Adjusted Age?

My twins were born at 35 weeks. They are now 7 weeks and super, super fussy. They started being like this right around 5.5 weeks. If their adjusted age is really only 2 weeks, why would they go through the 'fussy 6-8 weeks' at their actual 6-8 weeks out of the womb?

Just curious if people really found the adjusted age thing to be real, ie, were they really on their adjusted age or age out of the womb? Sorry if that's confusing. I'm just freaking out!!! My first child slept through the night at 4 months, so would this mean (hypothetically) that this won't happen till 5 months?

    Thanks!

My twins were born at 34 weeks, my DS started STTN at 6 weeks (actual age) and my DD around the 3 month mark (actual age). So far they have been developing at their actual age with no problems. The only thing I used their adjusted age for was starting solids....they didn't start until they were about 7.5 months (actual age) because they just didn't seem interested any earlier. Like they so though every baby is different, even with twins they do and like different things at different times. GL!

My oldest and the twins were all born at 36 wks. I never used adjusted age for anything, because for most milestones there is a very wide range of "normal". The biggest time adjusted age comes into play is if they are beyond what the "normal" age range is. So if they are late on anything (smiling, cooing, sitting...etc) you can rest easy that technically they have a 4-5 week leeway.

I would say don't start counting on anything, just take it as it comes. If you start worrying about the "what if's" (what if they don't sleep through the night, what if they won't eat solids, what if they don't sit/crawl/walk....etc) you will slowly drive yourself insane.

Most babies start to wake up around 6-8 wks, and it sounds like what yours are doing. I would just worry more about dealing with the problem, rather than trying to figure out what problems may occur in the future and how to deal with them :) No two babies are the same, just because your first sttn at 4 months doesn't gaurantee our second/third (fourth...fifth...) will sttn at the same time :)

My oldest ds sttn at about 4-5 wks, my oldest dd was around 8 wks, and the twins were around 12 wks.

A lot of babies born at 35 weeks won't need any adjustment at all & some will. They will probably do many things on schedule but if they are a bit behind in doing something, you will always know that you can give them that extra few weeks. It's hard to say when they will STTN since all babies are different. Regardless of when they were born, they may not sleep through at the same time that your first child did. Maybe you will get luck & it will be sooner than you think!

My boys were born at 33 week and sadly they did the 6-9 week fussiness at both the actual AND adjusted age! It was really rough, but it was just a phase. You'll make it through! :youcandoit:

mine were 35 weekers exactly. they went through a colic phase at 2 months but i don't think that their habbits, feedings/sleeping/etc go by their "adjusted age" i think the "adjusted age" is just for developmental milestones and growth.

my boys started STTN at 2 1/2 months so that would be 1 1/2 months adjusted...so hang in their sweety..."adjusted age" doesn't always mean anything. it's just a way for our babies to be given some slack when it comes to development because they didn't get the same amount of time to fully develop in the womb as full term babies.

It is not an exact science and it is just a guide line. Just like all developmental stages. There are no hard and fast rules of development.

Don't worry about their age and just do what you have to to get through whatever they are going through. You can do it!

Yep, I agree with Alison, its not always exact. But it can happen. Most sleep milestones and those guided by the brain maturity will be reached at adjusted age.

I never used the adjusted age because technically 37 weeks is term. DD has done everything right on time. DS, however, was smaller and acted more immature. He had a lot of trouble latching for about 2 weeks, slept longer stretches later than his sister, STTN later, and fell into a nap schedule later. In retrospect it seems as though he was behind his sister about 3 weeks with sleep and feeding issues, but they have always had the rest of their milestones at about the same time and he has even done some things first. According to HSHHC, sleep patterns date from the due date and not the birth date, so for sleep training, etc you may want to adjust. In the end, it is what works for you.

My kids definately "woke-up" around their due date. Good luck!

I've found the adjusted age to be much more accurate in terms of milestones, growth and expected fussy periods. As for STTN, mine still don't.
