I'm super thankful that I had b/g twins so I don't have that "Are they identical" problem going on! I have been asked by strangers if they were. It always boggles my mind how people can come up with that question when referring to a boy and a girl.
Yes! A college professor just asked me the same thing. :rotflmbo: I explained to him how rare that was--almost always occuring when one twin loses the "Y" chromosome and suffers from Turner's Syndrome! I think it is pretty safe to assume that b/g twins are not identical because it is soooo rare that they are.
I once had a nurse at the doctor's office ask me if mine were identical. Didn't give me a lot of faith in her abilities!
LMAO! Its ridonkulous isn't it? Everywhere I go: "are they twins?(no, I had them a month apart) and then "are they identical? I just play dumb and say "I'm not sure-can a boy and girl be identical? I have no idea!" Lol
I didnt think I would have that question asked but I do! ALOT more than I ever though I would..I just stare at them like WTF. Even one of my friends who is a twin asked..UGH!
LOL! Sometimes I wonder if people are just so mesmerized by twins that they forget the definition of "identical"?! Like maybe since they are twins identical means something different? kwim...
At the risk of being totally scorned by all here.... When my husband and I first found out we were having twins, the OB said "looks like they're identical". Being totally clueless at the time, I remember us asking eachother if that meant they were same-sex or could be a boy/girl.....I am ashamed to admit it now, but we even googled it to find out for sure! Lets just keep this between us shall we?!? Melissa
hehe, mine are identical and i still get asked if they are a "boy and girl" even if they are dressed exactly alike :headbang:
I like to say to the question "Are they twins?" "No, they are clones" That always stops them in their tracks! :rotflmbo: And I get the "Are they boy and girl?" all the time, even when it's obvious by the way they are dressed with Abbey in pink and Jack in blue. I feel like I should make up a sign that says "Yes, we are twins. No, we are not identical because we are boy and girl and you can't be identical and be different sexes. Any other dumb questions for our mom?"
OHHHHH, I usually get the "are they twins?" question, I say yes, then they turn right around and say "are they identical?" I feel like saying "WTH, you JUST ASKED if they were twins, if they look identical then shouldn't that have answered your first question???" Geez! But in all reality, the ones that seem totally confused about it all are the ones that don't know their "stuff" about twins!
I honestly think people don't know what identical means. As soon as my boys were born we knew they were fraternal. Nick is blonde, blue eyed, and fair. Alex is much darker with brown hair, brown eyes, and slightly olive skin. People will comment on how different they look and then ask me if they're identical.
I think on average 'most' people don't know what they are talking about but hey, I didn't either until I found out I was having twins! (Granted, I don't think I ever asked if a boy and girl were identical...) I think people are just curious and maybe sometimes don't think about what they are asking...
I just got the "Are they twins" yesterday. They were dressed alike which is rare these days. I told her yes, and then she followed with one looks younger than the other. Does one twin look almost a year younger? :nea:
I know...people crack me up!! I mean, I guess I never thought about it before it was relevant to me, but still. It thoroughly intrigues me when people say "he must be older," about my son, because he is so much bigger. They stare at me like I'm lying when I say that no actually my daughter is actually 45 mins older. Like you've already asked if they're twins...do you really think he grew 5 lbs extra in the minutes between their birth? My favorite though was at christmas...my cousin's ditzy wife asked if they were identical (which, again, my son is like 50% bigger). Usually in public I just smile and say, "nope, fraternal" but since I know her I said "nope, last time I changed her she still didn't have a penis so I'm pretty sure they're not identical." She just stared blankly at me, did not get it at ALL.
I finally answered back yesterday by saying "no they are not identical...my son has a penis" Others around giggled, It shut them up quickly. I giggled too.
An older lady asked me if our twins are "maternal" or "paternal". I wanted to answer "both", but I kept my smart answer to myself and replied that they are fraternal. I guess people really don't understand that boy/girl twins can't be anything but fraternal.
I get that allll the time. When ppl ask if they're twins.. I feel like saying no. The other thing that I find hilarious is when ppl say "oh you look great for having twins" What if they weren't mine.. would I still look great?
The NP at the doc's office has said more than once "Jack was Baby A wasn't he? That's why he's bigger". Um...huh? I think Jack is bigger because he takes after Izzy and my nephew Allen and my brother. Abbey is dainty in hands and feet, though she's a bit of a chubbster (because she likes to sit and watch and isn't NEARLY as active as Jack is). What if Abbey has been twin A, would they be telling me she needs to be bigger? As it is, they tell me that Jack isn't big enough. I guess he dropped on his curve for his weight. It seems that as soon as he started moving all over the place, his weight dropped. He's still gaining consistently, he's still bigger than Abbey, and he's 2 inches taller than her. Let me see...more activity means he weighs less. Last time I checked, that was the advice always being given out on how to lose weight. DUH!
Yeah, I have B/G twins and we get that too. I am a teacher and my principal asked if they are identical. Hmmmmm.
"oh you look great for having twins" Yeah--I take this to say i wouldn't look great if i'd just had a singleton.....in other words, i could look better :headbang: AND---our girls look drastically different, but we always hear "are they a boy and girl"? even had a lady argue-- 'but that looks like a boy!' Gee, thanks, lady! We ALSO had a girl arguing about who was older because she was bigger [by like 1/2 a pound---good GRIEF!!]...... STUPID people................
OMG! I laughed so hard at this I had tears coming down my face! :rotflmbo: Yes, I have b/g twins too and I frequently get the question about them being identical or fraternal even after it has been established that they are indeed a boy and a girl. Most of the time I'm polite about it and just say no or I will explain what identical really means. Once or twice though I've said, "I'm pretty sure if you looked in their diapers it's not identical!"
my standard answer to the "are they identical" of my b/g twins?..."not from the waist down"....(nevermind that my daughter is a brunette and my son a blonde)... the worst was when they were babies (and I realize that sometimes babies can nearly be genderless especially when dressed in green or yellow) they had these matching outfits from Little Me - Abby's was pink shorts and a white shirt that said "girl" and had a pink bunny on it and Ian's was blue shorts with a white shirt and blue bunny and said "boy" and people would STILL ask me if they were both boys?!?!?!?!?!
Yeah my friend a nurse asked a friend of mine if her b/g twins were Identical. I had to tease her. I think for most people when you say "Twins" it is just the next question that they are suppose to ask. Heather
