What are the symptoms and how did you find out your child had it?

My girls were not officially diagnosed with reflux, but after they had been on regular formula for about 2 weeks we noticed that more often than not they had a lot of spit up after their feedings. Their food would just pour back out of their mouths. They were gaining weight and never seemed like they were in any pain, but we were concerned about the spit up so the pedi suggested switching to Enfamil AR and that totally solved the problem. After we switched to AR we didn't even have to put bibs on them anymore, there was zero spit up.

The symptoms are, spitting up to the point where you need to change their cloths because they are soaked, no or very little weight gain, not sleeping, fightinh feedings, and going red faced while eating, really fussy when in a laying down position, they do better reclined. Hope this helps, good luck

Spitting up, arching their backs, crying in pain, refusing to eat, lessening amounts of feedings, fussiness during and after feedings, eating a couple of oz's and then pulling off, not gaining weight.

The only symptom my daughter had was hysterical crying. She's probably more in the category of "silent reflux" since she didn't necessary spit up more or have the other symptoms, but it was very obvious that she was in pain after she ate. Since going on Zantac- the crying has stopped and she is like a completely different baby. We didn't do any testing for it. After trying some of the suggested things like keeping her upright after eating (which didn't help) her doctor gave her the prescription based on her symptoms

Arching his back, getting stiff and screaming; waking up sceaming; groaning and hunched over in his sleep; projectile vomit through his mouth and nose; large amounts of vomit/spit up; nose gurgles from the spit up that went into his nose. Switched to Alimentum and no more reflux/pain, just regular painless spit up in small amounts. And he is gaining weight better. Doc suspects allergy to milk.

Same symptoms we had with both of our. First one that was diagnosed was at 3 weeks, second was just about a week later... We did rice in the cereal with one and the other we had to switch to nutramigen along with a trial of medications till we found the ones that worked. Axid for one and a combination of Prevacid and Carafate for the other. Good luck!!

Brandon had silent reflux and while he occasionally spit up usually it was more a case of "wet burps" (where it didn't come all the way up). He would also cry while taking a bottle, was constantly hoarse, coughed a lot, and was just generally very cranky. We started thickening his formula and the doctor prescribed 15mg Prevacid solutabs once a day and he has been fine since.

No spitting up here...just "silent reflux" We basically had screaming when laid down, stiffening up after feeds, funky 'gulping' sounds, pushing away from the breast after feeding for a few minutes. Went on Zantac at 4 weeks which worked great until recently, switched to prevacid 2 weeks ago when he started refusing bottles. Never needed any special formula but he is mostly on breastmilk. Good luck figuring it out!

I had a "silent reflux" baby as well - no sptting up or pulling off the breast or bottle, but she would be unable to lie down for about 2 hours after a feed, & would scream her poor head off - not just fussy cries, but genuine, "in pain" screams. They were awful to hear  The only way she could sleep was in the Baby Bjorn strapped to me during the day, or on our chest while we were sitting upright on the couch at night. It was awful. We mentioned it to our Paed at the girl's 8 week appt, & she gave us Ranitidine (Zantac). It took about 2 weeks to work, but for us it was a miracle drug - our little girl was able to sleep (although with the matress inclined), & we could finally sleep too. (Well, as much as you can when you are BFing twins every 3 hours! ) Because the symptoms were pretty consistent (although much worse at night, especially after the midnight feed) & resolved completely with medications, we were given the official "reflux" diagnosis. But we never really had a problem with spitting up or weight gain. Her sister never had a problem with reflux at all.

Fiona came off the ranitidine at about 9 months of age, & we have never looked back.

Thanks, I'm thinking he probably doesn't have reflux and it more of an overactive letdown problem. Blake loves to nurse and does it very well, but I do hear a lot of gulping, his face turns red as a tomato and he spits up quite a bit most days. I have been trying to hand express a little milk before latching him on and taking him off the breast to burp several times during a feeding, problem is I can never usually get a burp out of the little guy and then he spits up. He often sounds congested but I'm thinking that is from his spitting up. On a few different occasions he has spit up a LOT where it came out of his nose and mouth and that was very scary for me but on all of those occasions he had nursed for a LONG time and I know he got way more milk than he needed. I've mentioned this to his Pedi but he didn't seem concerned at all, he said he's gaining beautifully and is the picture of health so he isn't worried about his spitting up. I do believe my oldest DD had reflux even though she didn't spit up a ton, she HATED to eat and refused although she still gained normally but magically right at the time she started solids she started sucking down the bottles no problem.
