I just looked at the Mother of the Bride section on in IDress site. All I can say is :bad: so I completly understand why you don't want a dress like those.

I find the dresses you have picked to be more like a formal fundraiser than like a MOB. For me personally, if I were the bride I would find the color to be too close to white and a little bridal... So I would go with a darker silver or a different color.

I am a big fan of Watters and Watters, they design bride and bridesmaid dresses but some of the bridesmaids dresses may suit your purposes I like this one

I like the last two you've posted (is that #5 and #6??) The last one is my very favorite. I know you don't love a jacket, but I think the jackets on both of them add a little elegance and mother of the bride-ness that is needed. I think a little more conservative is the way to go so you don't risk out-shining the bride. They are all beautiful dresses, don't get me wrong, I just think an evening gown is a strange choice for the MOB.

I had a big black tie work event to attend with DH last year. I couldn't BELIEVE how difficult it was to find a dress! Either they were too prom dress-ish, or matronly, or revealing! I do not envy your position of trying to find just the right dress for the occasion. Some of the things out there are just  !

I still like the very first one you posted. Having seen you in a picture before, I think it will look great on you. LIke I said before the back of the dress does not bother me one bit and I think a lot of the other dresses would just look overwhelming on your tiny frame.

I just thought of another issue with the first dress. Aside from the length being an issue and perhaps losing style when it will be alterated for your height, I think the back will be even lower due to your height.

Nikki, this one is beautiful, but it honestly says more black tie "evening gown" than a mother of the bride gown. I think the low back in particular is throwing me. What does your daughter's wedding gown look like? I think as a rule of thumb, you want to make sure you are showing less skin as the MOB (although you don't need to go the matronly look either).

Aside from very mild sticker shock (eek!), I LOVE this dress. It's really, really beautiful. And I think it would shorten much better - both in the ease of hemming and in the style looking flattering on a petite woman. I think the first one is going to be a mess hemmed. :(

I also think this one, while not a "traditional" MOB dress, strikes me as more appropriate.

I don't care for the first one, but I think the second and third are lovely. They aren't matronly at all, but they play off that traditional MOB jacket look. But you could remove the jacket as well.

I ordered this dress to see if it would be possible to alter....my DD loved it & it was among the least expensive I could find. I did not have high hopes. It was delivered on Monday - it is absolutely gorgeous. It is darker silver than the photo, heavy, swhttp://myshoes.com/stuart-weitzman/glowicky/greyirly & very pretty. I was surprised at how well it fit - I expected it would be way too long - but I found a pair of very high heels, headed off to the seamstress - it needed to be hemmed a little over 2", the bodice & hips were prefect - because I am so short I had to have some nips & tucks taken in the mesh on the back to make it fit properly. Final choice:

    And the shoes:

Thanks for all your advice.....I decided to go in the direction Jessica wanted. I know it is not the typical MOB dress....but it suits my style, the bride is happy & I didn't re-mortgage the house to buy it.

I hope you share a picture of yourself in the dress. Great that your dd loved the dress you loved and it can be altered to fit you.

What are you girls wearing for the flower girl dresses?

I will post photos after the wedding - I will likely need direction though :)

My girls are wearing ivory dresses. The bodice has silver beading & pearls in a small flower shape, the straps and around the waist are rows of bugle beads. The skirt is very full, ballgown tulle. I found simple pearlized ivory Stride Rite Mary Janes - I haven't gotten their tiaras yet, but they are wearing their hair curly & long. Here are the dresses....but this is not a good photo - you can't even see the shape of the dress. They are very pretty & the girls loooove the ballgown skirt:

Jessica is wearing an ivory & silver mermaid shaped strapless gown with corset lacing in the back.

Thanks Kim - I am so happy for Jessica - her fiance is so wonderful. He is an only child, very devoted to his parents. He adores Jessica, is so sincere, an Eagle Scout, has his MS in pharmacology, is back in school for a Masters in Physical Therapy & is very handsome. Jessica has finished her OT degree, done her clinicals & takes her board exam this month. They are a precious couple - very devoted, animal loving, adventure lovers. They are sailing alone through the Carribbean for their honeymoon - nerve wracking for me but exciting & romantic for them. Then they are moving back to Galveston for his schooling, to be close to his parents in Houston & just a few hours from the girls & me.
