if you look on babycenter, etc, you can find out when to expect a first smile, rolling over, walking, eating with a utensil and more. but there are developmental achievements that no one ever mentions. i thought we could all list our favorites here.

last night i discovered owen has hit a milestone that impacts our life greatly: stalling before bedtime. ONE more book! ONE more book! PLEASE JUST ONE MORE BOOK!

jacob has made the developmental discovery that if he bops himself in the head with a toy and then grins, mommy will laugh. repeated bops result in more laughter.

both boys have hit the milestone where they're so enthusiastic about pointing out body parts that no article of clothing or accessories will stand between their finger and the named anatomy. this includes glasses and even eyelids if the named part is the eye. nothing short of the eyeball satisfies the game.

    what are your unheralded milestones?

    Those are some good ones.

You know what one of our is--when they started repeating cuss words. :D Eli was saying f-ck over and over again the other day, not to mention sh-t. Now I've got to stop cussing.

Another one is tattling. Eli is becoming a compulsive tattler, and Mark is getting there.

Yes Rachel, I have a tattler as well. Really didn't expect it to start so soon. From all over the house, I hear DD protesting her treatment with loud shrieks of "Bubba!" "Bubba!"

Mastering table manners. Mine will not even think about starting to eat until all the proper silverware is present. They also correct me if I put their bib on wrong :)

Memory. I didn't expect them to be able to remember things from day to day this well. On one of our walks we saw some ducks in a canal. Two days later when we were by the same spot, they immediately start up a chorus of duck!, duck!. That was the first time they'd seen a duck in real life!

Rachel, I have a tattler as well. DD will rat anyone out in a heartbeat!
Insisting on using utensils was another one.
Demanding to be read to, asking for more milk
I agree with the memory as well, back in November, DH accidently shut DD's finger in the door and to this day, she holds out her pinkie and says, "Finger hurt. Kiss?" So I give her kiss and she says, "All better!" Poor DH, he feels awful every time she brings it up!

When I count "1, 2, 3" when Jack is doing something bad, he counts along with me and laughs hysterically (then continues to do whatever it was that I was warning him about). Somehow I don't think this is what Baby Center had in mind with their "counting milestone". <_<

The endless repetition. Nate said "where da horse go?" 700,000 times yesterday, looking for the neighbor's horse. Dude, he's in the barn!! I am so not teaching him "are we there yet?". :gah:

Oh yeah, and spinning in circles until they puke. :bad:

Can you tell we had a rough weekend? ;)

I thought of a few more funny ones.

When you have to start spelling things in front of them. LOL! We have to spell p-i-z-z-a and p-a-r-k all the time or they go crazy.

It took forever, but my guys are finally starting to defend each other. Eli was screaming bloody murder when we cut his hair last week, and Mark was coming up to my DH and Eli yelling at us and trying to get us to stop.

I'm also quite excited that Eli refers to himself in the first person sometimes. He usually says, "Broken, I fix it." Although it sounds more like, "Broken, affix it."

Singing to songs, that's a another recent development. They only say a few words here and there, but that's a start.

Oh yes, gotta love the hugs! Also when they start asking for hugs. Nothing cuter than a toddler lifting their arms up saying, hug? hug?

Rachel, I have to be careful what I say too. They are bright at this age! If I even drive by the park, they get anxious. We've walked there almost every day since we've moved, so it's quite familiar to them.

we recently reached that milestone and it is the BEST.

we also reached the milestone where one falls down and the other one runs over to me, points, and says "uh oh!" to alert me to the situation.

    it's b-a-t-h in this house! :D

finger waving - i have no idea who they picked this up from but when someone's doing something they shouldn't they wag their finger at them and sternly say "no!" the other day, their cousin was over (he's a couple of months younger) and they were all eating lunch together. he started throwing his food on the floor & the girls let him know, in stereo, with synchronized finger waving, that that was not allowed.

fish faces - when we ask what does a fish do they both make with the guppy lips.

Okay, we have to be so careful when we spell "I-c-e c-r-e-a-m" - he totally recognizes what we are spelling. Even if we try initials "I-C" - he still gets it - we started using "frozen sweet milk", but I'm sure that won't last very long.

My DS has started this "because" phase. "Why did you do that?" "Because"...drives me crazy!! He'll never say more than "because". He seems too young to have already learned this!

When I say "eat" the twins start crawling towards their highchairs!! I LOVE that!!

Some not that great but still important milestones. :)

    - Hitting each other with toys for fun

    - Hitting and pushing each other when they're upset

    - Becoming picky eaters

    - Trying to put things in the (covered) electrical outlets

    - Trying to take off their diapers

    - Handling their genitals at any opportunity

    - Getting upset when I try to get us to leave somewhere fun

    - Trying to run outside whenever an outside door is open. (We use our laundry room as an 'airlock' )

This is a great thread! Here are some of our recent ones

    - learning that they can make each other laugh - they crack each other up when they are in their high chairs
    - learning how to climb on the couch and now the recliner - only Carter has mastered this as Matthew is a little too bottom heavy.
    - learning how to throw things off of said couch or recliner once they are on it
    - trying their hardest to plug things in (darn those outlet covers)
    - playing chase (usually when mama is trying to take away something that they are not supposed to have)
    - throwing whatever it is mama is trying to get before she can take it away
    - learning that putting on shoes means we are going outside. Matthew will stand at the door and stomp his foot once his shoes are on!

Here's one I forgot, that I was reminded of today at dinner time: passing food they don't like back & forth between their highchairs, until one or the other girl gets smart, turns her palm over, watches it fall to the floor & then looks up at me and says "uh-oh"!

Also: holding hands; hugging one another (for some reason this is their favourite bath-time pasttime, hugging!).
And today, Fiona started spinning around & around to "ring-a-roses". She topped it off by falling down at the appropriate verse, then gave herself a nice round of applause. :D

oh yeah, i've got one of those. jacob takes any opportunity to touch himself and grin. when we ask them to point out their belly buttons owen points to his tummy and jacob goes digging in his diaper to try to locate the thing he THINKS is the right answer. :rotflmbo:

we're trying to teach him the word penis just so we can correct him and differentiate.
