.com? They have some great stuff for putting up on the walls and it's not "permanant". We bought Star Wars stuff for my son's room. You don't necessarily have to buy themed bedding, but something that coordinates with it (colors, etc.).
