Suddenly sound sensitive

One of my boys has suddenly become frightened to the point of screaming and shaking of certain sounds - ripping paper, rustling garbage bags, anything done with styrofoam. We never know what's going to set him off. Anyone else experience this?

Have you talked to your pedi about it? Did it just start or was he always a little sensitive? my one little guy was always a little sensitive to sound in general and if things got to loud he would get totally inconsoluble. They told me at the time that he was having sensory issues and he is slowly starting to out grow it. I would talk to your pedi about it and perhaps get referred to OT because they can be very helpful in recognizing triggers and find ways to help you deal with them. Best of luck

I would definitely talk to your pedi about that. He could be sound sensitive, or something else could be bothering him. It could even just be anxiety that is causing him to be sensitive to those sounds, but it's a good idea to bring it up to his doctor so they can keep an eye on him and whether or not this is something to be concerned about.

The first time it happened was a week ago. He showed no signs of sensitivity before then, quite the opposite. He's going through a growth spurt right now I think, at least he's eating like he is. Could that be stressing him? I'm trying to decide if I should wait it out a little longer or call my doc tomorrow.

It can't hurt to call and talk to the doctor or nurse. They may want to check his ears as well; I know that when my nephew got tubes he used to cringe at the sound of people eating potato chips. Poor thing's ears were so plugged up that everything had been muffled before.

My guys are very sensitive to loud noises (especially the vacuum cleaner and coffee grinder), but they've always been this way. If your DS is not normally this way then I'd call just for peace of mind.

Good luck and let us know what the ped says!

Thanks for everyone's thoughts. I just talked with my Pedi and she said that, since there doesn't seem to be anything else odd going on, that it's probably just a phase and I need to continue to reassure him when a noise sets him off. I should try to not do to noises that I know bother him but not to isolate him from noise in general so he gets used to it. It's gonna be hard since one of the noises that bothers him is the rustling of the diaper bin bag! If this goes on for a while longer, though, I'll be talking to my Pedi again. The good thing is that he calms down pretty fast from his terror, the bad thing is that his brother is now starting to get upset when he's upset!

My boys dont like the vacuum, screw drivers, and now the sweeper. Not sure what is going on but thank you for sharing what your doctor said. So I just clean the house when they are asleep :)
