Tried cereal today, went pretty good

We did a somewhat successful cereal feed today. Yay for us! I read the best time to do it is when they are happy and hungry. That kind of backfired. We started to feed it to my one daugher about 1/2 hr before she was due for her bottle and she just got pissed off. I sensed she thought we were teasing her with it and she was obviously not being satisfied with the small amount she was getting. (She's at the point now where if you take her bottle away half way through a feed to burp she gets mad, so we only burp her at the end now.) So we stopped and gave her the bottle. So our other daughter, we gave it to an hour before her bottle and that seemed a bit better. They both took some more after their bottles. Really I just wanted them to try it and see, not like they are consuming enough today to make them full.

So if I want to start giving it to them in the evenings, when do I do this?? I'm confused. Do I feed them before or after their bottle at bedtime?? And should there be time between the bottle and cereal or at the same time?? :thanks:

I always gave it to them after the bottle and I did not do dinner solids after the last botle of the day. Do you give them a bottle around 3 or 4? I'd give them solids after that bottle, about 30 minutes to an hour later.

I give solids 15 minutes after they nurse or 30 minutes after a bottle. We also had better luck doing solids earlier in the day when we started because the evenings are cranky time!

I would definitely give solids after milk (30-60 minutes later). Breast milk/formula is what they really need during the first 12 months of life. When we first started we gave solids in the afternoon. Good luck!

Thanks everyone. I'll try doing it after the bottle then, about a 1/2 hrs seems to be the consensus. I'm not in a huge hurry to make this an everyday event right now, and wont be starting any other solids for quite a while I think. My pedi said try anywhere from 4-6 months so we will take it slow :)
