Yesterday was a very busy day with many friends coming and going from our house. After it all quieted down we were starting our bedtime routine when I ran to the bathroom. As soon as I sat down my husband began yelling for me in a panic. Our son had fallen off the couch and something was wrong with his shoulder. So I came as quickly as possible to check him out and I noticed something was wrong but not with his shoulder. He settled down quickly and we took his shirt off and realized this his arm had a bump on it. My husband took him to the ER and after a few hours of waiting he got an x-ray and they confirmed he had broken his arm. I cannot believe it. I feel horrible that this happened. I have tried my best to train my children not to climb on chairs and the couch but they do it anyways and now this. Now I am going to be a paranoid mess trying to keep them off furniture. I don't know how I'll keep his cast clean or how to keep him from hitting his sister with it. I also have to take him to a specialist next week to make sure it's healing right. No one in my husband's family or my family has ever broken a bone and now I have a 15 month old with a broken arm. I think I may be in a bit of shock about it since I didn't think I would ever have to deal with this. I feel that I am a failure as a mother since I couldn't even keep my child safe. The worst part is we are going on a vacation in a few weeks to take the babies to the Caribbean and now we can't even take him in the water. Sorry for this very bad post but I can't hardly put two thoughts together this morning.

Don't be too hard on yourself!!
No matter how diligent about safety you are, these are toddlers with their own minds just not the best awareness of danger!
I have 3 friends who have had their kids break an arm exactly like your son.

They do sell waterproof cast covers
    http://www.watertightcastcovers.com/OrderArmLegCovers.html
You may be able to find them in a medical supply store/pharmacy.

    Hoping for quick healing.

 Please don't be so hard on yourself, accidents do happen and no matter how much you watch them, they are still going to find a way to hurt themselves  I hope he makes a speedy recovery!

Oh man, I am so sorry this happened to you and your DS! You are NOT a failure; these little guys are just so curious and active, sometimes I feel like I should have a Border Collie to herd them away from danger. There are just not enough eyes in my head or arms to keep them from everything. And they constantly surprise me of what they're capable of.

I really hope your DS is feeling okay, and please don't be too hard on yourself.

this is so true! i have one daughter who has repeatedly managed to climb to the top of & then fall off of her change table - the only reason she hasn't broken anything is blind dumb luck. you are not in any way shape or form a failure as a mother. go easy on yourself. take a deep breath.

Kids climb and fall, that is part of being a kid. My son got a concussion right in front of DH and I by tripping over his own feet and falling into the storm door. His arm will heal, and he will be fine.

Also, tell the people who are casting him that you are planning to go on vacation. There are actually waterproof casts, and the trick with them is to hose them off with clean water after swimming.

My dd broke a bone in her arm a few months ago, so I know the guilt all to well, but it happens and they recover and two days later forget which arm it was. I hope he has a speedy recovery and please don't be to hard on yourself.

Oh, I'm so sorry. Accidents happen. Just a thought, my DD broke her ankle last Spring 3 days before a trip to Florida. They offered to put a waterproof cast on her and she could swim and take baths with no problem. You might want to ask about that. It was an extra $40 and worth every penny. It's a special material they put between the skin and the cast and maybe a different kind of casting material (not sure), but she also got to pick hot pink for her cast color. Good luck. Don't beat yourself up.

I agree with everyone else; try not to beat yourself up. Accidents happen. Think about how many of us broke or dislocated bones as kids, and it certainly wasn't because we had bad parents.

:grouphug: I can't tell you home many times my kids have fallen off of the couch, and fortunately nothing happened. He must have fallen at just the wrong angle.

It's just bad luck, definitely not your fault... I'm sure all our kids have fallen from the couch/chair/bed several times (mine definitely have).

You are definately not a failure has a mother. Dont beat yourself up! things like this happen... kids will always be adventous and curious no matter how hard we try. As PP's had said you can get waterproof covers for the cast. Ive been in casts on both my legs up too my knees for my Cerebral Palsy treatments, and they are great. I use them every time i need another cast treatment. lots of 's Mama. and heres to a speedy recovery.

I'm definately on board with everyone else, definately don't blame yourself! One of my boys at almost 22 months still falls off the couch accidentally, seems he should have a better sense around him but not yet!

I wanted to add that my other son had a cast up to his shoulder after having surgery on his hand. I was really worred (I knew it was coming) about how he would do with it and how many bruises his brother would have from it. However, it was like he alwasy had it. We had to travel out of state for his surgery and when we got back (we left his brother with my parents) his brother wanted "more" to get a cast for himself too but from then on it was just like part of his body and it went fine.

I very rarely have the chance to come on and read or reply to post. My boys will be two in May. I just wanted to let you know my son did the exact same thing the week before Christmas. I was so devastated. I felt horrible. I didn't learn alot from my little trooper through this experience. He never cried, never slowed down, and laughed at the doctors when they removed the cast. They prepared us for screaming and crying once the saw came on but our little man just laughed and smiled. Yes, I am a nervous wreck now everytime they attempt to climb something, run around the house, or think they can "ride" everything! Don't beat yourself up, accidents happen and all we can do as Mommas is our best.

I just wanted to say thank you to everyone for the kind words and suggestions re: waterproof casts. Here is a little update on my little boy. I think I was more upset than he was about his broken arm. He woke up the next day and started to climb around like nothing had happened. I don't even know if he noticed he had a cast on until he tried to eat with it and couldn't get his arm to work. Needless to say, it's been sad to watch him struggle and stumble around with the heavy cast on but I am determined not to be upset about it if he isn't upset about it. Tomorrow we head to the specialist and I am just hoping for good news.
