My girls will be 11 months old in a few days. Can I give them lunch meat? Or do I need to stear clear of it because of the lysertia (sp?) like when I was pregnant?

    Thanks!

I would put a call in to your pedi and ask about it. I know I didn't give mine lunch meat at 11 months but I had a hard time getting mine to accept textures until after they were a year old.

I don't know for sure, but I would think that babies would be considerably more susceptible to something like listeria, so I would probably steer clear for awhile longer.

I was just trying to not have to go to the store today in the rain, and that is the only protein we have in the house that is easy to eat at the moment. I will skip on giving it to them for a bit longer. I guess we have an adventure today!

Prepackaged lunch meat isn't at risk for lysteria, it's the opened stuff in the deli counter that's susceptible. (according to my ped) So if you have the prepackaged stuff I would give them some today and avoid the trip in the rain! :D

The listeria outbreak last year was in prepackaged lunch meat. :pardon:

We have it from the deli counter. But the rain has let up to a sprinkle- so hopefully it will be like that by the time the girls wake up from their nap!

I don't give lunch meat to my 14 month olds, but that's because I don't think it's all that nutritious. Most lunch meat has nitrates, a known carcinogen, although you might be able to find nitrate-free lunch meat. Lunch meat is also high in sodium. They will be okay with no protein for one day.

oh, good points on the nitrates.

    Thank you.

Cook it. My ob/gyn always told me that cooked lunch meat is fine. Yeah, it won't get rid of the nytrates though!
