Ditto this but replace Rachel with 'Kell-y/ie/i/ey' I was one of 5 in my grade and there were 2-5 in every other grade in high school. I wanted names that were different and yet traditional in some way and they are for family members: Jocelyn Carole (my grandmother is Joyce and my mom is Carolyn) and Liam Victor (my FIL is George William and HATES the name George so we went with a Celtic variant of William- Liam and my dad is Victor) I had to see their little faces before naming them so our other choices were: Evelyn Victoria, Gavin Carroll, and Joel Victor.
Our top choices now are Eliza, Juliet, and Vivian, and Jonas, Elias, and Nolan.

being a Jami I def. wanted names that were not common. I think I had 5 Jami's in my school.

Gage Kylend: Gage because both my husband and I loved it. Kylend, I combined my husband's name Kyle with Courtland. I wanted to name him Courtland but husband hated it!!

Twins Rori-Katherine. Double name. My mom was Katherine so I wanted to use it, but I wanted the first name to be simple but not common.

Remington Nicholas: I just loved the name Remington and Nicholas is a family name.

I am one of those people that hates to hear other kids with the same names as mine. I tried to go for originality without being too weird. lol

John Herbert is named after his dad, grandfather and great grandfather, Erin Elizabeth is an Irish name that I always loved, Allison is a name I like because she can be called Allie or Allison and I love the way they both sound, her middle name is Mary which my grandma picked. Ashley flowed well with Allison which is what I wanted for twin girls and her middle name is Rose because Rose from the Golden Girls is the only person who could make me laugh during my month long stay in the hospital on bedrest!

I had her the name Morgan (for a girl) on a TV show and liked it, even before I was ever pregnant. So that name was set. We also liked the name Jake Ryan (from Sixteen Candles) for a boy (this too was before I ever became pregnant. So we had both a boy and girl name picked. Then when I found out I was pregnant with twin girls, we could NOT find a second name that we both liked. We went through every name in a book. Brooke was the only one we both finally agreed on. When I was pregnant with Peyton, DH did not want to know the sex of the baby, but I did. He stepped out so the US tech could tell me. At the time, I really loved the name Peyton (from One Tree Hill). DH and I agreed that if it was a girl I could pick the name, and if it was a boy he would pick the name. I knew it was a girl so I had it in the bag. He SWORE it was a boy, so he was comfortable with the deal. When they said you have a girl when she was born, DH was floored. With Jake, he wanted to know the sex of the baby and was happy to be able to finally use the name Jake Ryan, lol.

Anna Charissa - Charissa is the name of DH's cousin and best friend who died when DH was 23. Anna is from my own name issues. I hate my name. Sorry to any other Stacy's, but I just really don't like it. I always wished my parents had named me Annastacia instead of just Stacy. That way I could have gone by Anna, Anya, or a couple other nicknames. I wanted to name our DD Anya, but DH wouldn't go for it. So, we compromised with Anna. I love traditional names, so I was very happy with this.

Richard Ian - Richard is my DH's name, his dad's name, and his grandpa's name. So, I was resigned to the fact that we would name our son Richard even though I'm no a fan of the name. My only rule was that I wanted to call him by his middle name. I didn't want our DS to be known at Little Ricky for the rest of his life. Since DH, his dad, and his grandpa all have different middle names, we had more freedom to chose something we liked. Ian came from a lot of back and forth. We talked about Evan, but DH's nephew is named Evan. Ian had the same flow and happens to be the name of DH's favorite musician (Ian Anderson).

As a bonus, Anna means "Gracious" or "Grace" and Ian means "God is Gracious" or "God's Grace" depending on your source. I loved that they had such similar meanings.

We wanted to use a mix of traditional and family names. I'm not a fan of trendy names, and for that matter, uniquely spelled names either. I feel sorry for some kids that will have a hard time learning their names ans will spend a life time teaching other's how to spell it. While I like that my name is spelled Catie (short for Catherine) I hate that not once has anyone spelled my name correctly. And I get called "cat-tee" all the time too. that's another subject though...

I knew from the time I was a teenager that if I ever had a boy he would have Cooper in his name somewhere, after my father. My son is the 4th generation of Cooper in my family. I hate that it has become so trendy now.

My daughter's middle name is Mahlon (pronounced may-lin), after my father in law. I love that name, and knew that since one was named after my father that it only made sense that the other would be named after the other grandfather.

When it came to first names DH and I just could not agree, so we decided that we would each pick one. I picked Samuel, and without my full liking, he picked Emily. I DID not want to have an Emily, too popular for my taste, but he got to choose. It was still a traditional name, and I liked the way it sounded with Mahlon, so Emily it was. Now I couldn't imagine DD as anything but an Emily, it really fits her personality well.

And both of my kids go by nick-names. I really like Samuel much better than Sam, but it was shortened by everyone to Sam before he was even born. Emily gets called Em or Emmy May a lot too.

Oh, and another naming pet peeve of mine are the super cutsie names that are really cute for a little boy or girl, but I don't really think that some parents think past that age...like when they are an adult and have a professional job.

    What a fun thread!

Our boys have three names each (not including our last name). We wanted them to have what I call "story" names...you know, a name with a story as to why that's the name we chose. Most of the names are family names, although some of them are more like references to family members. I lost my mom to cancer and my father lost his father to cancer, so each of our sons' first names are named after our respective parents. George was his father's name and Elijah is a reference to my mother.

    Elijah John Curran
    George Ira Percy

I look forward to the day when I can tell the boys how we chose their names and why. I want to make sure they don't ever feel that they have to be like the people they are named after. I want them to add their own story to the names.

Dh and I both have unusual names (Bevin and Dolly (Dalinda is my given name, and Dolly is my nickname), so we figured out kids should too. All of our kids have middle names that honour my side of the family, as they all carry Dh's family name.

Hayden was very uncommon 19 years ago when he was born... I updated the composer Joseph Haydn's name. His middle name is my maiden name.

Keenan was also uncommon 17 years ago, I cared for a little boy named Keenan when I was pregnant with Hayden, and always loved his name... Grant is my maternal grandmother's maiden name.

Montana was the final decision on a number of names that we had tossed around (McKenzie, Hannah (way before Hannah Montana came around), and others), she just suited the name. She has no middle name, as our last name will become her middle name when she marries (like me).

Malachi came from the bible. We never thought of naming him Malachi, we had other names, but none of them suited him. My dh came to the hospital the day after he was born and asked me what I thought of Malachi, and it fit him. Don is my father's name (who passed away 17 years ago)

Takoda is a native American name (we wanted to bring their heritage into their names). It means "friend to all" which fits him. William is my grandfather's name, and just happens to be dh's grandfather's name too.

Talon is a native American name as well. McIntosh comes from my Scottish ancestors. The interesting thing about McIntosh is that I have an ancestor named William McIntosh who's father was Scottish and his mother was a Creek (native American).

So the twin's names are very fitting of their heritage ;)

Tell me about it...baby girl is Bella Grace...not because of Twilight. I hadn't even read, watched, or heard anything about Twilight when we picked the name. We get asked that all the time though. We picked it because it was one of the top two girl names we had picked and the only one we felt went with Grace best since we wanted Grace as a middle (other girl name was Zoey, but we didn't think it fit well with Grace).

The boys were our top two boy names. When we found out we were expecting (before the first u/s showing twins), we each made a list of names. Jonas and Lucas were the only two names we both had on our list so they were our number one and number two names (Bella and Zoey being our girl names). For some reason we picked out top twos for each boy and girl names (perhaps a subconscious thing...maybe I knew it was two before the u/s...ha).

Anyway...we found out Jonas was a boy first as baby A was uncooperative so baby B became Jonas. Six weeks later, baby A, who DH was calling Zoey, became Lucas.

Jonas Clark--first boy name we agreed upon and the middle name is after my dad.

Lucas James--second boy name on our list and the middle name is after DH's name.

Bella Grace--one of two girl names we agreed upon when we were pregnant with the boys (before knowing they were twins and they were boys) and Grace because we just liked it but didn't want it as a first name because of its popularity. Oddly enough...Bella is one of the most ungraceful children ever. Ha!

I was so glad when I found out I was having girls because I had picked out two that I loved years ago, Ava and Madeline. When I told my DH I liked those names he immediately said no to both. Over time however he started coming around to Ava but for some reason still didn't like Madeline. I didn't realize that Ava was such a popular/trendy name until I started checking out baby name websites and I saw the popularity rankings. That was a bit disappointing but I got over it because I loved the name so much. So Baby A became Ava Louise, with her middle name being the same as my paternal grandmother's. Her sister is Vivian Gwendoline, with her middle name being the same as my DH's paternal grandmother.

We have an Irish last name so wanted to stick with Irish/Gaelic names.

Sean Patrick - "Gift from God" - we picked the name almost before we were pregnant - love it!

Brian John - "Noble, strong, virtuous; hill" - John was my FIL
Craig Francis - "Cliff; rock" - Francis is my dad

We picked our boys' names based upon origin (Irish/Gaelic) and what we liked. I think they are all classic, strong, masculine names, which is what we were shooting for! :D

Tycho - Named after Tycho Brahe (Astronomer)
    James - DH's Dad

    Kepler - Johannes Kepler (Astronomer)
John - My Dad, grandfather & brother

Their first names are weird, I know. Not in the top 1000, even - I'd love to know how many share them. But I still feel they're easy enough to spell and pronounce based off the spelling. Of course, the text to speech systems at the pediatrician's office pronounce it like "Tih-choh" and "Key-pler," so that makes me laugh.

Anjanette Lorraine - DH is a Civil War buff and read that some general had a daughter named Anjanette. He wrote it down and kept it for a long time. I liked it too. Lorraine is MIL's first name.

Olivia Ruth - We just liked Olivia. Ruth is MIL's middle name

Josephine Dorothy - Josephine is my mom's middle name. Both DH and I had grandmothers named Dorothy.

(Olivia and Josephine were originally Charlotte and Gwendolyn. I didn't like Gwendolyn and he didn't like Charlotte, so we started over completely. Olivia is the name we first thought about when I found out I was pregnant before we discovered there were two.)

Elizabeth Rose - Elizabeth is my sister's middle name. Rose we just liked.

Random fact: All the girls' first and middle names have 5 syllables total. This wasn't planned at all. I noticed it after we named Ellie. Our last name has 3 letters, so the long first names fit well with it.

All the girls have nicknames: Annie, Jo/Joey/JoJo, and Ellie.

We had Jazzlyn already picked out. When we thought we were having one. When we had the u/s and found it was two we went thru several -lyn names before deciding on Jesslyn. Their middle names are ranee and Dunae which are my mom's and my sister's middle names

All three sons have first and middle names of various of their grandfathers.

My daughter's first name is one we liked. It's classic, literary, is the subject of a song we both really like, and is coincidentally my grandfather's grandmother's name. It's not been really popular lately, though for a variety of reasons, I fear that it is gaining in popularity right now, as are other names that were popular about a century ago.

DS's name we found in a baby name book before we even knew that he was a boy. It was the ONLY boy name we could agree on, so Sawyer it was. His middle name is Keene which is DH's mom's maiden name (and I think Sawyer Keene sounds nice together).

The girls were a completely different story. We could not agree on anything. We went through baby name books a hundred times, we made lists, we talked to family and never could decide on anything. We wanted to incorporate family somehow in their names, but none of our grandmas or other female family members had names that we liked. We both really liked Faith for a middle name, so we knew we would use that, but had to find a first name to go with it. I had some "rules" about naming them: No rhyming names, No names that started with the same letter, No "L" names (our last name starts with "L" and I don't like the double letter names), Names that would be appropriate when they are in their 40s, but could be cute at age 2. I know, I'm crazy. :tease: So when we had the girls at 34 weeks, we had no names. The hospital made us name them. The lady actually said, "You have to name them today." So we finally decided on Isabelle Faith and Olivia Cheyenne (we call them Livie and Izzy). And I must say that I love their names. There are a lot of Olivias out there, but I LOVE that name, so I didn't care. Oh, and both of these names were on my list to begin with, but DH was being stubborn about them, lol.

We wanted all of our kids to have a family name somewhere in their name. :)

Caroline Emilie-Caroline is from way back in my family and I liked it since in 2000 you hardly ever heard it, Emilie goes back 5 generations in my family. And I wanted Emilie after my Great-grandmother who had passed away a year before, but wasn't sure I wanted it as a first name at that point.

Emilie Michelle-there is an Emilie in every generation in my family going back 5 generations and no one else had used the name Emilie in my family by this point. Michelle is my middle name.

Trevor File-I have always loved the name Trevor and it was our boy name when I was pregnant with my oldest DD. File is my DH's middle name, his Dad's middle name and was his Grandmother's maiden name.

Sophia Reese was dh's great great grand mother's name and I thought it was pretty so I thought I would use the names for my daughters.
Ryder is a name my husband liked and he got to pick our son's name.

    Sophia Lynn
    Reese Nicole
    Ryder Lee

Between Seth and I we have three sisters and each of our kids has one of their middle names.

One of my closest friends in school had parents who named their children interesting names because of their last name. Their last name is Smith, and the logic used was if they were going to have such a common name for a last name they needed more creative first/middle names. So they started at the end of the alphabet and worked forwards....
    Zilicia Ann
    Yancy
    Xebic
    Vincent Bartholomew
The missing W is dad, he is William. I have to say these are the most interesting names I personally have come upon in my little town. And no there wasn't a single duplicate of any of their names while they were in school.
