At what age did you LOs had their first hair cut?

    Hi mommies,

One of my son's hair is now long and I would love to see it cut a bit. That would be the first time he cuts his hair. But my DH says it's a bit early, that he should be walking when we take him to the hairdresser.

Another thing is that the hairdresser where we plan to take him for his first cut, advises that the whole hair be cut really short the first time to make the hair that grows stronger. Anybody else heard of this theory?

Also, I Just wonder when did you LOs got their first hair cut?

    Thank you.

My girls didn't even have hair until two..so they didn't get their first cut until about three. My son got his at about 2 or 2.5, he didn't have much hair either. I had bald babies!!

My guys are pretty hairless. Nate had his first haircut on Christmas Eve this year, when he was almost 17 months old. I just gave Jack his first haircut (and Nate his second!) on Easter weekend. There were just a few wisps hanging down over his ears; not enough to even save, but it was bothering me so off they came.

I talked to my hairdresser, and he said he doesn't recommend me bringing them in until they're more like 3 years old. He taught me how to give them a trim myself, and it turned out pretty good! I've never heard of having to cut hair short the first time; that sounds kind of strange to me. :pardon: But my guys are such baldies that I treasure every bit of hair they have and would never let a hairdresser give them a buzz cut!

Another parent of baldies here :wavey: DD got her first hair cut at 22 months...she has patches of short hair and other patches of hair that are unruly, so I have the hairdresser just trim her hair up. DS got his first hair cut at 24 months and that was also a trim. He does not have enough hair to really buzz cut but enough where he needs a trim on top and around the sides.
I have not heard the theory about cutting the hair short the first time around  My hairdresser recommended the kids come in every couple of months for a trim and that's it.

My LOs are 16 months old now and have had 3 haircuts each. The first was around 11 months. They are almost ready for another one because its starting to get in their eyes again. They have a head full of beautiful hair!

Okay first off I think your hairdresser is lazy! That isn't true about hair growing out stronger if cut shorter, but it's easier to cut it shorter when they are young.
My oldest didn't get his first haircut until he was 3, he had beautiful blonde curls and I just  it! My ds Jake is 2 and has had his hair cut twice, the first time when he 18 months or so. He has stick straight thick hair. He actually needs another one. I haven't cut dd's because I love the long hair and it's still thin, but I do cut the bangs.
We go to a place geared to kids, the seats are airplanes and firetrucks. They have tvs for movies and a million toys. They also have a nice secured play area in the same area so I don't have to worry about my other little ones and can pay attention to the one getting a hair cut. Also the hairdressers are awesome and so used to the wiggley kids. They offer lollipops and they all have these really cute fake cell phones in their pockets that my ds LOVES!
    GL on your decision!

Buzzing it for the first cut to make it grow in stronger is an old wives' tale. It probably started because cutting off the thinner baby hair to make the hair all the same length makes it look thicker once it grows out. And the hairdresser who doesn't recommend bringing them in until 3 simply doesn't like cutting hair when the kid is crying and possibly resisting.

I took the boys in when their hair started looking rather long (around 18 months) and they draped both of us and let the boy getting his hair cut sit in my lap. They've gone as needed since then and stopped sitting in my lap on their 3rd visit. I just take them to the walk-in places (whichever one has a coupon) because they all give lollipops when they're done. Giving them something to hold their attention is a good idea for those first few visits but I don't recommend the lollipop be given during the haircut because if they pull it out and wave it around, hair sticks to it and then you have tears over that.

I've never heard of this and it sounds like hogwash to me.

We trimmed the girls' bangs ourselves starting around 12 months. Their first trip for a professional haircut was around age 2. If we had been better at cutting bangs, I would have put it off longer, but we always cut them really crooked and they were getting old enough that I actually cared what their hair looked like.

They actually sat in the chair (on my lap) pretty well at age 2, but around age 3 it was harder. That's when we switched to a kid-specific place. I thought those were ridiculous before I had kids, but now I know that if it makes the kid want to sit still in the chair, it's gold!

Or he realizes that the kids will have super fine hair like their mother and doesn't want to have to charge her $35 apiece to snip some "frog fur". ;)

My girls have really long hair already. In the back it's to their shoulders. Needless to say, they had their first haircut when they were 6 months old, but they just get their bangs trimmed. Not sure why it would make a difference if they were walking or not, but if you want to cut it then do it! ;) Plus, they can't stand when their hair is in their face. I didn't take them to the salon...we do haircuts at home in their chairs.

14 months. Nathaniel really needed it. Matthew didn't really other than to even it out.

    Went to Barber Shop.
Got our first haircuts FREE!!!!! :clapping:
and they even got a sign certificate & we have plenty of samples of their first haircut.

My hairstylist suggests calling it a hair trim or hair styling since the word "cut" usually refers to an ouchie.

my Girls are 21 months. When their hair is wet it is down their back. When it dries its much shorter. We put it in clips or rubber bands to keep it out of their face. We are not planning on getting it cut anytime soon.

I was looking across this forum to get a heads up and see what more experienced moms do and found this question. I was a hairdresser and cutting the hair shorter will NOT make the hair stronger. Cutting the hair will not change the hair follicle that the hair is growing out of. All cutting can do is even it up more. Baby hairs tend to grow out longer in some areas than others. Esp when the bald spots start filling in. That being said my 8mth olds have had 3 haircuts and thats because I was trying to keep everything shorter till the bald spots filled in. Also a child does not need to walk into the shop for a haircut. Kids don't like hair in their eyes either. It feels better even if its just a trim. lots of hairdressers hate cutting kids hair cause they move alot, cry, and are overall difficult to cut sometimes. That being said..some kids are perfect angels.

We just gave ds his first haircut last month - he was about 18 months. His hair is kind of wispy and sticks out all over the place, but his current bowl-cut/Dumb and Dumber look is better than the mullett/sideburns thing he did have going on! I just went to a walk-in place and he sat on dh's lap and was fine. He wasn't sure about all that was going on but he was still and quiet. I'm really glad that we did it since it just makes him look a little cleaner and less shabby - even though dh wanted us to just do it at home. I am not known for my artistic or cutting abilities and wasn't about to try that! DD hasn't had a cut and I don't think there is much hope for making hers look better anytime soon because she got the worst combo possible of me and dh - super fine and super straight!

boys are different. If it starts getting long and in their eyes its time to cut! My twins and oldest went in at 1 years and the middle boy went in at 7 months because he had soo much hair! but beware, with boys youll be in every month to get it cut from here on out!! good luck!

We went at 1 year! My boys have had a full head of hair since day 1..I just could not take the long hair anymore. We went to a fun place where the seats are planes, firetrucks and police cars. Needless to say, they had a great time and they look great!!

All my babies were born fairly hairy! My first son had his first cut at 4 months...it had gotten to the point where it was hanging in his eyes and we just had to do something about it! We did the trim ourselves....big mistake! At 7 months we took him into a kids place that had the fun seats and everything. Much better! With one of the twins, Kyle, he was 7 months for his first cut. Again, his hair was hanging in his eyes. We took him to JCPenny's and they called it a "maintenance" cut so that we only had to pay like $7 or something. We haven't taken Addison in yet but I may soon just to even her hair out a bit. She has long pieces in some spots and also has an 80's tail in the back that is off centered, lol.
