My right breast is killing me, it just started, it's not swollen, and not red, but it hurts. It even hurts to lift the babies. Could I have pulled something or do you think it could be a blocked duct?

it could be a blocked duct. :unknw:

where on the breast does it hurt? how would you describe the pain?

It starts from the underneath and spreads up to the side. It's an ache, like a sore muscle

hmmm...it's hard to say. blocked ducts are usually accompanied by swelling. did the pain start suddenly? does it come & go? is there a specific incident that happened that makes you think it may be a pulled muscle?

No wonder you felt bad yesterday- getting sick is no fun. I guess priority 1 is emptying that breast. Put your best nurser on there first as much as you can. Massage that spot, put a hot washcloth on it before you nurse. The last time I had a spot like that I'd put the baby on, put the washcloth on, then a dry one on top so my boy couldn't touch it.

    Feel better.

Hi - Like the PP said, NURSE NURSE NURSE and/or PUMP PUMP PUMP, drink a lot of fluids, and, since you have a fever accompanying the pain, I think you should see your OB or a breast specialist and start an antibiotic. They may culture the bacteria and also start you on an antibiotic that is appropriate for a staph infection, which is what they typically are. You can still nurse on several of the antibiotics that are effective for this bacteria.

I do not mean to scare you at all, but my mastitis and abscess were not promptly treated because they were misdiagnosed and medically mismanaged and I ended up having breast surgery two weeks ago when my girls were 6 weeks old. Of course, my case is rare, but I just want you to be safe and healthy!! (I have actually been meaning to post my story in the hopes that it will help others avoid a similar fate.)

PM me if you want any additional information.

A few weeks ago I had my first plugged duct, almost identical to your situation, and have a clever solution -

put the back side of an electric toothbrush up against the duct!

The vibrations can help break up the duct. I tried to do that before nursing, and it cleared up pretty quickly. And felt good.

But get right on whatever you do to address the problem. Michele, ouch!

    Good luck!

The tooth brush trick worked but not completely. It is def better then what it was but not gone completely. I dont feel like death anymore and the fever is gone. I also applied heat while pumping and nursing. Thanks girls!

I liked the hot bag (I think it's filled with oats or flax, or something, then heated in the microwave)--stays nice and warm! Dr. Newman also recommends ultrasonic (you can get it at a physiotherapy clinic, but it costs $$).

Gena - I keep meaning to tell you that I loved this idea. I don't have an electronic toothbrush, so I used my electronic facial cleanser/massager.
