I know its common but when did it start for you?

I just looked rib pain up and it can be a sign of preeclampsia, should I be concerned? How do u know if its just normal rib pain or not?

I have rib pain often. But I feel one baby's bump under it, so I assume its a little guy burrowing in. It usually goes away after a while. Its nice, the top baby doesn't kick anywhere I can feel, so its my way of knowing he's still bopping around in there!

i've had rib pain all my pregnancies. Each pregnancy they have started earlier than the last. This twin pregnancy has been especially rib-painful. Started earlier and is worse. It's because baby B likes to snuggle up underneath my right ribcage.

I've heard that the pre-e rib pain is mainly underneath the right ribcage (I think) but you'd most likely have other symptoms too. Doesn't hurt to mention it to your doc though during your next appointment.

That's interesting - I had excruciating rib pain starting at about 30 weeks. I just thought it was because ds was wedged in there, dd was bullying him out of prime real estate and the only place he had to go was under my ribs. However, I did develop preeclampsia and never knew that it could be a sign.

I have had the rib pain in all my pregnancies. Mine starts as my belly starts to get big. Its from the upward pressure of your expanding uterus causing your ribs to expand more than they want to be so your cartilage actually gets inflamed. I have a small rib cage normally (I wear a 32 bra band size) so mine really kills! Especially as I sleep at night because when you are laying down the uterus just expands into your rib cage. Mine is the worst when I wake in the morning. It is very tender to the touch and I often have to massage it throughout the night. My upper back hurts too but its my ribs in the back not really back muscles. It is one of my worst preggo symptoms, that and RLS. My ob said to take Tylenol but I dont like taking tylenol every day so I just deal with it. Ive guess if you dont have signs of pre e then it could just be your rib cartilage is getting inflamed. Ive never had pre e or signs of pre e.

I was having severe rib pain, it literally felt like it was ripping...turns out it was. My ob and peri said that my baby B was burrowed up in my ribs, but her size was actually causing my muscles on my ribs to seperate from the rib cage itself. It was horribly painful at times, I used tylenol as much as I could when it got bad, and alternated heat/cold to ease the pain.

The good news is it went away almost immediately after delivery! The fun of being pregnant with twins! :)

My Orion (B), who on good days I'd say just liked to be closer to my heart & on bad days I'd try to wedge out of my ribs was ensconsed up there- they had to use the vacuum to get him out, lol. Today he still loves nooks and crannies.

I'm sorry your baby is up there- it hurts. I never worried about pre-e, only because it made sense to me that that was the only place he could fit & I could actually feel his heel, fist, then head up in there.

Is it possible to be a baby up in my rib, Im only 20 week? Or can it be my uterus? It just kills right now I can't imagine how it will be in a few weeks... I feel like going to the dr now!! :(

i was going to say the same thing - as i understand it, the pre-e symptom is usually felt more on the right (although it can be across the top of the uterus) & is actually your liver.

yup - it could still be a baby at that gestation. when is your next OB appointment? i think it would be worth a call to the office if your appointment isn't for a while. if you're really uncomfortable they may have suggestions on how to alleviate the pain. or if you're really concerned, are you able to call Health Link? i'm not sure if it's an Alberta wide service or if it's in Calgary only. but at the least they would be able to give you some guidance on when/if you should seek additional medical advice. i'm sorry you're in so much pain!

my whole right side under breasts and side of rib cage are extremely tender and its hard to get comfortable at night. my son is on my left and hes larger than she is and its often uncomfortable to sleep on left. ice packs and tylenol help temporarily.

I have it too and have for a while. It's mostly on the right side. But I really think mine is our Benjamin (baby B) wedged in there. Our Ella (baby A) is all the way down in my pelvis ready to go but Benjamin is transverse across the top there and loves to flip side to side. Literally. One day he will have his head on the right and then we'll have a peek at him a few days later or a week later and he will be flipped to the other side. I have NO IDEA how he has room to move about in there but needless to say my right ribs seem to be the preferred foothold for all his acrobatics. There are sometimes I put my hand there and can feel a solid, round something. It has to either be a head or a baby butt. If I give him a little poke sometimes he'll move and give me some relief.

    Good luck! :)

I had horrible rib pain on one side from about the time I was 16 weeks. Every time I got in the car one baby would put here heel on the top of my ribs and let her food slide all the way down. I just think it because they were so squished in there LOL.

    Thanks for the replies :)

I do have an appointment on Wednesday I think Ill just wait until then and tell the dr. Im wondering if its my actual rib or my stomach or something. It doesn't feel like a bone thing its more in the stomach.
