LO's are still coughing/runny nose

i called the pedi the other day and they said its to be expected. this is day 12 for one LO and who knows with the other one, lol.
he said to continue the liquid albuterol/vistaril mix and the robitussin.

OBVIOUSLY IT IS NOT WORKING!

thoughts? would getting a nebulizer help?

 

Sometimes colds can take up to 2 weeks to clear up, and sometimes the cough can linger for months.

As long as they are eating well, and not excessivly miserable, I would say just keep following the dr's orders. :hug:

 

If they are eating, feeling okay, no fever or other concerns, I would give the cough/runny nose a little while longer to clear up. The cough & the runny nose from any type of virus can take quite awhile to clear up. How does the cough sound? Is it sounding better or worse than it was before?

 

cough sounds the same; its just not as frequent!
one LO did not even touch his bottle at 2. eating at 11 was a fight, too.

i called my pedi and they want me to come in? i asked her about a nebulizer and she said she needs to see if they're wheezing.

doc said no wheezing and that they should just continue their liquid albuterol.
apparently they are on the mend.

of course when we were there no one's noses were runny and no one coughed. hahahaah!

 

I guess I don't understand why/what liquid albuterol is for. I've only ever experienced it for mine as an inhaler or for a nebulizer. Does it work for the same thing in the same way? (to open up their lungs/airway). I always thought that had to be inhaled and brought into the airway/lungs to work, but that's all we've ever been given. I don't know why she'd want you to do the oral version, but not the inhaled version.

When Abby had RSV, it took her almost 3 weeks to fully be over it. She was in the hospital for 3 of those days getting oxygen and neb treatements and an IV b/c she wasn't taking in enough. Whatever has gone around this past month has been really nasty here as well. The kids all had cold that took almost 3 weeks to get over and they still have a lingering cough. One needed antibiotics for a double ear infection/sinus infection and I needed antibiotics as well. It just took a really long time for everyone to get over it. I think this time of year, all the resistant stuff is going around. I always say as long as the noses are running at least it's coming out. It's when they are so congested and it's blocked that they can't get anything out is when mine are more miserable. I hope they start to feel better soon.

 

Unfortunately, nothing but time is gonna clear up the runny nose and RSV is notorious for a hacking cough for WEEKS after the illness goes away. At this point it is probably better to let them cough. RSV causes lots of mucous and airway inflammation and all that gook has to get out or be slowly reabsorbed. Suppressing the cough with robitussin will likely just slow things down! To the pp who asked, liquid albuterol has been around since before they invented inhalers and has been nearly phased out of modern practice. Another option you have that is safe is to try benadryl instead of the albuterol/vistaril. Feel free to PM me if you are interested in dosing instructions

The advice being given was to trade one OTC med for another and to maybe scale back on the use of prn (as needed) medication. She was never told to stop a prescription and since a virus has to run its course anyway, there is no medication that is going to cure it or make it go away faster, hence the advice to scale back on pumping medications into her kids that don't seem to be helping. I would think that anyone knows that TS is not liable and to add that disclaimer into a discussion kind of insults everyone's intelligence. Although I do have a medical license the advice I gave was on OTC medication and is no different than the advice someone would find on Web MD or the AAP website.

 

Maybe I'm confused... you said to try Benadryl(OTC) instead of Albuterol (Prescription). Maybe I'm reading it incorrectly, but that is how it sounded. I'm not trying to insult anyone's intelligence and certainly not trying to offend.
