My guys love to "read" books (page through board books and point out the pictures), but they have certain ones that they beg for us to read them at bed time. "Goodnight Moon" is their favorite (Nate runs to the stairs and says "moon" repeatedly when it's bedtime). They also like a book called "Dig Dig Digging" that's all about trucks and diggers (boys! ). They don't seem to have as much patience for books with "stories" per se, but really enjoy ones with a good rhythm or cadence, and bright pictures.

I need to get out of the Goodnight Moon/Diggers rut for my own sanity, and am looking for suggestions. What are your LOs favorite bedtime books? :)

I read two different ones for bedtime... I Love You Mommy and I Love You Daddy... very cute about daddy bear and little bear and mommy bear. Mine love to imitate the sounds of the bee when I buzz on that page. and they sign "fish" when its the page on the bear fishing... pretty cute. both of these have stories, and are quite cute for night time.

We have a couple of books by a certain author. I can't find the books right now but it was a hit for the twins at that age. The one I am thinking about takes place on a ship goes like this:

pajamas, big and small..... on the way up to exercise.... rock, rock rock to sleep. Sorry.. perhaps someone here will recognize it and share the author! I recommend any book by that author!

My boys love "Who Says Moo?" a book that my grandma got them from the dollar store about a baby cow looking for friends. They want to read it ALL the time.
The other one they like is "Bubbles Bubbles" with Elmo and friends.

Oh yes, The Going to Bed Book by Sandra Boynton!! They do love these too; maybe I need to force the issue and read 'em this when they're begging for "moooooon". ;)

Until recently mine were into anything with bright pictures and only 1 sentence per page. Any longer than a sentence and they'd lose interest. I pick them up a Little Golden book every time I go to the grocery store and see one they don't have. Their favorites are: Come Back Zack, Little Mommy, oh and this one about Xmas has been their favorite for 2 years now, I have to hide it at the top of their closet b/c they try to rip the pages out. It's called "A Star So Bright, A Christmas Tale."

In the last month they have started to actually stay in their beds and just listen to a story, without even seeing the pictures.

Our copy of "Brown bear, brown bear, what do you see?" has been read so many times I can recite the entire story without looking at the pages!

I love Sandra Boynton. She's a new discovery for us. My favorite is But Not the Hippopotumus. I get warm fuzzies at the part where it says, "But YES the Hippopotumus!"

We are also Sandra Boyton fans - I recommend "Pajama Time!" and "Barnyard Dance" (but not for bed time). My kids also like "Freight Train" and "Inside Freight Train". We have one my older son enjoys - "Goodnight Gecko" and "Angels" for bedtime. We know all these by heart - even at nearly 4 yr - my son wants the same 2-3 books every single night.

    enjoy! Sheri

Another Sandra Boynton fan here! Hop on Pop is another favorite (actually we have to replace it since DD tore it to shreds), Llama Llama Red Pajama, Olivia (any of the Olivia books are hits here), Apple Trouble, Kitty Cat Kitty Cat Where Are You?, Goodnight Moon is another favorite- we had two copies and both kids tore them to shreds :faint: The Mixed Up Alphabet is another favorite.

My boys are HUGE Eric Carle fans-since they were babies. I'm not sure if Brown Bear, Brown Bear is even still together! Their latest favorite is Panda Bear, Panda Bear. It's amazing to see Nicholas "read" the book. I love it! He looks at the pictures and says, "I see spider monkey. " "I see turtle." LOVE it! And I love when he gets to the end and it's the sleeping child...He comes up to me with his finger over his mouth and barely a whisper says, "sleeping child." SO sweet!

For Christmas, the boys got this Elmo book-with a piano. LOVE LOVE LOVE it. They play the song and then sing along. So every night we go to bed, it's "Panda Bear, Elmo BOOK!" Whatever you say boys...

My boys also loved "My Car." That one is barely together as well. I can recite that off the top of my head as I type. Very quick and easy. And at the end, the bus beeps-as do the boys bellies! ;)

"Sometimes I Like to Curl Up In a Ball" is a favorite here - can't remember who the author is though.

Well, I tried Pajama Time last night; they seemed to dig it, but as soon as it was done Nate started crying "moon, moooon" so we had to read Goodnight Moon again. :gah:

They normally love to be read to, no matter what the book, but at bedtime I guess they're very particular. :pardon:

I'm going to put a list together of some of your suggestions and go to the bookstore soon. Maybe something else will catch their fancy. Thanks for all the great suggestions! :)

Sheep in A Jeep is a big favorite around here. We also just got Gossie and Gertie, which is pretty cute. I Love You Stinky Face is both funny and touching (and 100x less creepy then I'll Love You Forever).

Thank you to those who came up with the author & books. We had "But not the hippopotimus" but it disappeared.. along with the going to bed book.
What is also important to state is that you don't have to read the book. Just point out some of the pictures on each page!

I'm laughing out loud that someone else thinks "I'll Love You Forever" is creepy...I concur!

My kiddos LOVE the Usborne touch-and-feel books "That's Not My Puppy" and "That's Not My Tractor" are two faves! "Hooray for Fish" is another fave...the pictures alone are what they love! Finally another Boynton fan...our faves are "Personal Penguin" "Fifteen Animals" and "The Belly Button Book."

My girls LOVE Bubbles, Bubbles! They love pretty much all the Sesame Street books because they rhyme and we like to make them into songs and sing to them. They love Eyes, Nose, Fingers, and Toes, Big and Little, and any books with pictures like My First Colors book.

I was able to “redirect” from our good night moon addiction w/ run away bunny (same author and artist)… and I point out the picture above the old lady whispering “hush” in goodnight moon is mommy bunny fishing in a trout stream for her baby bunny… but sadly they get hyped up pretending to run away… but I also have got them to eat more carrots as a result… I say let’s be bunnies and eat more carrots… and oddly they fell for it  .

i cant even talk about love you forever :sorry:

    great post

We all love the Boynton books, & Eric Carle (cannot tell you how many little fingers have poked out the holes in "The Hungry Catepillar"); but the current bedtime favourite is a book called "Goodnight Gorilla". Their other favourite, and one that has sparked a total obsession with bellies (even lifting up the shirts of relative srangers... ), is "Tums", by David Bedford. It is a totally cute, easy to read rhyming book & I love it too!!!

We are working on the entire collection of Sandra Boynton books. If you ever get hold of an Australian author named " Mem Fox" she is INCREDIBLE. My favourite of her's are "Ten little fingers and ten little toes", "Where is the green sheep?", and many others. She teaches reading to school teachers all over the world. A fantastic author !
