I need to feed my babies less?

Soooo... I went to WIC yesterday and the nutritionist there told me I need to cut back on the amount of times I nurse my twins. Also, she suggests I completely eliminate the 6-8oz of formula they get a day. Seriously lady? They weight 14lbs 14oz (yes they both weigh the same). I think thats about in the 40th percentile from what I can tell from the charts I have from the pediatrician. I was so furious. We are going to the pediatrician today anyway so I am going to mention it to him even though I KNOW it is not an issue. They have always been in the bottom 10% so I am very excited that they have finally put on weight!

    Just a little rant.... :)

Also, I have 3 $5.00 coupons for Similac Sensitive if anyone wants them. Just PM me your address and I will send them out to you :)

Wow, I can't believe she told you to nurse less. You give your babies what they want to eat and I don't think I'd take feeding advice from the WIC nurse that doesn't seem appropriate. This is an issue for your ped. It sounds like they are doing fine. Does she want them to go back to the 10th percentile? People sometimes. :nea:

Suggesting anyone under a year and not in the 99+++th percentile go on a 'diet' seems silly!! I would be very proud if my LO's had gone from the 10th to the 40th. Keep doing what your doing mama and see what the doctor has any better advice...

I could see attempting to nurse them exclusively and drop the formula. That might be something to discuss with a lactation consultant. I started out supplementing a bit and was able to nurse exclusively at around 3 months. I think it's crazy for that nurse to tell you to nurse less.

Wow, that's troubling, especially from someone who is supposed to SUPPORT breast feeding and help encourage people.

I am on WIC too, and have been really saddened at some of their less than knowledgeable staff. Don't get me wrong. I think WIC is a wonderful service. But in my experience sometimes they don't really practice what they preach, especially when it comes to breast feeding.

Have you considered reporting her comments to someone in charge? Not to get her in trouble or anything, but just to help ensure she does not pass on more incorrect information to other nursing Moms. Luckily you knew her advice was wrong. But some other mama who is trying to sort through all the confusing information out there might take her advice or at least be made to feel insecure about nursing her children as often as the children want to nurse. Almost all LCs, pedis who support breast feeding, etc are going to say feeding on demand is the only way to keep up supply and make sure your baby gets enough. Her telling moms that could theoretically lead a very well-meaning mother to feed her babies too little, or, at the very least, hurt the breast feeding relationship and reduce supply.

I think it would be something worth reporting just to help deter her from passing out bad information to other nursing Moms out there.

I got some conflicting advice from my WIC office's nutritionist too. (She said it was okay to leave my breastmilk out all day)That just sounds gross. She also called my DD overweight, and said my husband and I should stop drinking whole milk because it will make us fat. (I weigh 123 lbs he weighs 135). We have been drinking whole milk our entire lives and are in perfect health.

Anyway the funny part (and I mean my husband and I were ROTFL) was that she said all of this while sipping on a LARGE cola from McDonalds, and had the fast food bag right behind her. Not to mention she was not, in the least way, a "petite" person.

I LOVE McDonalds. I had a BIG MAC everyday that I was on bedrest. BUT if you're going to tell two perfectly healthy individuals and their children that they are eating unhealthy foods that will make them fat, don't you think you could at least put the Greasy fast food under your desk until they leave?

We just got back from the doctor (they both have colds) and I mentioned this "advice" to him. He was laughing out loud. Literally. He said, they went from being in the 1st and 2nd percentiles to the 38th and you need to feed them less? He said there way NO reason to limit the amount of times your nurse a baby unless they are off the charts. Even though I knew I was doing everything right, it was still nice to hear him say it. He also told me to try not to take any medical advice they give since they aren't under the supervision of a physician.

Anyway, I am excited to not have babies with chicken legs anymore! I like the little fat rolls :)

Congrats on your twins gaining weight! Ours started out below the chart. It was exciting to see them move up into the middle percentiles. My son ended up getting chunky (90%!). He grew into it when he started moving around a lot more and burning calories. It all works out!

I have no idea why she would care how many times a day you nurse your babies. It's not like it costing them any money. That is so odd :tease: Keep on keepin' on!!

My pedi has always given all of my boys' thighs a nice little squeeze at checkups and said, "Ah, I can always tell a breast-fed baby by these happy little rolls!"

And the "nutritionist"?! :fool: Her Cliffnotes must've been missing the chapter on breastfeeding. :nea: Sad thing is that less knowledgeable women than you depend blindly on her "expertise" and will take her advice as "word." Scary.

I'd have been estactic for Jessy to have made that big of a jump in percentage. I always enjoyed the talks too such as they don't need to eat hotdogs, peanut butter or grapes till they are 6 because of choking hazard. They are still just as likely to choke at 6 on those things as 2 or 3. :unknw:

wow that was crazy advice you got from the WIC lady... I can see cutting back the formula in an attempt to get your babies to demand all their nutrition from you via nursing (increasing your supply)... but to suggest cutting back nursing is crazy! i'm really glad that you were able to see your doctor and get his input on this.

congrats on the great weight gain of your babies! you are doing a great job!
