I would wait with stocking up on formula. You never know. The babies may develop a milk allergy or could be sensitive, or just fussy or gassy. When and if any of these occurs you'll have time to pick the right formula for them.

Yep, I totally agree with this. I breast fed, but when we switched to formula at 6 months we found out that my refluxer had a milk protein allergy too. He couldn't tolerate many of the formulas out there whereas my DD could. That's an easy thing to run out and get or just have one can on hand as back up.

ETA: My DD drank Enfamil and my DS needed Nutramigin.

I agree. Stock up on diapers, hold off on formula. You just never know when they aren't going to be able to drink one specific formula & many stores won't take returns on formula very well.

I would hold off on the formula. Hopefully breastfeeding will go well and you won't need formula. If it becomes apparent at the hospital that you will need to supplement with formula, the hospital may give you a bunch of free formula to try out. Then you can see what works for your babies.

I concur, and while Target did let me return 1 can of soy formula (I had a receipt) they had to put a red tag on it and the clerk said they had to return it to the manufacturer, that they weren't allowed to put it back on the shelf since it was formula and legally can't be resold. So I would definitely hold off on buying any formula, because not all stores will be as customer friendly like Target and let you return something they can't resell. We also had to play the formula roulette game before we were ever able to settle on a formula that both boys would tolerate.

I would not buy formula. Wait til you come home from the hospital. The hospital should give you some. Plu, they may have a reaction to it.

We did not buy diapers either because we did not know which ones we would like. So we put money on a gift card ($100 a week) at the store that had the best value/variety. We are still working on the gift cards!!

I agree on the formula, I would hold off on it. Your hospital might give you some formula to take home and that might be the formula your twins want (as was the case with ours...if we tried other then Similac brand, they were not having it) and you are not sure if they will have any allergy issues. Good luck!

I would agree with above posters. I had twins and they were my 3rd and 4th kiddos. I stocked up on ENfamil (what I used with the other two boys) only to find it didnt work for them digestive wise. It was a trial and error kind of thing. Stock up on diapers and wipes (I went through I MEGA BOX of diapers...the 240 kind...a WEEK just to give you an estimation)

I'd vote to buy 1 can, and to make sure to call your hospital and find out what their standard is, or to just bypass the milk intolerance possibility and go with soy?

When we were discharged, we got the "greenlight" at like 8 am, but it was 7 pm by the time we finally managed to leave the hospital, plus an hour drive home, etc etc. Both babes were being supplemented at that point, and we only got like 4 little mini bottles of ready-mixed stuff to bring home (probably could have asked for more, but live and learn.) We were exhausted, and fortunately my mum came over and swung by the store for us and got us a can to hold us over.

I am BF, but I signed up somehow to receive some free samples from Similac and Enfamil. I think it was through a little thing you mailed in that I saw in a prenancy magazine in the OB office waiting room. You might go to the web-site to see if there is something there.

    Enfamil's program

I received 2 cans of enfamil, and 4 cans of similac (2 of the "regular" and 2 soy). I was unsure if BF would work out or not, but I haven't had to buy any formula. I also got a case of enfamil liquid concentrate that my hospital filled out paperwork for - some sort of twin program. So, I'd hold off on buying anything. Just get some freebies to have on hand if needed.

When I had to start supplementing around 8 months (I BF too) my Pedi recommended Nestle Good Start because it was the least likely to lead to constipation issues. It worked great - the only complaint was that it was kind of clumpy, so you had to mix it really good to get out all of the clumps.

After a month or so on Good Start, when we tried anything else (Similac, Enfamil, whatever) my babies would break out in a rash on their faces, so we were stuck with only that. Couldn't use all these coupons and this free formula I had gotten!!

That story was just to second what PP said - don't stock up until you know what will work for your babies!!

I'll ditto what everyone else said. But I'm going to suggest that you also don't stock up on diapers and wipes, do as a pp suggested and buy gift cards instead. #1 you won't have all those boxes of diapers/wipes sitting around, just a small envelope of gift cards, but #2 your baby may not fit the diapers you've bought, different baby shapes fit different diapers. And they may react to the type of wipes you've bought....in which case you'll end up having to return diapers and wipes anyways.

    Good luck and congrats!
