I called my doctor about the soy formula discussion

After reading all the info about soy formula, I got all nervous and switched my LO's over to a milk-based formula. One of them wasn't tolerating it well; he had mucousy stool, hasn't been sleeping, etc. I called the pedi about it and said that I read several pages of info saying how it wasn't the 'safest' of choices. He told me it was very safe and that it was a vegetable protein and nothing to be worried about. He assured me that if the kids are doing well, to leave them on it; it's a great choice.

Now...I trust my pedi wholeheartedly but I also feel that I need to be my kids doctor in a sense and that I need to be their biggest advocate.

What does everyone think? Is there anyone else that gives their kids soy?

All of my kids were on soy. Hannah was on Nutramigen for awhile, but after that, soy. JMO, but I think you can find something negative about just about anything out there without looking very hard at all.

If my babies were not tolerating milk I would not hesitate to put them on soy. I have way more to worry about than that.

my boys have also been on soy but since we didn't see any improvements we put them back on milk based.

i was given soy as an infant because i was allergic to milk and that was almost 30 years ago and i'm fine.

My 12 year old son drank pretty much all soy (other than breastmilk) for about a year. He's fine as far as I know, he shows absolutely no signs of any kind of problem.

My boys are on soy too. I called my ped about it and he has no worries about it. However, I did switch one of my twins to Alimentum, he has a milk protein allergy, and is doing so much better that I am going to keep him on it. I tried milk based on his brother and that didn't go so well. So, he is back on soy and I may put him on Alimentum too or keep him on soy. They both get BM too in addition to formula.

I trust my ped too, but the soy still bothers me.

one twin did great on the milk based.
should i continue to give him the milk based and the other LO the soy?

Both of my boys have been on soy with no problems whatsoever. We started them on Similac Advance and withing a month they were in so much pain, they'd scream after the first few sucks of the bottle. We then switched to Similac Sensitive it worked, for about 2 weeks and it all started over again. We then tried soy and have been pain free ever since. I agree with PP that you can find something negative with just about anything if you're looking.

if one twin is doing great on regular old milk based than i wouldn't change it, why fix something if it ain't broke, you know?

if the other one doesn't tolerate the milk you can try the soy out on him and see if that helps or you could go with similac sensitive which is milk based but lactose free or alimentum or nutrimagen (both being hypoallergenic)

just be sure not to mix up the bottles... :)

when they first came home from the hospital, they were both on Isomil soy.
i switched over to nestle good start and baby a is not tolerating it well. (or atleast i don't think so; he's the one with the mucous in his stool, not napping well, etc.) twin b is tolerating the new milk-based formula fine. my question was, should i keep twin b on the milk or put him back on the soy. my insurance company covers the soy. we didn't care about the money bc we were concerned about their health and wanted to do what was best for them.

If B is tolerating the milk-based, I would leave him/her on it.

Are they on soy formula because they are Lactose-Intolerant or do they have a Milk Allergy that has been tested at the doctor's office?

they were never tested for any allergy. the pedi switched the formula at birth bc of spitting up. it took one of my LO's 48 hours to pass his first poop, too

    ETA: his meconium plug.
