Smallest surviving baby born in Mobile, AL

Didn't know if anyone else out there heard this story, but here in my hometown and at the hospital that I delivered my twins at, the smallest surviving baby was born back in August of this year. She is part of triplets and weighed in at a whopping 9.1 ounces! That's right, I said ounces. She was the size of a coke can when she was born. I have friends that are NICU nurses at the hospital and they said that the little girl is doing great and may not end up having any major problems in the future. Talk about a miracle! Wow, that's amazing. What a little fighter. I hope she continues to grow stronger and all of them will be healthy.

Wow and i just read the article. the mother was 16 years old and this little girl is the Fraternal triplet where the other 2 girls are identical. Truly amazing..

 

I thought there was an 8oz little baby girl who left the hospital and was on the news as the worlds smallest surviving baby? We had a link to it on here. Not that 9oz isn't small...sooo tiny but I just thought there was one smaller?

I gotta check out the other. I can't even imagine how tiny she must have been!! I thought this other one was so tiny!!

 

Wow, that's crazy. How can you witness something like that and not believe in God? I hope that these teenage parents realize the HUGE responsibility they are getting into. So glad that all the babies are doing well, though.

Totally True. If you dont believe in God after witnessing something like that, theres got to be something wrong and I agree, such a HUGE responsibility especially being so young..

 

Oh my goodness!!! what a miracle! and for her sisters to already be home is too! I hope they all continue to do well!!! Thank goodness both grandmothers look like they are very loving people!! Bless the mother's heart - at just 16 she has had to experience so much.

 

How amazing, definitely a miracle baby! I hope they all continue to do well and that the mom and dad have a lot of help.

wow...sounds like they were a big surprise to that teenage mom! She has her hands full, hopefully her mom is very supportive!

 

After a trip to my local grocery store today, I have an update on these triplets. I struck up a conversation with the cashier at the store this evening and she saw me buying things like diapers and toddler toys and she asked how old my baby was. I told her I had twin boys, and somehow we got onto the subject of them being premature. She said her friend had premature triplets and that one of them was the smallest surviving baby ever born. I knew right away who she was talking about! I have not heard any updates since their first birthday last year, but the cashier told me that the family was having their second birthday party this weekend. The girls all turned 2 today! She said the smallest one was finally learning how to crawl, and the other two were doing great and starting to catch up in development very well. Just had to share the good news!

I am thrilled for this happy outcome for this family. I am so very happy they had the good fortune to have these babies in a time when science could save them. I still don't believe in God, and there is nothing wrong with me.

 

Ditto. I believe in science. Apparently, God's been around a long time, but until science found a way to save them, these tiny babies died.

 

I do believe in God. But, science and medical advancements are what saved this baby. With this logic, if God allowed this baby to live at 9oz, why does he allow others to die?

It is better explained by science and medicine, in my opinion. And maybe even a little bit of luck.

 

Without God giving man the brain and ability to learn and grow, science and medicine never would have advanced to this point of saving 9oz babies. God is not ani science or medicine. If you know the Bible you know that Luke, one of the 12 Disciples was a doctor. I can not answer why some babies live and some die, I don't know why God took one of my babies before I got to meet them, but I do know that my belief in God tells me that He is Sovereign and has a plan and a reason for everything and I may not know the answers this side of heaven. Just my opinion and belief.

 

And you are absolutely entitled to your belief. I do not believe in God, but that does not mean there is anything wrong with me. Your Bible will tell you that each man is given a measure of faith and they are not all the same size. Mine is size zero. So your Bible provides you a way to reconcile my atheism, although I do not believe your God made me an atheist, because if I believed that I wouldn't be an atheist.

 

You are right, there is nothing wrong with you. God created man with free will to choose to believe or not, you are simply exercising your God given free will to not believe.

 

There's no effort or exercise. I have never been capable of belief, even as a child. All I exercised in this thread was to point out that the statement that "if you can look at this and not believe in God there is something wrong" is quite insulting to the many, many people on this planet who do not believe in the Christian God--or in any god. It's one of those casual things people say all the time without really considering the possible effects of their words. Kind of like your statement telling me that I'm using my God-given right. No I'm not, but if it helps you to think of it that way... :unknw:

 

OK, I had to add my two cents in here since I was the one to start this thread and give a little update on these babies...if the update I provided about how well all of these little babies are doing strengthens your faith in God or whatever higher deity you believe, hallelujah! That is awesome. If the update strengthens your faith in mankind and it's ability for recovery and surmounting unbelievable challenges without stirring any seemingly spiritual emotions, that is awesome for you as well. Just for the record, I am a spiritual person who believes very strongly in knowing that I have a soul and that there is a higher power than myself who helps me care for that soul. I believe in Christ and the resurrection and all of that stuff (I was about to sound like a recitation at church there for a minute ) My faith is strong enough to respect others belief systems. I love people as I think God would have me love and respect them. If someone is open to hearing about my faith and beliefs, I will pour my heart out to them any day of the week. But if someone is steadfast in their beliefs, that may differ greatly from mine (barring beliefs that involve anything harmful or illegal to others or themselves), then so be it. They still have my full respect as another human being. My time is better spent nurturing my own faith and sharing that faith with those who want to hear about it.

I meant this update as a positive ray of light to all, no matter what you believe.

 

I agree with you, however, what I don't understand is why everyone is so easily offended? If one does not believe in God, they take offense to someone asserting their belief (I personally believe as a Christ follower I am to share the Gospel with everyone) If someone believes in God they take offense to someone saying they don't believe in God. I will share my beliefs without shame and with love and with respect of others, but I will not apologize for my beliefs or for sharing them and I will not be offended of others beliefs no matter how different from mine. That story is a miracle no matter what you believe and no matter how you look at it and I really enjoyed reading about it!

 

I guess I'm a Christian who can't reconcile "God's Plan" with free will. Either he has a plan - or we have free will. I guess I put the idea that God has a plan along the same lines as "God never gives you more than you can handle". These (to me) are ideas created by people to make themselves or others feel "comforted".

If God never gives us more than we can handle, why do people kill themselves, kill their children, abuse their spouses or children, etc.?

If God has a plan, why pray over a dying a child or a premature infant? His plan would already be established, He's not going to save a child based on your prayers. What about the family that prays and prays over their child with cancer and he/she dies. That is explained with God has a plan. If another child grows up into an angry teenager and shoots his classmates, that is explained as free will. There are just so many discrepancies to these phrases, and as a Christian myself, they annoy me to no end.

It is amazing that medical doctors are able to save 9oz babies, absolutely. It is a miracle! But I sincerely doubt God is looking over and selecting which premature infants live or die.

And I don't think people are EASILY offended. I think it was the comments that said things like "How can you witness something like that and not believe in God?" and "If something like that doesn't make you believe in God, there has got to be something wrong" were the key quotes that offended people. How would you (others who believe in God) feel if someone heard a news story of extreme violence and tragedy and said, "If that doesn't make you realize there is NO god, there's got to be something wrong." or "How can you witness such violence and still believe in god"? Both of those imply that if you believe in God, you're foolish. Just as the previous comments in this thread imply that if you don't believe in God, you are foolish.

 

I don't think one has to be "easily offended" to be offended by the following:

I'm not offended by people saying that witnessing the survival of tiny preemies strengthens their faith in God. Religion is so deeply personal. I personally think it's illogical to make the leap, "X highly improbable good thing happened, therefore an invisible, omniscient, omnipotent being exists (and also happens to be the one that my particular church worships)," for the reasons that others have pointed out, especially Jori. But it doesn't offend me, I just happen to disagree. Live and let live.

I do find it offensive to be told there's something wrong with me for not buying into that particular line of reasoning, just as I'd be offended at anyone of any faith being told there's something wrong with them because of their beliefs.

 

I don't know how to do the quote within my reply so I will do my best here...

I believe God does have a plan for us, it says in the Bible "for I know the plans I have for you says the Lord" It also tells us to pray with out ceasing. It also tells us to go make disciples and heal the sick and cast out demons ( of course only if you are a Christ follower would you believe this) It also makes it clear we have a choice to believe or not. Why do so many things happen that seem so contrary to what God would want? It is because there is another force at play, and that is Satan who is out to steal, kill and destroy. He and his many demons work hard on this earth to "talk" people into doing wrong, like killing themselves, or others beating their wives or any number of other horrible things.

As far as being given more than you can handle being man made idea, it is in the Bible and says this "The temptations in your life are no different from what others experience. And God is faithful. He will not allow the temptation to be more than you can stand. When you are tempted, he will show you a way out so that you can endure. He will show you a way that you can endure, but for some they do not believe and therefore do not see the way out or they listen to the lies of the enemy and not to God. I do not have all the answers nor do I pretend to but I do believe that God is Sovereign and there will be a lot that is not completely understood this side of heaven. I do believe in the power of prayer and there is scripture to back that as well. I will not go into all the scripture or make this a sermon. I have friends who do not share my same beliefs and we have talked about it at length and neither of us are offended at each other. I think it is best to live an un-offendable life. Otherwise every little thing will offend you.

As far as being offended if someone were to tell me I was foolish for believing in God, no I would not be. Everyone has an opinion and are free to share it. I would not tell someone they are foolish or something is wrong with them because they don't believe in God. I don't think that is showing love to them. But I am secure in my faith and if someone thinks I am foolish for my belief, ok. I wont retaliate with hatred or mean hearted words but again I wont apologize for my beliefs either.

Like I said before, this baby surviving is a miracle or whatever you want to call it. Praise men for it or praise God for it. I choose to call it a miracle and praise God for it. I choose to stand firm in my beliefs and let others attack me and call me foolish, but I wont be offended or take aim back with retaliation.

 

Wow, all of this discussion back and forth is really making me wish I had kept the update on these babies to myself. What I wished would be a quick story of inspiration is quickly deteriorating into a topic that will most likely be locked by the powers that be. Lesson learned. I think I'll just stick to posting on topics like sippy cups and poop :hush:

 

Aw, nothing wrong with a respectful discussion of ideas! :friends: We wouldn't be talking about it if it wasn't interesting, right? There's more to life than sippy cups and poop (THANK GOODNESS! :lol: ). And I think we're all thrilled that the triplets are doing well.

I know this isn't a thread about religion and I am sorry to the OP that she feels that it is taking away from the topic. It is truly a miracle and an amazing thing that those tiny triplets are doing so well! But, as a Christian myself, I have a hard time letting stuff like this go.
