Constipating foods?

    Hi there,
I've posted before about my poor DS. He keeps having issues with constipation. I know the obvious - bananas, rice and apples are constipating... but what others have you found to be constipating in your LO's?

Alvocado? Sweet potatoes? Squash? Any of those, or others? I read somewhere that carrots can be "binding"? I'm just wondering what it is that is causing this problem. When it first started happening I could clearly say it was the bananas, but now I don't give those to him, and he's still having problems...

    Thanks!

I found "happy bellies" probiotic cereal. I mix it with all of my kids fruit/veggies and it seems to have helped their constipation issue. It took a few days but now their bowel movements are more normal than the rock hard things they were doing.

I agree that probiotics can work wonders. Prunes are good for constipation, also I have hear pears are good.

Any foods that are high in fat, but low in fiber such as cheese, meats, and processed foods in which the fiber has been removed.

Stick with these things to help aid constipation:

    Apples
    Peaches
    Raspberries
    Tangerines
    Acorn squash, raw
    Broccoli, raw
    Brussels sprouts, raw
    Cabbage, raw
    Carrots, raw
    Cauliflower, raw
    Spinach, cooked
    Zucchini, raw
    Black-eyed peas, cooked
    Kidney beans, cooked
    Lima beans, cooked
    Whole-grain cereal

My DD suffered a lot from constipation too. I found things got a lot better when I gave her more oranges and kiwis in her fruit puree. She still has days when she is has problems but fruit helps plus drinking a lot of water! I hope things improve asap, I know how horrible it is to see your child in pain.

All of these foods! I feel like I'm so behind on giving them things. It's not because I don't want to.... I guess I'm in a food rut and don't know what to give them and how!

We are still on almost all purees out of a jar or made by me including, peas, green beans, alvocado, sweet potatoes, carrots, butternut squash, bananas, pears, apples, apricots, blueberries, rice and oatmeal cereal. Finger food wise - I give bits of banana, ripe pears and alvocado, sweet potato, etc... and some puffs.

I don't know where to go from here. I tried some pieces of wheat toast with apricot mash spread on it tonight, and one DS gagged and projectile vomitted :bad:... so that wasn't a success...

I read that finger food ideas thread, but a lot of the things I haven't introduced, and others I don't think they are ready for the texture.

Try pureed prunes, apples, pears...these things always made my girls have real good BMs. Bananas are the worst my LOs...I think I'm going to have to stop all together with those. you're doing great and keep offering them foods that they don't like right away. you will be amazed that one day they will gobble them right up after refusing them just a few days prior.

also, try giving them some cauliflower and broccoli sprinkle it with some spices because most babies won't eat veggies plain. they are high in fiber and will help them poo. ;)

oh yea, thought of 2 more, prunes and peaches they've had those too!

Any thoughts on what foods are good to introduce to help them get used to textures without choking or gagging on them?

Try rolling the "slimey" foods in crushed up graham crackers. This will help them with picking them up and with chewing. You are going to have to keep offering them weird textured foods for them to get use to it. My girls hated peaches and bananas at first because of the texture, but now they will gladly eat them.

They most likely will gag with a lot of foods at first, but gagging is okay and they will learn fast how to properly eat. Just make sure they aren't stuffing too many pieces in their mouths at once and make sure the pieces aren't too big.

I also use happy bellies rice cereal and oatmeal and that seems to aid in their constipation. Also, sweet potatoes seem to make one of my girls constipated. She is constipated a lot so I give her 4-8 ounces of water everyday to make sure she stays super hydrated. If it gets too bad, I give 1/2 prune juice 1/2 water mixture and give a small piece of a glycerin suppository (like 1/4 of an infant/child suppository).
