When did you wean off the paci?

Just wondering when everyone starting taking the paci away????

 

Haven't done it yet. I had hoped to do it by 2, but it didn't happen and I honestly don't see it happening for a while.

ETA: My paci user only gets it in her crib and in her carseat though.

 

i voted before 1 year although that's not really accurate - my girls never really took to their pacis. which was so frustrating sometimes! :headbang: although it was hard in the beginning, maybe we "lucked out" & avoided a headache now? :unknw:

 

I voted before one year too, because like PP mine didn't really get into pacifiers and didn't take them. I was grateful for not having to break the habit or worry about them at bedtime, but there were definitely times that I wish they had liked them!!!

 

I voted for after 2. My girls get them when they sleep and that's it. But they are pretty dependent on them and I don't think I'll work on weaning until I'm out of school. They'll be 25 months when school let's out and I can focus on it.

 

I wasn't sure I'd be able to take the poll since my dd still has her paci but I could I'm not taking it away until she can understand giving it away... Maybe in 6 months or so but it's not a battle I'm willing to face yet. None of my boys took a paci just her so this is new to me. She only has it in her crib or on long car trips.

 

I didn't vote... ours are 20 months and still use them in the crib for nap & night time. not sure when I'll attempt to get rid of them...

 

Nate took a paci for something like 2 weeks; Jack had his for a few months. Both of them started spitting them out very early on, so we didn't use them past 4-5 months.

BUT I have a die-hard thumb sucker in Jack, and we'll just have to see how that plays out. :unknw:

 

Mine still love theirs and I don't think we'll be taking them away any time soon.

 

We haven't weaned yet, but we will before age 1.

Marlee doesn't even care for hers one bit. She just chooses to sit in her boppy and knead her hands and look around...she doesn't even want it hardly ever. It might go in for a few seconds, but she seems more annoyed at it and could care less that she just spit it out.

Merrick just uses it some during the day and doesn't use it while sleeping or fuss really. This kid just eats and sleeps

 

We did it at 11 months. I got an Elmo doll that Ellie fell in love with and I said why don't we try not giving her the binky and we never looked back. She was totally fine with it. I was shocked. Now, if we could get Abby to stop sucking her thumb...

 

I voted after 2 years (since she was getting close to 3 when we did it). But if I ever have another paci baby, it will go away at 12 months with the bottle. It was rough at 2y9m!

We did cut it down to just naptime and bedtime at 15 months though.

 

I think mine were 22 months old. I just took it away and never turned back. They asked for it for a couple of days and then stopped. I knew they didn't need it anymore b/c sometimes they would sleep without it.

 

Both of my boys took a paci when they were tiny. They both gave them up on their own around 6 months. Jack refused to take it anymore and James found his thumb. Like a pp said, at least with a paci you can take it away, but I know we'll have issues when he needs to stop sucking his thumb.

 

I have no vote, b/c my boys have been off the paci since they were little over 1 month old...after being in the hospital for nearly a month they were on paci's then, but when they came home within the 1st week neither of them would take it. so am glad for that..

 

I didn't vote - my two still take a paci but only in the crib and for car trips. I cannot imagine life without it, though!!

 

I didn't vote because we're still on them, but I'm curious to read all the replies. My girls are 13 months old and VERY binky dependent. We were recently visiting a friend with a 2 month old, and Anna stole his binky and popped it right into her mouth. I was mortified! Luckily, the other Mommy was very understanding. I'm considering limiting the use to just in the car (they're not good car-riders) and in bed.

 

I voted after 2 years because Naomi and Luke kept theirs past 3 (and it was actually no trouble to stop using them, they decided to give them up on thier own). Having said that we did start limiting their use around one year, by 15 months they only got them for sleeping, so I guess that could be termed starting to take it away.

Eleanor was one of those children who give the paci up really early, by 8 months she wasn't interested at all (and she didn't switch to thumb sucking). Ethan still has his and seems to really like it (although only for sleeping and when he's very upset) so I don't see him giving it up anytime soon.

Neither Alyssa or Bryony had a paci, Bryony was another baby who just didn't have a strong need/desire to suck something and Alyssa sucks (not sucked, she is still doing it) her thumb. I'd much rather have a paci baby than a thumb sucking baby, as pp's have said it is so much easier to limit paci use (and eventually take away the paci) than it is to stop thumb sucking.

 

I took my Dd's away right after her second birthday but she wasn't as attached to it as one of my Ds is now. I don't know how it will go but I plan to do it after they have settled ino their big boy beds..so I guessing it will be a few months after they turn 2. I'm also struggling with the idea this time because one is a thumb sucker. I can't take that away from him so it seems unfar to take the soother away form the other :unknw:

 

This was my experience also. Mine tried out the paci a couple of times during the FY but it never took. There were times where I wish they would have taken the paci and even said to them, "You know other babies help their Mommies and Daddies out by doing this..." Kids were like :nea: I thought maybe the first part of the FY would have been easier if they took the paci :unsure:

 

We did before a year, but ours isn't really fair, because the boys weaned themselves when they got a really, really bad awful sickness after they got the flu, some sort of coxsackie virus (not foot and mouth, but Dr. thought was related) there mouths were swollen and painful and had sores in them and we had to dropperfull fluid in them for days, they were refusing bottles, pacifiers, everything because their mouths hurt.

they just never started using them again after they got sick and didn't seem to want to (they screamed when they tried them when they were sick), and we didn't really provide them the opportunity to start again

 

My oldest two had them for naps-car-stroller-night until they were 3. The the dum-dums (we call pacis this) pirates came in the night and swapped them for a small gift, usually during their birthday week.

 

oh gosh. i can't even vote. my two love their pacis so much that they wake up in the morning with one in the mouth and 3 in their hands (we sprinkled them in the cribs at the advice of our pedi when they were little and we haven't stopped doing it)

 

I havent voted either. Mine are 20 months old and very attached to their dummies and blankies. So much so that they will cry out if they cant find them in the night. I cant wait to get rid of them but now isnt the right time just yet. I think I´ll wait until afer they turn 2 and deal with it in the summer when Im not working. They only have them for nap, bedtime and in the car. They even went to the pedi without them for the first time yesterday but didnt ask for them - always a good sign!
