I know I've asked this before. But I'm STILL wracking my brain about it.

They have a small room, currently with 2 cots in, one daughter, her feet are touching the end of the cot. I'm just so nervous about getting beds in. Will they constantly get out of bed because there are no longer any bars? (they can easily climb out now and I don't mind, we put a mattress on the floor between the cots just in case but they've never fallen...)

If we get beds with storage beneath, they will be higher up, will they fall out? Do we have to keep that mattress on the floor? How BIG is a toddler bed? What are the size dimensions?

I certainly don't want bunk beds till they are older as jumping is certainly popular in this apartment!

We don't have enough room for two twin beds :(

They are 3 years and 3 months old now.

I don't know measurements but the toddler beds I have seen use a baby crib mattress and are very low to the floor. What about a twin sized trundle bed that you could push the trundle back in when they are not using it? You could get a bed rail for the top bed. That way they have their own beds, but the top bed is not as high as a bunk bed.

My girls had a teeny tiny room before we switched bedrooms and the toddler beds fit really well in there. Toddler beds use crib matresses, so really that don't take up much more room than a crib would. I don't know the dimensions, but toddler beds were our only option in that room and I could still fit a dresser in there, so it worked well for us. At their age, I really don't think you will have much of a problem switching them and think that either just matresses on the floor or toddler beds will probably work.

If your kids are too big for cribs, they will be too big for toddler beds, since those are almost the same size. Your best bet might be twin mattresses on the floor, since that would take up less room than two twin beds with frames.

A captain's bed with lots of storage underneath would certainly be higher than a regular twin bed, but you can also just get plastic bins that slide under the bed, and you can use those with a regular twin.

Falling out was not a problem for us, though I worried about it a lot beforehand. We kept the crib mattresses beside their beds for a few months, but they only fell out the first two nights (plus one freak occurrence with Sarah several months later, which she mostly slept through).

If they can climb out of their cribs now, getting out of bed constantly will probably not be a problem. If anything, it will be less of a problem because getting out of bed is not as exciting as climbing out of a crib.

I am not sure they even make these anymore nor do I know how safe they are but what about the beds that are attached to the wall, that you can pull down when it's bedtime and put back up so they have more room to play.

I know someone when I was little that had one and they loved it. You can adjust it to any height you feel is safe for them.

They make them - they're called Murphy beds. I've never seen them except custom made, but you might be able to find one online. I wouldn't think safety would be an issue as long as they were mounted properly.

We moved my girls to twin beds when they were 2.5, and we haven't had a single problem with them falling out of the bed...

Space wise - I would maybe suggest either the Trundle, or the murphy bed (as another poster did)

I'm actually considereing a bunk bed (they are just now 3 years and 1 month old) but I would do a couple of things: 1) get the bunk bed with trundle option so they can use the trundle now, upper bunk later (so no mattress on the upper bunk to begin with) 2) put a safety rail the entire length of the upper bunk to ensure no one falls out, and just take the ladder away during the day so they can't even climb up there to jump. :)

My girls are in 2 captains beds(with drawers underneath)they are actually lower than a normal bed because we have bunky boards and foam mattresses instead of box springs and mattress. I still have 2 dressers in the room. I actually have the girls in the master bedroom and me in the regular bedroom.

Wow, thank you so so much for the advice, I never knew toddler beds were same size as cribs!! That's crazy!! We will now seriously consider the Murphy beds and the trundle bed.

What about just one bed and they share ? Heck it has been done for many years when that was all they had back then. Say a double mattress on the floor and when they get used to that put it in a bed. Make sure you get a double mattress protector though for accidents. Eventually what is new becomes old and they will settle down and sleep.

This is exactly what we did. The girls started out with a double on the floor. We then moved them to a double bed after about 4 or 6 months. We actually did have two mattresses, as their room is big enough .... but they preferred sleeping together. So now we have just one bed in their bedroom that they share. They've been sharing like this for about 2.5 years now! I need to update my siggy. They're 4 3/4.
