Reflux Update

I had taken the boys into the RSV clinic today to get their 3rd shot and to also see the developmental pediatrician. While the developmental pediatrician was checking them out they began arching their backs and spitting up. She asked what medicine they were on for their reflux and I told her Zantac. She rolled her eyes and said "that stuff never works!" She then told me I should try getting it switched. I explained to her that I tried yesterday and the doctor said there was nothing else. So she walked me over to the desk & got me a walk in with another pediatrician. He prescribed them .3ml (liquid form) once daily of Prevacid. Now I'm hoping this works!

How long did it take for anyone to notice a change after they begun Prevacid?

 

I don't have reflux experience, but I know many people on here have not had luck with Zantac. I hope the Prevacid works for them! :hug:

 

I'm glad you were able to get different meds! I don't have any experience there, but hope you see a change quickly.

 

:woo: for a doctor that listens! If this is the compounded form of Prevacid, I think you really have to watch the effectiveness of it as you get towards the 2(someone correct me if I'm wrong on that) week mark. So, if it works better in the beginning, and then not so much, you know it's losing it's effectiveness, and I would ask for Prevacid Solutabs. Even at their age, they should have no problem taking them.

As for how soon you should be able to tell, it varies. If your babies have any damage to their esophagus due to the reflux, it might take a little longer for that to heal and you to really notice that they are feeling better. Many see results very quickly though.

When we got on the Prevacid, I had new babies almost within 24 hours. I was told it could take up to 7 days for it to really kick in, but for us it started almost immediately and only got better from there. I am so glad for you. :clapping:

 

That's great! Zantac did not work for us. Prevacid did the trick! They say it can take up to 2 weeks, but ours started working w/in 1 week for sure! We used teh solutabs from the beginning though, so not sure if that makes any difference. Hope it starts working soon!!!

What she said! Especially the part about the compound losing effectiveness! If necessary ask for the solutabs and we can give you all kinds of hints on how to give them to them!

I saw a difference within a couple of days when my dd started the prevacid! :hug:

 

We just got switched to Prevacid from Zantac also and I was advised to continue giving Zantac and Prevacid for the next 5 days to transition and apparently, it helps Prevacid to "kick in" sooner.

Girls, I was told that there is no liquid form of Prevacid and was given pills that need to be diluted in water and then given by syringe. Any advice on the easiest method of diluting the pills?

Yep I was given the compound (liquid) form, so I guess I will have to make sure to watch it in about 2 weeks.

It was an absolute NIGHTMARE getting the prescription filled. We went to the doctor then right over to the pharmacy, they said there was no prescription. They sent me back to the doctor, he said that he put it in again for both of the boys. So I went back and they said it was there, but it'd take a few hours to make the compound. BUT then they tell me there's only a prescription for one of the boys.

So I ended up leaving w/ only one month prescription of it and will split it between the boys for now. They have their 4 month well baby appointment with their primary care doctor (also one of their NICU doctors, thank goodness) in 2 weeks so I'm gonna have her correct it and get a prescription for both!

As for the solutabs, do they have to be kept refrigerated like the compound? Just curious, I might ask for the solutabs cause these boys tend to drool out the liquid some.

 

Hmm, this pediatrician told me specifically not to mix the Zantac and Prevacid. I know I used to take Zantac for myself and during the pregnancy had to be switched to Nexium cause Zantac no longer works for me either and I was told not to mix the two?
