    Hi All,
I'm joining you all back over here in the first year forum since we just had our singleton on 11/10/09.
But, it's been awhile since the twins were on forumla so, I need some help..please refresh my memory!
I switched formula since we brought the baby home he was on similac in the hospital now we have him on good start. For the past couple of days he's been very gassy and it seems to be hurting him when he goes poop. So is it ok to give him some infant gas drops or is he too young? Today he's a week & 4 days old.

    Thanks For Any Help :)

I'm not sure. I remember giving it to my girls when they were very tiny but I would hate to say give it to him if it's against pedi advice. I think it's okay but I'd call your pedi before just to be on the safe side.

Gas drops are totally fine to use. I found they worked best being put directly into the bottle so the drops break up the bubbles before the baby has a chance to swallow them. Simethicone is not absorbed systemically, it just goes right through the GI tract, so it's safe to give many times a day (I read somewhere 12 times a day!).

I used gas drops on the girls when they were a week old and everything was fine. They really did help out along with the dr. brown's bottles.

yes...we use Mylicon for both at EVERY feeding (3ml). Merrick is the only one home now, but when he gets fussy for his feeding, I just squirt it into his mouth(he loves the taste), then I shoot in his 3.1ml of sodium while he still has the taste of Mylicon in there. That way, when he gets his bottle, there is only some nasty tasting stuff in it twice a day when I have to mix his vit, sodium and caffine with bout 20ml(to ensure he takes it all)

My kids were getting gas drop WELL before they were term gestation age.

We started using Mylicon at every feeding when the twins were a couple of days old. Both of them were very gassy when they came home from the hospital. Eventually we switched to Similac Sensitive formula and continued using the gas drops. Good luck!

You should definitely try out the gas drops, they won't hurt your babies even at this young age. I am undecided as to how helpful simethicone drops have been for us, but I'm trying them again now. Originally we started putting the drops in with their bottles and that had ZERO effect on their gas and tummy pains. So I stopped using them for a while, but then started using them again just to mix formula, because they do work GREAT at reducing the bubbles in formula. We never shake formula, but rather makes batches with a hand mixer, and we always let it sit in the fridge for a while before they get it in a bottle. So the air bubbles would probably go down eventually on their own, but I still like zapping them before just to make sure they are all gone by the time the boys take the formula. The reason we started out putting the drops in their bottles was because both boys made horrible faces when giving it to them straight from the dropper. I figured they hated the taste. But recently I tried giving them straight simethicone again, and they didn't mind it at all! So for the past two nights we've given them the gas drops right before their last nighttime bottle, and we stop halfway through the bottle to make sure we at least get one really good burp (otherwise its really hard to get ANY burps out of a sleeping baby!). I don't know how well this strategy is working so far since its only be 2 nights, but so far so good anyway.

And btw, go with a generic brand because the Mylicon name brand is crazy expensive! Target's simethicone drops are only $3.74, and Mylicon ranges in price from $8-$10 depending on where you buy it. And that is one tiny bottle to charge so darn much!

Wow...didn't even know mylicon cost that much...guess I never bothered to check the reciept. I'v ekind of given up on looking at prices (too depressing...I just pay it), espicially with the expensive formula he is on.

I might have to check out the target brand you mentioned, as long as it doesn't taste bad. They LOVE that Mylicon stuff. I make a bunch of doses up and tasted a lil bit when I was taking to top off of one of his doses and it's some good tasting stuff.

I believe Mylicon is $7.99 at our Target, and it is $9.99 at Krogers and CVS! At least where we live. I've tasted Target's Up & Up generic brand and it seems to taste ok. It may not be quite as sweet as Mylicon, but still pretty good. Since the Target generic gas drops are so much cheaper we bought 4 boxes of them today, LOL. I don't like to have to run all over the house to find stuff (especially when holding a fussy baby), so I keep a bottle beside the nusery rocker, the bedroom rocker, on the coffee table, and the kitchen counter for mixing formula. Hmmm, perhaps I'm a little lazy! LOL

Also, another thing we use for gas are Cocyntal vials (sold on Amazon). I swear by those things! Basically, if the boys already have bad gas and tummy discomfort, I give them Cocyntal and that usually helps a lot. I use the gas drops just before their bottles to hopefully prevent gas from developing in the first place.

I use the Target brand and it works just as well ads the Mylicon. I also use the Target brand of Infant's Tylenol and Motrin too.

    Thanks :)
I will give them a try. Poor thing last night while I was feeding him he was straining and sooo gassy I felt sad for him.
So is it easier to put it in his bottle then or give it to him before he eats the bottle?
I really appericate your help. :thanks:

it's easier to put in bottles, but I think it may be more effective if given directly by the dropper before a bottle. They may grimace the first time, or not, but if so I would try a few times before giving up. Wish I wouldn't have give up so early on.

Not that I go around "taste-testing" my kids meds, but do you know if the generic brand taste good like the mylicon brand, or did you have any trouble giving them the generic brand by mouth before the bottle.

That mylicon stuff is sweet and he loves it. I would pay the extra for it just for that reason.

Just curious...don't feel the need to go taste the generic brand for me. Ha...I mean...uh...unless you want to???

I've tasted the target brand and it tastes ok. Not bitter or anything. The mylicon might be a bit sweeter, but not enough to justify the price for me.

I had to giggle at this. My DH does taste test the kid's meds! We had to give my DD Infant's Poly Vi Sol with iron and he spit it out and I said, "I'm with her! This stuff is awful!" As for generic vs. Mylicon taste...my kids take both fine, either they don't notice the difference (have Mommy's taste buds) or they tolerate it.

Cool...I went and got the Wal-Mart Equate brand(compare to Mylicon), so now I guess I am good to go.

Yeah...and I actually looked at the prices this time...wow!
