sympathy crying?

Hi all- this is my first post, but I've been reading topics from time to time and it's nice to know other mom's are going through what I am My girls are three months and lately they have been doing a lot more sympathy crying (one has an issue and the other cries just because her sister is). It's pretty hard to get both soothed at the same time and I wondered if other babies do this and if it tapered off at some point.

 

I've heard this happens even in the hospital with girls-a study showed girls are more likely to empathize with other crying little girls. As I have boys, it doesn't happen very often here. But when it does, I try to pick up the original crier & get them to stop. It usually stops the other sympathetic baby. Occasionally I go into another room while I'm calming him down. I find a really loud "shh!" in their ears (mimics the womb) usually works pretty well.

At 10 months my girls do this but only if one gets really upset which is not too often. At that age though I had a lot of crying in this house...eek! It wasn't as easy to sooth them together as they were more wiggly. I remember this dissipating around the time I could sit them in bumbos or boppies on the floor and entertain them both more interactively, around 4 mos or a little later. In the crying department those first few weeks were very very hard - hang in there.

 

Yes, our boys do this. They are 15 months and it has not stopped. The only thing that works sometimes is to each have a person grab one and take into different rooms.

 

Silly girls :FIFblush: Mine does that when her brother cries for more than 1 min. She always cries. On the other hand, my boy just looks stunned at his sister and turn away whenever she cries.
