I know it's a few months away, but I'm already wondering what an appropriate gift for a 2 yr old would be. Are tricycles too big for this age, or what age do they start trikes? Any ideas are appreciated. Thanks.

It will be a long time for us until they turn two, but we plan to buy a play kitchen.

A lot of people do play kitchens but we chose to hold off and not get them much since it was right after xmas. So we're getting them a playset for the backyard. I'm not sure about trikes but mine aren't ready for them yet, not to mention we just don't have the room for them to ride. Oh mine LOVE the trampoline so that's another idea.

I read that the minimum age for a Big Wheel is 3, but I'm not sure about tricycles. I think there's one from One Step Ahead that starts out as a push-bike, and converts to a tricycle.

I've got 6 months to decide, but I'm going back and forth between a play kitchen, doll house, or splurging on a Rainbow Recreation jungle gym. We have a RR site at the end of our road so maybe they'd give us a break on shipping/setup. :pardon: My guys' birthday is in August so it's very appealing to get them a gift that they can use outside. I know they're kind of young for it, but they will certainly grow into it.

Your girls' b-day is in June, but you're in Dallas so you might not want them outside then! I think a dollhouse or play kitchen would give them many hours of enjoyment. :D

I think you'll be shocked at how much they've grown into it just by the time they are 2! I'm daily shocked at the difference between 18 months and 2. My babies are like big kids now. :( I think the playset would be a great gift for 2 year olds (that said, the play kitchen and a Little People house have also been BIG hits at our house).

I can tell you that a play kitchen is a huge hit here! I am waiting for the weather to get nicer before I think about tricycles. My kids also love My Pal Scout & Violet...where ever L&S go, so do Scout and Violet.

Our gift will probably be big kid beds since we'll be moving right around that time. Maybe we'll also get them a few cheapy toys also.

We picked up a play kitchen off craigslist a couple of weekends ago and they boys are having a ton of fun with it. I want to get some more play food stuff but when I went to TRU they all said 3 and up and they had a lot of little pieces and my boys still put everything in their mouth - so I am going to wait a bit on that. They cant quite reach everything, but they will eventually. We also got them a little table and chairs from Ikea and they love those too - now if I can only keep them from climbing on top of the table!

We got some nice Melissa and Doug food sets - just fruits and veggies. They are basically life size, so no choking hazard (although I might watch the strawberries!)

I recommend buying a kitchen. Mine have this one: http://www.step2.com/product.cfm?product_id=1402

Mine got theirs for Christmas and they play in it everyday! It was recommended by a fellow twin mum on this site and it´s worth every cent!

My ILs are going to buy them a playhouse for their 2nd birthday. They got so much for Christmas that I´m at a loss!

I don't have that one, but I have the one fruit set from Lakeshore Learning, and those are great--although my boys have tried to eat them because they really do look real.

They would be great accessories for the play kitchen, too.

One thing I really do want to get them is puzzles. Those are great for their cognitive and motor development.

We got them a play kitchen for Christmas and they love it. I'm thinking of getting them a picnic table for outside and maybe an outside playhouse.

    Here's what's on my list!

    Outdoor Playhouse

    Art Table/Table and Chairs

An easel for art projects--not if we get the art table though!

Mine inherited a kitchen from their cousins and LOVE theirs!

Mine are getting DD's play kitchen that's been at my parents house. So they've never seen it before. It will be new to them. I'm sure we'll get another shopping cart and some food to go with it. And I'm thinking tricycles from one of the grandparents. I really don't need to get them anything. And maybe I'll hold back this year. But it's doubtful.

The birthday is still about half a year away, but we are saving up for the "Step 2 neat & tidy cottage." You should check out the Step 2 website for lots of other play house alternatives.

What I like about it is that it is gender neutral (and wouldn't look horrendous if we keep it in the livingroom, haha).

It isn't too girly, as most "houses" are. Also, it isn't as pricey as the others.

And the CAT 3-in-1 ride on dump truck (two of these, of course!) is on the list as well.

We just had the girls birthday party today. It was a zoo, but lots of fun. We gave the girls mini bikes the ones that are 2 wheel bikes with training wheels with 10" wheels they were a hit. All the kids tried them out from 2 to just over 18 months.

The other hit around here is a princess play tent with a crawl though tunnel and a play kitchen.

I also recommend a play kitchen if you don't have one. Mine got it for Christmas (well, really 2 weeks beforehand) and still play with it, although they like the dishes/playfood the best.

A couple things I bought second-hand so gave them in the last two weeks that are big hits are Mr Potato head and wooden cubes.

Otherwise for their birthday they're getting a doll (if it gets here on time... otherwise they'll get it when it gets here), some doll baby bottles, a doll cradle, a twin dolls playset, a doll stroller, a Geotrax set (the portable one, they don't get tracks yet), a doodle, an aquadoodle, some puzzles, another Mr Potato head set, a couple plush toys, and two interactive plush toys (like Violet and Scout but with more options). Ok it sounds like a lot but I got most of it on clearance at Target after Christmas...

These are great ideas. Mine love their new mini-trampoline. They've had the play kitchen for a while but have a new interest in it, putting food in a basket, saying they're going shopping. They love this little radio flyer trike that has no pedals, they ride it all over the house. They love pushing strollers with their dolls or stuffed animals inside. My son's favorite is definitely his Thomas the Train set (we got a starter set). My daughter also got a little wooden dollhouse, and they're both starting to "play house" which is really cute to see. They got light-up toothbrushes from some friends and those have been a hit! Also they love all sorts of wooden puzzles, with shapes, animals, etc. My dad made them some puzzles of their names which I thought would be way too hard and now they can do it no problem. They do change SO much within just a couple of months. Oh, they also like their ball pit but I don't know how much longer that will be fun, maybe another 6 months? I think it's all about putting toys away and then getting them out later--it's like getting a whole new toy!

We got them a play kitchen for Christmas. They love it! They especially love the metal dishes, and play food. My mom got this desk for them for Christmas, oh my goodness, they love that thing!! My link

They got a lot of stuff for Christmas, and they will get some toys from other people for their b-day plus we are trying to scale back on some things so we can pay some stuff off. So we got my son the Chuck and friends truck. My son always stops in his tracks and watches that commercial when it comes on. He loves it! We let him hold it in the store, and he grins from ear to ear. We got my daughter a trunk of dress up accessories. It says 3+, but I think she will really love it. She's a very girly girl, and if there are some things that are small enough to eat, I'll put them up. I wanted to get them a little trampoline because they love the trampolines in gymnastic class, but we probably won't get that now. We also thought about that roller coaster for kids. I read lots of good reviews on that. It is just too pricey for us right now, plus we have our house on the market, and we don't know if it will sell since the contract is up after their b-day. So I got them some 2T clothes, and I want to get them a swimming pool.
