silly question about when to date your child's tooth. im keep track of the teeth coming in with dates, lol and i want to know when should i 'actually' count it. i see it a little (very little) but do i count it the day it 'cuts' or when it actually can be seen through the gums.

I don't think there's an official way to count teeth, it's just whatever you prefer. I never counted mine.

I always counted it as a new tooth when I could actually feel it.

My husband is a dentist & I felt silly asking him this but I really wanted to know too, haha! He told me that he gets asked this question A LOT by patients that are new moms and he tells them to count when you can feel a rough little bump when you rub it but he told me either way is ok, just it frustrates moms if you tell them that so he picked one.

wow, you've reminded me of how bad of a mom i've been, not keeping track of teeth or even the day they first walked... lol. i kept track of everything til they were about a month old, then everything was a whirlwind... lol.

I count it (or would count it if I were making a note) the day it cuts through the gum. That makes most sense to me as that seems to be when they stop having the teething pain (at least as much), when you can just see it through the gum they still have the hard work to do cutting it.

I don't think it makes a difference. It's a symmetrical image so if you are looking from in front (looking into the kids mouth) or from behind (if you were the kid with your mouth open) it is the same thing. Teeth are supposed (although in my experience they often don't) to come in in their pairs-that's why there's two of each number on the top and bottom.

I make it easy, I don't put dates I put how many months they are :)
