Hi ladies, I had posted another post on issues i'm having from recovering with my csection on 5/24. I saw my doc today for a one week check and had told her I had only been able to go to the bathroom once since surgery and I had to take dulcolax to go which wasn't comfortable. After looking at my belly she said i was full of gas (sorry if tmi) and said she wanted me to start taking a dulcolax every other day; she also said she wanted me to try drinking warm water with a little corn syrup and to call monday if I did not have results. I hate dulcolax because the crampng and such i get with it is so uncomfortable. just wondering if anyone else has been through this and if you found something that worked for you. It's just awful and i'm exhausted and just dpresesed I have another issue to deal with in this recovery thanks so much for any help..

When I left the hospital I was prescribed a laxative & supposed to take it 2xs daily. I've heard good things about Miralax... but perhaps your OB could prescribe something a bit stronger. Did you have to take iron supplements? Those can really mess you up.

Hi, well I took a glycerin suppository i nthe hospital and nothing. I did buy miralax and when spoke with doc today she said dulcolax at this point would be better.. i didn't have to take iron supplements BUT I was in the hospital for 2 months prior so my activity was greatly cut down which I'm sure did NOT help. Of course now I'm getting up and doing stuff but not walkign walking because I'm still sore. michelle, what laxative did your doc recommend and did it work/help??

dulcolax is a stool softener right? They don't produce gas, but they release the gas that is caught up in the poo. Glycerin suppositories work well, just put it up there and wait a while.

Oh make sure you're drinking TONS of water. And a cup of coffee! Coffee is a laxative.

Oy. I so can't remember. I do know I took it until I was sure everything was moving really well-about a week & a half. I'm very surprised they didn't start you on something in the hospital- C-sections are notorious for stopping people up. I was also on iron supplements. Since I don't remember what it was, here's a link to a homemade JUICE which is supposed to help. I will also ask a friend what juice she uses for her daughter who has constipation issues and has special needs.

If you are on a prescription Iron supplement STOP it and try Floradix. You can get it at health food stores with no script required. It is not constipating at all.

I 2nd the suppositories - get whats IN there out. Lots of walking - walking makes our bowels move. Lots of water and fibre! I always took a glass of prune juice and it straightened me out after labors. (or a glass of milk and my lactose intolerance took care of it for me - not suggested tho! LOL)

Mineral oil, about a tbsp in a glass of orange juice. Down it though, it tastes gross.

Metamucil everyday, a stool softener everyday and some of the new Activia yogurt everyday should help in the long run but stop all iron pills and dairy for now. Chocolate, juices and any hot liquids are laxatives. Make sure you are up and moving as much as possible. I know that miserable feeling and I am so sorry you are going through it!

What about those "chocolate laxatives in the drug stores ?"

Foods to bind you up: Rice, bananas, cheese, carrots, apples

Foods that make you GO GO GO: pears, peaches, plums, prunes, paw paw, pineapple, squash, apples juice (BUT NOT APPLES because more "pectin" in apple juice) pear juice is suppose to be as effective as prune juice.

    Lots and lots of water.

Often you will need stool softeners to keep things soft due to the pain meds, a laxative to get things moving from being backed up, and water to keep it going.

I ate prunes in the hospital, the first thing I had was a litre of pear juice, brought my own stool softeners and STILL took some time before it all worked out.
