    Hi,

This is my third posting as a result of our 6 month pedi appointment...

Our LO's can roll over back to belly and belly to back, though both prefer to do it back to belly and then cry to be turned over no matter how long we leave them to do it themselves. But our pedi suggested that they are "delayed" because they are not "log rolling," turning over and over and over. One problem is space, we have hardwood floors and an extremely tiny apartment and even with play gyms and play mats space is limited. But otherwise they just don't seem interested. But like my PP, since it is a problem in BOTH babies (verses one baby's personality or physical development - they are very different), I assume I could be doing something better. Any ideas? Thanks!!

Sorry but I'd never heard of log rolling. If they can roll from back to front and front to back then I don't see what difference it makes if they can roll like a log?

I would say that most of my babies never logrolled. I think one of them might have, but I'm not sure about that. Anyway, I have never heard of that being listed as a milestone & all of my kids are perfectly fine & none were delayed in any way by not logrolling. As long as they can roll over both ways, I wouldn't worry.

One of mine "log rolls" all over the place. I can put her down and in 5 seconds she is across the room - rolling away like a log.

My other one doesn' roll over at all, so we have PT for her, but if they are rolling at all I would just hold off for a little longer.

This says it the best for me.

I don't like your pedi. I am not a doctor, but you are not a "merchandize in the assembly line" either, so even if she/he is concerned she/he should find a better way to let you know what you should try in order to improve the situation.

I've also never heard of log rolling being a milestone. And I have 4 kids. My oldest ds never "log rolled", my oldest dd did, but she just loved to roll everywhere. The twins didn't start that until just before they crawled, and they used it as a means of getting somewhere or to something they wanted. ;)

Neither of mine ever really did that. They didn't have much interest in rolling at all. They only started doing it a lot around the same time they started to sit up, because it helped them get to a sitting position from whatever position I put them down in.

Unless you know for sure that your child has some sort of a delay, I'm not a big believer in "teaching" or helping babies to learn to move in various ways. You can encourage them to move in general by holding toys just out of their reach, or whatever, but babies have been learning to move and walk just fine for thousands of years without someone teaching them each specific skill.

I agree. I've never heard of that being a milestone. Most of my children have not done this to any great extent or for an extended period of time and they're all fine. I think your pedi is making a big deal out of nothing at this point.

Okay, I am so not a fan of your Pedi! A doctor that gets upset at you for not getting your babies to drink water, gives you a unvariable timetable of solids and says your babies are delayed for not doing something most babies never do ... I'd dump him/her myself! My boys never log-rolled and are just fine with all their milestones. Sometimes babies will log-roll _instead_ of crawling, but not usually both. You should not have to deal with coming home from a well-baby apt with all sorts of invented anxieties and 'to-do's! :aggressive:

I'm with everyone else. I've never heard of that term and I can tell you that NONE of my kids EVER did it. It is not a milestone. I am not a fan of your ped. either!

I have never heard of logrolling. My kids never did it. Part of the issue may be space for us, too. We live in a small split-level town home. I wouldn't worry! Mine are on track with all of their milestones.

Just an aside, I'm wondering if I'm the only one that clicked on this topic thinking it was about constipation... :pardon:

Anyway, you can add me to the list of those that have never heard of log rolling. My DD rolled everywhere for a while, but only to get places, and she usually paused to chew on her foot or something between rolls, or to make sure someone was paying attention to her.

If your LOs are rolling back to belly and belly to back, then it seems to me they are just fine. I wouldn't worry, and might start shopping around for a new pedi.

Add me to the list of people that don't like your pedi...

"Delayed"? I am almost certain that your babies are absolutely not! Specially when they are rolling both ways.

He is strange  ..... because I've never heard of that term, although I do know that some babies do this, but as far as I understand that is definitely not one of the skills/milestones ever evaluated.

Mine never did and my son is almost crawling. I'll take that over "log rolling"

My boys are only a few months old, but my oldest only started rolling from belly to back and back to belly AT 6 months of age. I dont think they are delayed at all. I dont ever recall Donevan log rolling to be honest.

Melissa!!!!! I don't mean to be disrespectful, but get a new pedi ASAP! My LOs could roll over but barely ever did more than a handful of times. One is walking. You shouldn't worry - they will do things at their own pace. LOve their names BTW.

My thoughts: When you say your pedi "suggested" they may be "delayed" - are you perhaps reading too much into to everything your pedi says? (for example, he/she says "some kids do x at this age" and you hear "your babies are behind!")

I ask this because if not, i.e., if you can honestly say you are not reading too much into it and your pedi is really suggesting these things, then I think you need to SWITCH your pediatrician. To me, your pedi sounds unsupportive (if I'm being generous) and even flat-out wrong (if I'm being harsh). I do not claim to be an expert but I've done quite a bit of reading, and what your pedi is telling you is bizarre (I read this post as well as the other one about solids).

Sorry if I am harsh. Again, maybe you're trying to be super-mom and taking everything your pedi says to an extreme or putting some kind of filter on what you hear. But if you're honestly telling us verbatim what your pedi is saying, I would get OUT of there - life is too short to be taking advice from someone who is making you doubt yourself and giving you advice that seems to be off the mark. I respect the ladies on here, and I think many of us are thinking the same thing.... Being a parent is hard, you definitely need a pediatrician you can rely on to give you SOUND advice and SUPPORT and to keep you focused on the important things instead of getting you worked up about non-issues.

(to answer your post, which I think others did as well - log rolling is not a real milestone that I have ever heard about. And, my DS is 5.5 months and is just now rolling over one way (not even close to both ways, like a log), and I'm not worried at all and neither is my pedi.) My DD can and does roll like a log. Doesn't worry me either : - ) Now, if she had POOPS that looked like logs... that I would worry about!

Wow, I guess my girls are/were delayed and I never knew it  My girls never really rolled much and certainly never "log rolled"! It really depends on your doctor, I don't think my doctor even asked that question, it was more about rolling over from belly to back. It may be a space issue but not having that "skill" won't hurt them at all...
