Two gallons a week?!

Up until a couple of weeks ago, since the girls turned one we were giving them Whole DHA fortified milk. This particular brand only came in ½ gallons, so we would buy them 6-8 at a time (the expiration date was always far out). But for some reason (tired mom) I didn’t realize until I started buying the normal gallons of whole milk that they are going through about 2 a week! We do use some for cooking and of course we see a lot go down the drain. But that’s close to a gallon a week per kid! They do eat pretty well (at least I think they do) and snack during the day with water always available. They don’t like juice yet, I tried some apple juice and even diluted it but they did not like it one bit. WDYT?

This has me thinking...we go through a gallon of milk in one day or about a day and a half. They only drink 20 ounces. They get 10 ounces when they wake in the morning, five with their first snack, and another when they wake from their second nap. The rest of the day they get water. How many ounces are your girls drinking each time?

That sounds normal to me :pardon: I have 3 that drink the whole milk and we go through a gallon of milk for almost 9 sippy cups. We go through soooo much milk!

Sounds normal to me. We go through about 2 gallons a week here. They get milk sippies 3 times a day.

Yeah we go through 2-3 gallons a week. I try to get them to drink two milk sippies a day--they are 8-10 ounces each. The rest of the time they get water. I have had to limit Eli's milk. He's a milk stealer (takes his brother's milk) and would drink like 30-40 ounces and eat little to no solid food.

That's not too much at all. I think that we got through about 2.5 gallons a week.

When we were all staying at home, we would go through 3-4 gallons a week. A gallon every two days. (Cereal, cooking, drinking it. . .)

If you add adults to the mix--it's like 4-5 gallons at our house, and I'm the only milk drinker. LOL, so I guess I single handedly drink 2 gallons a week, well DH eats cereal and I cook with milk too, but it's mostly me drinking it.

Eli sounds like my Ryan, that kid LOVES milk.

We go thru 2-3 gallons a week too, Michael drinks about 16-20oz a day and Ryan gets 24+ (if he steals his brother's cup).

Yeah, I'd say we go through *at least* 2 gallons a week, probably more like 3. And that doesn't include DH and I; we drink skim and use half-and-half for coffee!

I thought it was normal - we go through a gallon every two days. That does seem like too much - 128 ounces in a gallon, 64 ounces per day, 32 ounces per kid per day..I guess I'm still giving them too much milk. I guess we need to target the 16 - 20 ounces per day, which would be more like 1 gallon every 4 days...

I'm not including the rest of us that get lower fat milk...

Reminds me, I think we're just about out at home, and I need to buy two more gallons to get through the next few days :silly:

Sounds normal...we still go through that much in a week, if not more.

Thanks for the numbers breakdown. I guess if there are 128oz in a gallon, that equals ~18oz a day per child...so that sounds about right. The more I find out the more I feel like I owe my mother a lot of money! I think I'll go and write her a check now!

    thanks everyone!

  17. oh I wish I only went through 2 gallons. I also have two older boys whole drink 2 gallons of raw milk weekly but for my babies who are lactose intolerant, I buy 4 gallons plus 6 1/2 gallons of lact.free milk and mix it. Im trying to build their tolerance for it. I know my family drinks it and cook with it but thats a total with raw milk = 9 gallons a week and lact free milk is NOT CHEAP. My boys always had a strong gag reflex so getting table foods in them is hard. they are 17months and I feed them stage 2 and 3 baby foods plus milk. Any suggestions on types of foods they may eat? They only have 4 teeth each.

We use three gallons (usually give one to daycare) a week, if not more, and neither me or dh drinks it at all - no coffee, no cereal, sometimes in cooking but rarely. My two do drink too much, but two gallons sounds perfectly normal!

We go through 5 to 6 gallons of skim milk a week at our house (DH and I drink it too). So no, I don't think 2 gallons is a too much. :)

Wow... mine drink about 30oz a day each. And they eat a ton of solid food. And they like to drink juice in addition to all that.

My guys are around 3 gallons a week.

    Some things I have noticed:
-BJs has cheap whole milk with long expirations (not like we wouldn't drink it by then!)
-both my and my dh's total cholesterol levels went up with whole milk in the house. So we now have a seperate container of milk for us grownups.
We have asked to switch the guys over to lower fat that whole but the drs say to wait until 2 years in our cases.
-one of mine is teething his 2yr molars & prefers to drink milk, water, eat fruit or eat icecream. So if you see a drastic increase in milk consumption, check out those back molars!

    Hi,

I just give each my boys about 13oz of milk each day. in other words, one bottle in the morning and another before they go to bed. If I give them more, they will drink it especially in the morning. However, they will not eat enough solid food during the day which is more important to them at that age, right?

Also, I give them during the day water and orange juice as well.

Am I giving my sons little amount of milk? should they be drinking more?

The advice from our pedi said 16-20 oz a day until they are two. After two, if they still are on the small size we can continue to give them 16-20 oz of full fat milk. We don't have much problem with the girls not eating if they drink a full 20 oz of milk each day, we have to to time it right and make sure they aren't eating too many snacks.

All 3 of my boys love their milk and my DH has a bad cereal habit (he has a bowl just about every night). We do whole milk for the little 2 and usually go through about 3 gallons a week. We also have 2% for my older DS, DH and I. We end up going through about 2 gallons of that per week, so we go through 5 gallons every week. Sometimes I feel like I need a bigger fridge just for the milk!

I agree with that! This post really made me realize how much milk they were drinking! I am trying to now limit their milk to the 16-20oz a day. Good to be aware of drinking to much milk!
