Anyone know how and when (how soon) the doctor can tell is the babies are identical of fraternal? I know it's obvious if they are different sex, but just wondering in the other case....

Some times there are clear clues during u/s that point to id twins. mo/mo are always id. mo/di it depends because placentas can fuse. Di/di can still be id if the egg split really early. Mine were deemed id in utero because of placement, thinness of membrane between the (mo/di) and sex.

Do you have an early ultrasound pic? Were they in one black hole or did they each have their own black hole?

(I don't know if you're pregnant now or had them??)

    Same blood type?

Do you have pictures of them for us? Side by side is best.

Because mine were di/di, (didn't share a placenta or sack... Anything, really) we had to wait until after they were born and order a DNA test. I was confident that they were ID, but I was the only one. I was right!!!

Ask the OB after you've had an U/S and she hopefully will be able to look at the report and tell you for sure. It was always inconclusive for us and to this day I don't know 100% for sure. If you don't find out, usually the OB can look at the pathology report on the placenta and find out...but again, it didn't work for us.

In the first ultrasound from 7 weeks, there are what looks like two seperate sacs right next to each other.

If they are di-di & the same sex, there is really no way to know for sure without DNA testing (unless when they are born they have completely different blood type, hair color, eye color, or something like that). It could go either way but hard to say for sure until they are born.
